Paper is one of the most familiar materials in our everyday lives. We write on it, wrap gifts with it, recycle it without much thought. Yet in the hands of artist Mydollmallu, a simple sheet of paper transforms into something entirely unexpected: elaborate wearable sculptures, dreamlike costumes, and surreal self-portraits that blur the boundaries between fashion, sculpture, and photography. Each piece begins as an ordinary material before unfolding into an imaginative world where paper appears almost weightless, fluid, and alive.

What makes these creations particularly remarkable is that they aren't elaborate studio productions involving large crews or expensive equipment. Instead, they're the result of an intensely personal creative process in which the artist designs the sculptures, wears them, photographs herself, and edits the final images independently. The finished works feel theatrical and meticulously planned, yet many originate from nothing more than a fleeting question: "What if...?"

For Mydollmallu, photography is not the final goal but simply the language through which the artwork reaches its audience. Although many viewers first encounter her pieces as photographs, she doesn't consider herself a photographer. Instead, paper remains the true medium of expression, while the camera serves only as "the eyes" that allow her ideas to be shared with the world. Most surprisingly, many of these carefully crafted images are photographed using nothing more than a smartphone, a tripod, and a remote shutter, giving her the freedom to experiment whenever inspiration strikes. Some concepts move from a passing thought to a finished artwork in a single day. Her piece "Boat on the Waves", for example, existed only as a brief idea before becoming a completed photograph by that same evening.

Improvisation plays an equally important role throughout the creative process. Rather than forcing paper into a predetermined design, the artist treats the material as a collaborator. It bends, tears, folds, and occasionally behaves in unexpected ways, and instead of correcting those imperfections, she embraces them. To her, every crease tells a story, much like the lines on a person's face. That philosophy also extends to her scanned self-portrait series, where she intentionally highlights every wrinkle and texture instead of hiding them, allowing the material's own character to become part of the final artwork.

Describing herself as an "artisan artist," Mydollmallu believes ideas become meaningful only after passing through her own hands. She enjoys every stage of creation, from the first spontaneous impulse to folding the paper, building the sculpture, stepping in front of the camera, and capturing the finished image herself. Over time, paper has become far more than a material, it has become her way of communicating with the world. "Paper has become my freedom," she said in the interview with Bored Panda. "My wings." Looking through these surreal creations, it's easy to understand exactly what she means.
