Social media gave all of us a platform. And since everyone has an opinion on everything, we have to be more careful when consuming content—not all of it is valid.

Probably nothing proves this point better than the subreddit 'Facebook Science.' Gathering the dumbest statements they can find on the internet, its 50K members constantly show that there are no limits to human ignorance

"[This online community is] about the science-denying pseudo-intellectuals who think they know better than centuries of scientific understanding and aren't afraid to leave comments arguing even the most simple of concepts," the subreddit's moderators write on its 'About' page.

Theories? Evidence? Experiments? Reputable scientific methods aren't welcome here. This is the epitome of "My friend in the bar says..."

For more painfully ridiculous false statements, check out Bored Panda's first publication on the subreddit.

Rather, Covid exposed him as a fraud, his research center was generously funded and pumped out a ridiculous number of scientific papers. Medical authorities already suspected him of forging data. He was exposed during covid since no one could replicate any of his results he was so adamantly defending publicly. He's definitely an arrogant egomaniac, and he used his charisma and reputation to bully research students into producing the data he wanted.

This is mostly unrelated but kinda related because shingles is a form of herpes and so is chicken pox. So if you ever had chicken pox (you probably did) it never truly goes away. So technically everyone has herpes.

Efforts to flood the world’s media with dishonest information or malicious content go to the very top.

Donald Trump derided any critical news coverage as “fake news” and his unwillingness to concede the 2020 presidential election eventually led to the January 6, 2021 riot at the US Capitol.

For years, radio host Alex Jones denounced the parents of children slaughtered in the Sandy Hook school shooting in Newton, Connecticut as "crisis actors." On August 5, 2022 he was ordered by a jury to pay more than US$49 million in damages to two families for defamation.

There are many factors why a municipal chooses the trees they planted. Hardiness (branches do not brake easily to the slightest breeze), pest resistancy, ease of maintenance, roots that do not go sideways and damage roads etc.

I think the point is there are plenty of fruits and other food sources being grown constantly on this planet. So there is absolutely no reason for anyone of us to go without eating. Resources being mass produced and plenty to go around yet people are struggling or worse literally starving to death while food is growing in whatever season it grows in. That's what I took from this post. The person might not have conveyed it well, but I think we all understood what they were getting.

A lot of fruit trees require some level of care in order to produce edible fruits. For example in my country, if you come across a wild apple or cherry tree, you really shouldn't eat the fruits. They taste pretty bad and could make you sick. Those trees are also often sick or plagued by insects/parasites.

A fine example of what happens when ignorant, conservative politicians think they have the right to pass legislation over women's bodies. These people don't even know how a woman's body functions, and yet they're allowed to make laws regarding them. This is some dystopian bull s**t.

    Kate Jones

I mean....there's not wanting abortion and then there's this. All of these people need to take a godd*mned basic health class to learn about the body and how things work because this is just about the dumbest thing i think i've ever heard. Also...what would be the point? You do know an ectopic pregnancy is not ever going to be brought to term? It will literally kill a woman by bursting her fallopian tube. There is literally no 'miracle' that can make an ectopic pregnancy viable. I cannot understand how these people are allowed to continue with this lunacy. At some point we have to say 'no more'. If someone claimed that there was no way they fathered a child because they only ever had sex at night and they believed that sperm were asleep at night and therefore you can't get pregnant...we'd say they were insane and laugh at them and go on with our day. But that's what this is. It's absolutely nuts and I would think it was coming from the Onion if it wasn't credited as the AP wire.

The f**k. Why are they even bringing reproductive habits (or what this would be called) into politics?!?!?! If a woman doesn't want to have children and would like to end the pregnancy, let her get an abortion! They have plenty of other stuff to focus on, yet they choose to talk about and make laws about whether a woman should be allowed to do what they like if they didn't want to become pregnant!

I’m still trying to figure out republicans’ endgame with this b******t. If they’re actually thinking in the long term, which I highly doubt as it’s never been their MO in the past, I suspect it has to do with preventing white women from having abortions, in order to increase the white, and potentially republican, population. They seem to forget all women, including non-white women, can get pregnant and opt to have abortions. So it’ll also increase those potentially Democratic populations as well. Either that, or they’re trying to promote a huge baby boom of unwanted children to increase the population to the point where parents and institutions such as schools are overwhelmed, and cannot adequately care for and educate everyone. Then they’ll have more than enough enough fodder to draft for their unnecessary wars, plus fill their for-profit prisons. It’s like they have a desire to create a large, and woefully uneducated, permanent lower class of serfs, who are ignorant of their rights and will accept their “place” without question. Maybe the answer is simple; they’re only thinking in the very short term, basically the next election cycle. So they’re just using it as a political stance/stunt to get more votes and stay in office, without a thought as to how it will all shake out in the future—-which they don’t care about because they’ll all be dead by then. Either way, it reeks of fear of extinction, as their numbers are dwindling, and they’re scared shitless of becoming a marginalized minority. Something they so richly deserve.

What about this idea. All politicians are in hook for the tax dollars they waste when they propose stupid c**p like this. If it fails, they have to pay the costs of those that had to stop their lives in order to educate/ fight this level of stupid. We could step it up a notch and require that such proposals shall be tested on those proposing such stupidity. I'm sure that Majorie Green would be happy to stand with her fellow clowns and have this done. And why in the hell do we drug test every retail working or burger flipper but they guys making policy are exempt. Christ I'm so tired of the stupidity of the right.

According to Mathieu O'Neil, Associate Professor at the News and Media Research Centre of the University of Canberra and Michael Jensen, Associate Professor at the Institute for Governance and Policy Analysis of the University of Canberra, three schools of thought have emerged to address this issue.

"The first suggests disinformation is so pervasive because distrust of traditional sources of authority, including the news media, keeps increasing," the academics pointed out. "When people think the mainstream media is not holding industries and governments to account, they may be more likely to accept information that challenges conventional beliefs."

Eratosthenes hired a man to pace the distance between the two cities and learned they were 5,000 stadia apart (~800 km). He could then use simple proportions to find the Earth's circumference — 7.2 degrees is 1/50 of 360 degrees, so 800 times 50 equals 40,000 kilometers. Since Earth is not a perfect sphere but a geoid, there was a minor error which is fair for a measurement made 2500 years ago.

Because you seem to have confused evolution with Mr. Potato Head. If a plains environment were to slowly transition to something much more wet and swampy (which is pretty much what the Great Plains looked like before they were the Great Plains), horses could, theoretically, develop adaptations for filter feeding on water plants - and it would still look NOTHING like this. ---- Also, this is not entirely relevant but it's bugging me immensely: neither of those animals 'evolved.' That's a domestic duck and a domestic horse. They are the result of intense selective breeding, not natural selection. The duck wouldn't survive in the wild without human assistance; the horse only survives because we wiped out all the things in North America that used to eat the true wild horses.

    Pieter LeGrande

Well the horse could have developed a trunk to act as a snorkel. They'd need that because the weight of the horse-shoes would keep them on the bottom. The duck, would survive - lots of them feral in Australia. And horses? So many gone wild in Australian alpine national parks they are having to cull the.

Edit only to add thanks and for clarification. My SO was a kind dear man, who played Santa Claus at nursing homes and literally rescued every lost kitty he ever met. We had very good years. And I live in assisted Living. That's why I lost so many. Plus we were very hard hit. We're rural, and in the first wave we had 75 cases. It's still active. I want to make this person to forcibly French kiss a known COVID ridden petri dish every day for 14 days. I lost my SO of 16 years, and 27 other friends to COVID. The only reason I really wouldn't do it,is I don't know any COVID petri dishes I dislike that much. This one infuriates me. .

Hospitals were full. People I knew did die, including my little sister who passed away, struggling for every breath, in a hastily converted operating theatre because there was no more room on the wards. People like this are so lucky not to have experienced that reality and be able to pretend it didn't happen.

So what can we do? Bradley Crocker, Lecturer & Ph.D. Candidate in Health Psychology at McGill University, thinks that in order to be saved from misinformation, we need to be exposed to it.

"Efforts to remove and label misinformation on social media platforms may help, but a more pertinent question is whether these efforts can match the rapid pace of misinformation spread," Crocker wondered. "In response to the growing pressure to control misinformation on their platforms, social media giants have generally relied on reactively removing or labeling false content after it’s widely noticed and reported."

Exactly. Just because we didn't have a name for them or didn't even know about them before does not mean they didn't exist. I really loath these kinds of people who genuinely think that effectively all medical issues are invented (as in they didn't actually exist until they were known) and not just discovered.

The thing is that today's kids actually live long enough to be diagnosed with Autism or cancer - which is ,at least in parts, because of vaccines. They were not the only factor but played a huge part in infant mortality dropping from nearly 50% in the early 1800s to about 3% today.

The diseases/conditions listed have always existed but were either dismissed or thought of as something else.

First, vaccines reduce or eliminate the effects of viral diseases, not congenital conditions or no -viral illnesses. The cause of SIDS still eludes researchers, so we don’t know if there’s any type of virus or other organic connection to it. involved. Autoimmunity, allergies, and diabetes all have effective treatments, and aren’t viruses. And what exactly do you mean by “ovarian failure”? Regardless, it’s safe to say, it also has no viral connection. Those conditions, as well as the others, have always existed. We’re just better at diagnosing and treating them. Back in your “good old days” we just threw people diagnosed as autistic, as well as those suffering from, Lupus, Tourette’s, and “seizures” (do you mean Epilepsy, perchance?) into criminally underfunded institutions where they were subjected to “treatments” that did more harm than good, and risked being “cared for” by exhausted nurses, and unvetted orderlies (scant background checking for lower level positions) who vented their frustrations and tendencies toward cruelty and perversion on them. You know, out of sight, out of mind? But they STILL existed! FFS, learn your history. Google “Willowbrook State School”, and you’ll see what I mean.

It's not even complicated. better understanding of conditions and diseases means more diagnosis. All those things were around then too, but they were not understood. Someone with Tourette's for eg might well have just ended up on the psych ward.

Yes, and before the vaccines, people didn't live to have children, so yes, research vaccines: How they work, why they work, what it looks like to live without them. New York state currently has a f*cking polio outbreak due to nimrods like this.

SIDS used to be called "crib death." Seizures were "spastic" (or, in the even older days, proof you were possessed by demons). Tourette's was definitely being possessed by demons. Autism was "that weird kid" or "the fae stole my baby and replaced it with a changeling." There was also a whole lot of "he ded, don't know why."

Exactly!!! Perfectly said. I am just trying to understand who is doing this “science that continues to prove this”??? Just because a person gives themself a title PHD, or actually have one done not make them a scientist or someone who actually stories fossils and other histories. When the person with a “Puppetry PHD” or “PHD in Packaging” or even the “PHD in Manga” (Japanese Comics) and yes these are all REAL Doctorate Programs In the US (forget about the Online Doctorates from Uganda or wherever where you can get it once you send that $$ to the Prince so he can send you millions of $$$ back (people still falling for this one too that tells you a lot). Who are the “scientists” PROVING this science. Same Scientist that was discredited immediately after linking Autism with Vaccines but it was too late because people love a good conspiracy. We all read the bold headlines but never the retractions. Being able to determine how old something like a fossils is is pretty simple science.

So, I don't know if y'all want to hear me rattle off another study I heard about, but they've tested swear words and how it effects our mental state. Cursing increases pain tolerance, physical endurance, and may possibly be a sign of higher intelligence and honesty. Apparently the worse the swear, the more of an affect it has on the swearer. Just google it for a source. Quite a bit has been written on it.

111Hz is almost the opposite of ultrasound. Also what the darned heck is the 11th harmonic? If they mean the 11th harmonic of 111Hz that's only 1.2KHz, so still not ultrasound, but my guess is that they mean "super magic woowoo power"...

"If encountering online misinformation is inevitable, our best approach to mitigate its effects may be to improve users’ abilities to recognize and dismiss it," Crocker said. "One of the most promising ways to do this uses experiential learning, stemming from something called inoculation theory."

"Inoculation theory is based on an analogy between resistance to persuasion and resistance to contagious disease. Just as exposing individuals to a weakened pathogen helps to protect them against severe illness (vaccination), tactfully exposing individuals to weakened forms of misinformation can improve their ability to recognize and resist it."

So I guess, in a way, the subreddit 'Facebook Science' is making the internet not only more fun but also safer.

Funny you should say Orwellian...That "panic" that supposedly happened over "The War of the Worlds" broadcast some 75 years ago was utter BS. The newspapers sensationalized it and said there was a panic when there was none because they were trying to get the government to step in and shut down radio as being an irresponsible news source. Much like this statement of Government Manufactured fog in retaliation for ignoring Covid restrictions is BS. If you are afraid of fog...maybe you shouldn't leave your home or....well...procreate.

We call them *heat shields*, and those temps aren't achieved even on re-entry if the angle of re-entry and shape of vehicle are such that friction-created heat is minimized. The shape of vehicles is designed to actually *force* the hot gases away from its surface, btw. This won't work for asteroids, b/c they rarely come in at an ideal-to-survive trajectory.

Exposure time. As in very short - the heat needs to conduct into your body - which takes appreciable time if you are wearing any kind of clothing - and still takes time to prenetrate bare skin.

Taken directly from NASA..."The thermosphere lies between the exosphere and the mesosphere. “Thermo” means heat, and the temperature in this layer can reach up to 4,500 degrees Fahrenheit. If you were to hang out in the thermosphere, though, you would be very cold because there aren’t enough gas molecules to transfer the heat to you. This also means there aren’t enough molecules for sound waves to travel through."

There was absolutely no consideration for the health and well being of children when the idea to school via Zoom was concocted. Not to mention, schools automatically assume everyone has internet. They don't and many can't get it. It simply isn't offered by any provider in the area.

If their findings can't be repeated, they either had no idea what they were doing or they were full of BS. That's one of the problems when non-scientists learn what "basic research" is. Basic research involves figuring out what drives something basic even if no practical application exists for that knowledge. Once the knowledge exists, some other intrepid scientist will find an application for it.

First, the flies neither killed the animal or break the animal down...they smell the dead animal and lay eggs which hatch into maggots that feed on the carcass and break it down. Your immune system are like the flies smelling for the virus that is attacking your body. It releases anti-bodies or maggots (proteins) that attack the virus and breaks it down preventing it from replicating. Vaccines work by releasing a weakened version of the virus in your system so the antibodies can have a way to recognize the live virus early and destroy it before it takes hold and can spread. The reason why HIV and AIDS is so deadly is because most viruses need to leave the body to mutate before coming back to attack again. AIDS attaches itself to T-cells and mutates within the body so your immune system is constantly trying to fight a new invader while having no down time.

Are they trying to say the Romans were uneducated? Because half the maths and physics concepts used by engineers today are the exact same ones used by the Romans. No they didn't call it a "degree" but they didn't just send random dudes out to build roads. They had pretty intense schooling and apprenticeships. Conservatives trying to degrade education by appealing to this mythical past human who was somehow smarter and healthier despite literally everything we know about them, is just exposing how incredibly ignorant they are about history. Something that could be remedied ironically, with a decent education.

Actually, many did have educations in the form of apprenticeships or formal education in schools to learn math and philosophy. They just didn't get an expensive piece of paper to prove it.

Well, I was born in Rome and I traveled the Via Appia many times because some of my friends lived there. If you want to bend your car frame, go more than a few Kmh where the paving stones are still on the surface. Also, 2000 years is hardly an "eternity". One more thing: we still use similar methods to build modern roads, we just put asphalt on top so it can be resurfaced without having to quarry a mountain each time. These people likely think we build modern roads by pouring asphalt over dirt.

My friend Patty-Jo. She was a mother of three and a grandmother to 5. She was perfectly healthy just celebrated her 50th birthday on a Saturday the following Friday she was gone. The first thought of her cause of death was a heart attack or sudden cardiac death given her family history and history of cigarette smoking. Her autopsy revealed a perfect size heart no blockages in her coronary arteries. No signs of any aneurysms or blood clots. Her lungs appeared inflamed and hyper inflated but that not uncommon in early stages of COPD. Not severe enough to cause her death. Toxicology report clean no drugs or common toxins. Her pathology report (which took 9 agonizing weeks) revealed Covid 19 and signs of hypoxia which was determined to be her cause of death. There proven.

Well, they started out kinda right. "Baby" carrots were the ugly ones that do not pass the pretty produce test in the beginning. Now they could be that or a particular type grown specifically to be made into baby carrots. They are cut down to a uniform size and shape. Not ground and molded. They actually are soaked in a very dilute chlorine bleach solution that meets EPA standards for drinking water. So, it is very diluted.

Yes! It is not like colloquially saying "I have a theory that a giant platypus controls the world". In science it means a hypothesis based in evidence and reason which has been tested many times.

Colloquial use of "Theory": Something I just pulled out of my a*s, not even an hypothesis. Scientific use of "Theory": A structured framework to explain a group of facts or phenomena in the natural world. Also, science very rarely, at least in modern times, toss an existing theory away for a new one when evidence warrants it. New theories usually incorporate old one. i.e. Newtonian physics and Relativity.

Too many people confuse the words "theory" and "hypothesis." A hypothesis is an idea that requires research. Theories have evidence and are accepted as the most likely explanation, barring new evidence. Gravity is "only a theory," but if I drop a piano out the window, and you're standing below it, it will hit you.

"Peer reviewed" means that "peers" i.e. scientists in the same fields, reproduced an empirical experiment with same or similar results. "Empirical" is the important part here, at least in the hard sciences. In softer sciences like history, psychology, biblical studies, or any discipline where empirical evidence is hard to come by, have somewhat more relaxed standards by necessity.

They also cause toxicity if they are not lined with another metal and used long term. Cuprimine is the name of the drug to treat it. Its common for tin or stainless steel to be used as a lining to avoid it. You'll be fine if you have a Moscow Mule on the weekend but chronic use can cause issues. India now requires new copper vessels to be lined with other metals because they've had an issue with parents using them to heat milk for babies and have too much copper absorbed over the repeated use.

Copper is a strong antibiotic, combined with zinc it makes brass . A study found that leaving water in a brass container for three days killed over 99% of its toxic germs including cholera and other water borne illnesses that can cause loss of life and even death..

5.5 to 8.5? So it's both acid and alkaline? Also, those numbers, make no sense. Considering the scale goes to a max of 14, how tf is avacado in the 15's. Drain cleaner and bleach sit around 13-14, so avacado's must be lethal.

It's actual countin in fish too. In the inner ears of fish there are otholites, small stone like structures, that help them keeping balance, indicating up/down, etc. These otholites grow a fraction of a milimeter each year and by cutting them in half and looking through a microscope you can count the rings.

When I was young, I was also confused about apes existing. My husband explained to me that the reason the ape we evolved from doesn't exist is because it became us. Once he said that, it made sense. That doesn't mean that other apes can't exist.

I feel like there needs to be different verbiage for "American fundamentalist anti-science self-proclaimed 'Christian'" and "People who want to follow the radical teachings of a middle-eastern Jewish wanderer who advocated for the poor and marginalized, taught that God is Love, was friends with sinners, and relentlessly opposed the religious elite". Like there are a lot of people who want to be the second and run far away from the former, but are lumped together.

If extreme weather and its results are caused by sin, then why does the Bible belt have the most powerful, frequent, and destructive tornados? Entire towns have been decimated in the Bible belt. Meanwhile, up here in leftist, godless Massachusetts, we have a blizzard every few years during which we lose power for a few hours.

In countries like Hungary there is a huge latency, most victims never report the assault or the police refuse to pursue investigations. There are still strong prejudices against women (even within the police and court) who face violence in the family or are raped, and there are serious shortcomings in the way the Hungarian Penal Code defines and punishes crimes of sexual violence. This is why.

    Nikki Sevven

The difference is because Sweden defines rape quite broadly, and because the report rate is much higher. It does NOT mean there are more rapes per capita in Sweden.
