They say imitation is the greatest form of flattery, but what if you’re using it to hide in plain sight? Have you ever seen an ant that just didn’t seem right? It was moving a little different or even jumping a little? Chances are it may have been one of these Myrmarachne species or ant mimicking spiders. Living amongst ants, these spiders camouflage themselves amongst them and blend in so well it’s difficult to tell them apart at times. Using their front two legs held out straight, they look like the ant’s antennae and move in the same motion as the ants they are mimicking. This species are amongst some red and black ant colonies here on the coastal area of Perth, Western Australia and are a perfect match to the ants. Gaining some form of protection form the ants, they go about their spider business uninterrupted.
