You have to respect the company you work for. You can never be late, never question anything and do an exceptional job every day. You must give multiple weeks notice before taking any holidays or quitting. But if the company decides that they’ve had enough of you, well, you could be unemployed at a moment’s notice!

It’s 2024, and it would be great to believe that society is finally fair and equal. But that would be far from the truth. There are still plenty of frustrating double standards affecting us all, so Redditors have recently been calling out the ones they’re tired of. Below, you’ll find a list of double standards that people no longer want to accept, so enjoy reading through and be sure to upvote the inequalities you can’t stand either!

Somebody Just Asked People To Post Examples Of Double Standards, And 45 Responses Were Spot-On I saw a post on a Facebook group I'm in recently. It was a selfie of a mother with her little boy in the backseat eating a pudding cup with no spoon and she had captioned it "making sure he's making his future girlfriends happy" or something along those lines. I was disgusted by it, my boyfriend laughed. He tried to tell me I was being stuck up and a prude about it. I asked him if I was a father posting a picture of his daughter eating a popsicle and captioned it similar about making future boyfriends happy would you feel the same way? He looked like I slapped him in his face but he instantly got what I was saying. Sexualizing children in any capacity is gross af and it even happens to little boys. People just need to do better and let kids simply be kids without putting sexual undertones to it. So f*****g weird.

Somebody Just Asked People To Post Examples Of Double Standards, And 45 Responses Were Spot-On Being a morning person and getting up early to get a bunch of stuff done, then going to bed early, is considered virtuous and mature. Being a night person and staying up late to get stuff done, then sleeping late the next day, is considered disorganized and lazy. Even if you did the same amount of work and slept the same number of hours. I have colleagues who work 6am to 3pm, and people constantly chirp about how efficient they are. But when someone at my office asked if they could work 11 am to 8 pm because that fit better with their body’s energy cycle, they were mocked for wanting to oversleep like a teenager, and the request was denied.

I agree, I’ve always been made to feel guilty for being an evening person. I was genuinely shocked when I found out that a lot of the morning people in my family actually go to bed at 9pm. So when they get up at 5am, they’ve actually spent 8 hours in bed, which is more than I usually get. And on top of that, the ones who shamed me the most (mother and grandmother) also usually took additional naps in the afternoons like toddlers.

What time of the day or evening you are most energetic depends on your chronotype and it is largely determined genetically, so apart from fine-tuning, not much can be changed. Evening people have to adapt to the world of morning people and it is a complete lie that an evening person could become a morning person. It causes the same problems as, for example, switching to summer time/winter time. I'm an evening person and I can get out of bed in the morning, as long as nobody expects anything sensible from me before noon.

This! I'm a complete night-owl and do a lot better when I'm doing things later, and I feel like I do more. But when I sleep in I'm constantly lectured and called lazy. If you work better earlier or later than others, it shouldn't matter as long as you're doing your best work, right?

peoples' natural circadian rhythms are different, and I don't understand why we have failed to adjust societal standards to it. differences in bodily rhythms are classified as disorders despite being a significant percentage of people and having no ill effect other than "you're not productive at a convenient time for us."

THIS! Who is living well on disability/ssdi? Currently fighting for long-term disability and they don't see what I'm like outside that 15 minutes to 45 minutes. They don't see me struggling like an upside down turtle to get out of bed, bent over like a Disney cartoon witch to go to the bathroom, get something to eat, or walk around to any room... you stand up for more than a few minutes or sit down for more than 15 or not be able to go to normal places that fully abled people are able to go. They don't see the intense pain that for me is just a 10 (because I've been dealing with it for so long) but for somebody who doesn't have chronic pain would be a 20 and a trip to the emergency room. Anyone who thinks people just want to be on disability because they're lazy is beyond me.. no words. I was making more than $3,000 a month and now if I get disability I'll be making maybe $1,000 a month. Disability isn't living it's only existing

My application was denied, because on a good day I can walk unaided for about 10 minutes. Never mind in a week 6 days will likely be bad days where I can’t walk at all, I am apparently more abled than most not-abled, so didn’t qualify. It’s really weird being unwell and in pain and for someone not going through it saying it’s not that bad or enough to warrant needing help? Like my feelings aren’t valid?

Been there. I was on supervised release due to a manic episode that put me in jail. 3 years of probation, but the entire time I could not afford a doctor to get meds. I had a friend of the family who would supply samples that I lived off of, so I was not balanced. I was a ticking time bomb. You would think they would require someone help me, but living in Florida at the time I was in the coverage gap. I made too much for Medicaid and too little for Obamacare.

Also, in America, if you have any money, you'll be denied because if you're healthy enough to work or own anything of value, you're not disabled enough to get help. If you're not dirt poor with no prospects, you can't get disability. It's ridiculous.

Seems to me that disability applications are automatically declined for years. By the time they are approved, the applicant has gone through their resources and probably their family's as well. They may be homeless, bad credit, and have other issues that keep them from being able to recover. It seems that if the benefits were granted at the beginning, not only would they be better off but society would benefit as well.

Somebody Just Asked People To Post Examples Of Double Standards, And 45 Responses Were Spot-On I solely raised my daughter as a single father from the time she was a year old until she was almost six when I married my wife. The number of people who have asked about my daughter's mother just to reply with "Oh, she must have had PPD." or "There must be a mental illness involved." or "Maybe she will come around in a few years." is absolutely staggering. Like no man, she just decided she wanted to go party instead of being a mom to our child. No child support. No financial or emotional contribution. Nothing. Hell, I couldn't even get a copy of my daughter's health insurance card when her old one expired because "I wasn't on the paperwork" despite the fact that I was the one who filled out the paperwork for it at the hospital the day after she was born. It's infuriating knowing full well that had the roles been reversed, and I'd have been the one to leave, I'd 100% instantly be considered a deadbeat father.

Welcome to my life! As a slightly north of middle aged queer couple with a 10yo son we adopted at birth, the bureaucratic hell we go through for the most basic things is practically a full-time job. However, it’s absolutely nothing compared to how suspicious we’re treated in public, from cashiers, Karens, other parents & even police. We’re constantly having to prove ourselves & justify being parents. We both carry copies of all his birth/adoption documents & his/our passports, because even cops haven’t normalized gay dads. Then there’s the assumption birth mother somehow failed. Even from the most well-meaning supporters. When I mention she was my closest female friend who died shortly after childbirth & had spent her final months focused on carrying a healthy baby & planning for his entire future without her, even at the expense of treatments to keep her here just a little longer & out of pain, they typically walk away with their entire foot in their mouths.

Every so often I have to call the school, doctor and daycare and have myself replaced as primary contact because they keep defaulting to calling her mom about updates. Her mom lives a state away and has never done any of it. I've learned that if I place her as an emergency contact instead of secondary contact then I actually get updates.

Several years ago, Missouri did in in-depth audit of SNAP & welfare as a political move. They found less that 0.15% of the state money (over all, not per individual) was not used as intended. Of that percentage, the vast majority was unintentional (buying or trying to buy things not covered for example), with the next highest percentage being paperwork errors where things were reported incorrectly, and after that a tiny amount being actual fraud. They spent more money on the audit than they found in that fraud amount.

This is largely incorrect. The audits on poor people are rare. The IRS doesn't want to spend resources on low value audits, but they do randomly audit people and that will hit low income as well as high, because the random audits are based on having several high risk claims in your taxes, regardless of their value. For instance claiming a disabled child and a deduction for school housing are usually incompatible, but in some rare cases, can happen. This can trigger an audit on anyone, because 99% of the time it's wrong. Poor people often trip themselves up by claiming too many exemptions that are not intended to be stacked together.

Exactly. If the cost of pursuing the error is more than the error itself then the IRS won't bother. Poor people don't have money or assets for them to seize.

This is close, but not technically true unless by "poor" you mean the middle class. The IRS manages most tax returns through a computer system that works decently enough for the vast majority of returns submitted. This computer system cannot efficiently process the crazy tax filings submitted by the truly wealthy, so their tax returns are much more frequently audited and processed by hand. Unfortunately, the IRS does not have adequate staffing to actually investigate many of these filings, so even though you're far more likely to be audited above a certain earning threshold, you're also far more likely to get away with tax fraud. That's of course completely ignoring the fact that the tax system is heavily weighted in favor of the wealthy to begin with. Yes, high income earners supply the majority of tax revenues in the US, but as a percentage of their worth (and impact to their wellbeing), the differences are stark. This is especially true in states that prioritize sales taxes.

IRS funding has been cut so much that they do not have the money to fight with big corporations over taxes not paid. A business or wealthy person can afford to drag out a lengthy court case if needed. The IRS can't. It's much easier and less costly to go after people that are essentially poor. Keep in mind Pandas every time some one says "I will cut taxes" one of the first places to be chopped is the least popular, or the IRS.

In many Western cultures, being outgoing, sociable, and outspoken is often celebrated and encouraged. It's seen as the norm to want to chat, network, and be the life of the party. But when it comes to introverts who may crave quiet, solitude, or just less social interaction, the script flips. It’s socially acceptable to nudge the quiet person in the room and say, "Why don't you talk more?" But imagine telling a chatty person, "Can you be quiet for a bit?" It would be considered rude or offensive. This double standard underscores a deeper societal bias towards extroversion. The noise and buzz of constant interaction are often valued more than the quiet, reflective spaces introverts thrive in. It's like we're saying one way of interacting with the world is better than the other, when in reality, both have their strengths and should be equally respected. In a world that can't stop talking, sometimes we forget the power of silence and introspection. - An extroverted introvert.

Being an introvert isn't simply 'being quiet.' I'm at introvert but more than capable and willing to make some noise when I need/want to. Being an introvert means I get my energy from being alone, an extrovert gets their energy from being around others. Don't confuse introvert with timid.

I had several conversations with extroverted friends during covid about how the discomfort they felt during lockdown about not having enough social interaction is the discomfort introverts feel all the time about having too much.

I loved the lock down. I like being home, not having to go into stores, I loathe shopping. It was great. I didn't mind wearing a mask, it was a lovely barrier that made it easier to be quiet.

Thats because if you ask someone to talk, the message is that you want to hear what they have to say, if you tell them to stop talking it says that you don't want to hear what they have to say, and I would be insulted. So I see it as 2 different things. I'm not super quiet and I'm an introvert. People just wear me out sooner than extroverts.

People often comment on my tendency to not talk a lot in most situations. There are situations where I speak freely and interact fully, but normally I am a reserved type. When asked why am I so quiet, I just say "better to be thought of as fool than open my mouth and prove it".

I've had people ask me what is up in social situations b/c of my face (I look bored or even angry when really I'm just standing there with RBF). I finally have started saying, "Look, I have social anxiety and my social meter just hit empty, so if I look annoyed, I'm not really, just tired."

According to IMBT, I am a 100% introvert. I don't like loud parties and going out much, however, while at work I do my best to communicate with people in the most efficient way possible. Now I have several clearly introverted colleagues and it is a chore to get even the most essential information from them. I do agree that it is easier for extroverts, but being an introvert is not a valid excuse to not put an effort into your communication skills.

I would think of them as being shy, not just introvert. They may need a little bit of friendly banter before they are comfortable. If they are approached like it's an interrogation it will cause them to feel so uncomfortable they won't want to speak. This is just what I was like years ago. Now I'm not shy I can be quite outgoing if need be but it took me several years. I wanted to change, I hated being shy. You can't force someone to change. Although I had great friends that helped me without my noticing until much later.

And don't forget all the HR departments who manage to let it "slip" if you need help. Or the bosses who claim to support you but penalise you if you need time off. I had a coworker who tried to unalive themselves and were placed in a 16 week recovery program. When she called her boss to let them know they asked her if she could put off the treatment until she found a replacement and finished some projects. She doesn't work there anymore.

Ages ago I used to work for a tutoring agency, who had a great cancellation policy: Cancel with less than 48 hours and you have to pay in full. But also, if your tutor cancelled with less than 48 hours you’d get your next session for free. I have since introduced this policy to a lot of work places I have been at.

I had a physio appointment once where they warned me that if I arrived late, they would cancel the appointment. I arrived bang on time despite having left earlier because of delays on public transport. They told me if I'd been any later they would have cancelled. I then had to wait 45 minutes for the physiotherapist who was running late on appointments. It wouldn't have mattered if I'd rocked up half an hour late because they still wouldn't have gotten to my appointment by then.

Yes! Or doctors can schedule appointments for every five minutes, and then get 45 minutes plus behind making me wait in the waiting room for 45 minutes. I get it sometimes patients take longer than planned and emergencies happened, but if a doctor purposely schedules their appointments too close that should not be allowed. Also then they ask me to arrive 15 minutes early even though I've been there 10 times before.

Somebody Just Asked People To Post Examples Of Double Standards, And 45 Responses Were Spot-On Pretending to take a cigarette break is more accepted than taking an actual break. And not just at work. Like, it's weird if I take five minutes to go outside, decompress, and breathe in some fresh air. But if I inhale toxic fumes from a burning plant while I do that, it's fine.

Somebody Just Asked People To Post Examples Of Double Standards, And 45 Responses Were Spot-On The double standard between women, especially teenage girls, being fans of things, and men being fans of things. It’s deemed as somewhat normal and almost to be expected than men go absolutely mental over sport, especially things like football, to the point that when there are football games on the local police are usually on standby to deal with the riots and fights that usually happen. And that’s just kind of seen as part of it and to be expected and is just people being passionate. On the other hand, if you get a group of teenage girls getting a bit excited over like, idk, a BTS concert or a Taylor Swift show or something, suddenly that’s deemed weird and stupid and they get dragged for it. It’s literally the same thing. The latter is also far less disruptive yet is the thing that is always demonised. It’s not a new thing either it goes back as far as like The Beatles and Elvis where it was just passed off as ‘ridiculous hysteria” meanwhile you’ve got a brexit geezer going absolutely feral because Manchester United lost. Lowkey pisses me off a lot that anything women and teenage girls like is demonised yet things like sport get a free pass.

That's seen as being so wrong. Guess what, just let people like what they like. Oh and don't be a prick about it and ruin it for others by having riots.

I'm a gamer and have been since a kid (40+ years). I only play a couple of hours a week and I find it relaxing. But my mates find it weird. The same mates who spend 6 hours play golf in all weathers on chasing a golf ball... Or traveling 5 hours to watch over paid men fall over kicking a ball for 90 minutes and then complain that another bloke behind a screen got the result wrong (VAR) and spend another 5 hours traveling back... And I'm weird?

In addition to holidays, birthdays and sick days, I included 6 "mental health days" to my employees' benefit package. So, if it's snowing and you want to go build a snowman with your kids, it was covered and you didn't have to pretend to need a sick day. I had much happier employees and fewer sick days taken than most companies in my industry. A happy employee is a loyal employee.

Somebody Just Asked People To Post Examples Of Double Standards, And 45 Responses Were Spot-On Rich people don't face consequences for crimes like normal people at all. Fines were designed to punish the poor and let the rich get away with disregard for society. Bail was also designed this way because it means your ability to get out of jail is dependent on the size of your bank account. People should not be fined for crimes or be able to get out of them with money period.

That's why I like the Finnish model where fines are based on income. Fining everyone the same amount for let's say speeding is only a punishment for the poor. If you can afford to drive a Ferrari then you've not likely to be affected by a £100 fine.

Her Mom was having a full-on fit about how unfair it was, and God love the reporter, she just turned to her and asked, "Sooooo - you don't feel your daughter should get the same punishment as MY daughter would get if SHE were caught driving on the wrong side of the freeway at 2:00am, not only drunk but high on cocaine?" It's because women are judged on their ability to reproduce and that wanes as they get older. Men are judged on their income and that rises as they get older. It's not fair but that's the way it is. A 21 year old man is judged just as harshly as a 45 year old woman. Not nice.

Some male colleagues of mine were talking about how they didn't like women with lots of make-up. I pointed out I was wearing make-up, and they were, 'No, you're not." Dude, I'm wearing lipstick, mascara, eyebrow pencil and face powder. My face is literally fully covered in make-up. But apparently to them that was as 'no make-up' as their faces. They are good colleagues and I don't mind it (and I like wearing make-up, I truly think I look better with it), but it kinda amazed them just how much make-up it takes to look groomed as a professional woman.

Makeup when done right is supposed to make you look more naturally attractive as if you weren't wearing makeup at all or at the very least less than you actually are. This is also why a lot of men don't like makeup because it is literally designed to make you appear more desirable than you normally are. It's selfish, not going to lie, but there you are. Heck the same sentiment may be held by women if men did the same thing.

The op is comparing herself with makeup and then without. It's not the fault of her co workers. If someone I know wears makeup most of the time and then goes without, I would be concerned that something was wrong. Plus if she or he is using cover up to even tones, they will possibly look a little ill if they are paler. If you work at a job where they require women look a specific way, makeup skirts etc. That is a double standard. If someone were to require me to wear makeup, I'd demand that all the employees had to wear it too.

There was a point where obese men were considered sexy (probably perpetuated by them) as that was a sign they had lots of money so could afford luxurious food.

No, I don't, because, at least in the U.S., it's much easier and cheaper to buy heavily processed foods, many of which contain a high percentage of fructose. A significant amount of fructose gets shuttled into the de novo fatty acid synthesis pathway (make new fat pathway), so, if you're poor or have financial restrictions, often the only kind of food you can easily afford is also full of an ingredient that will increase your overall fat. “The truth is rarely pure and never simple.” -Oscar Wilde

The racism is different tho. In most societies, it is advantageous to be white and the systems are built to support white people. Racial prejudice against white people is not systemic in the western world, so the prejudice doesn't affect daily life, whereas black people are severely affected by systemic racism in their day to day life.

Brazil for a while and I was continually physically and verbally attacked, harassed, bullied, and objectified just because I’m light-skinned. And I’ll say, it is the exact same thing as being racist towards black people. If you judge someone for the color of their skin, you’re racist, no if ands or buts.

Works the same in many places of Latin America. I'm fed up of being the "whitexican" that has no right to be a Mexican because I don't look the way I should, and that by default is a bad person and deserves to be treated poorly.

Somebody Just Asked People To Post Examples Of Double Standards, And 45 Responses Were Spot-On This is probably small potatoes, but it’s kinda crazy that people are comfortable demanding height minimums on dating sites and just in conversation. Quite a few tinder profiles say ‘must be over 6ft’. It’s the only demand on a physical attribute that is commonly casually stated. It’s totally okay to feel that way, but it seems kinda rough to remind every short guy swiping that he has limited options. I’m over 6th and it still kinda pissed me off to see it. I have short friends. I always imagine the painful little ping they’d feel any time they saw it.

I don't understand why tall guys are desirable. My first boyfriend wasn't much taller than me and he was great. My husband is much taller, but I don't care if he was shorter. It literally is so far down my list in standards.

It is not "small potatoes". It is a serious problem in society and no one will do anything about it. Height discrimination is the last acceptable prejudice. It is socially unacceptable to call someone "fat" or "stupid" or the "N" word, yet it is completely acceptable to call a short person "smurf" or "midget". And if we complain, we are accused of having short man's syndrome and our complaints are ignored or blown off. I had friends put a milk crate behind a podium one time when I was supposed to speak. They thought it was hilarious. And it affects us financially too. A person who is 5 feet 6 inches making $50,000 per year would expect to make about $2,000 more if they were 5 feet 7 inches, and $4,000 more if they were 5 feet 8 inches. It hurts just as bad to be called "smurf" as it does to be called fat. But fat people can diet. The only way I can get taller is very expensive, painful surgery and months of being in a wheelchair to gain 2 inches in height.

    Luke Branwen

Not all fat people can diet - there can be hormonal problems, medications, disabilities and many other reasons. And even if we can and won't, I think the amount of basic respect we receive shouldn't be dependant on whether we're the "good fats" considerate of thin people's wishes not to see us. You made an amazing point about height double standards, then ruined it with "if fatsos want basic decency, they can always starve themselves lmao".

So what do you want now? They're at least honest. It they would write that, they'd still not date short men. It's just the same as a man not wanting to date a tall woman, and this happens just as often. It's wrong to shame anyone gor having preferences, as long as those are not outrageously illegal. Like wanting to date a child or demanding that a partner has no rights

Another component to this is, as a gay man in a queer space (frequently overrun with hen/bridal parties or girls night out in a non threatening space) there’s an assumption it’s ok to touch or even grope us. There’s a mentality that if they objectify & grope us they’re safe from reciprocation. When they assume we’re not into them or it’s not arousing it’s somehow ok for them to touch us. No consideration for how utterly inappropriate it is in the first place, but even less that bi men are queer men & bi men frequent the same queer spaces as gay men. So the queer they’re groping may indeed be just as attracted to women as dyed in the wool straight men.

I’m American (so I’m not sure if this happens in other countries) and Christian people when they sit at your dinner table and do the guilt thing right before you eat saying “Wait, arent we going to pray first?” And even the non religious people look guilty and pretend to pray. It took me until my 30’s to realize the double standard if I were another religion and sat at their table and insisted we pray to my god, they likely wouldn’t take so kindly to it. Now I say “you’re welcome to pray but I’m going to go ahead and start eating”

Government officials pretending to be medical doctors and being the be all end all to the decision if a female can get a certain Healthcare need. 100% of the time it's denied and even the 12+ year medically trained actual doctors are threatened with fines and long jail time (losing their licenses) if they do or even suggest the Healthcare procedure. If anyone else non government pretended to be a doctor and did this, they'd be put under the ground. Yet untrained govt jerks get to play pretend doctor and get away with it. Now they've decided that even a 100% guaranteed non viable (or even dead) must be carried to the final day months later. Females can and will die from this but the government "doctors" are the only say so. I loathe the usa govt for their obviously loud loathing of females. Of all ages.

In Germany, fortunately, we have many employee rights. We are usually talking about notice periods of 1-7 months. And they apply to both sides! In addition, dismissals by the employer usually require a good reason. Even a reason such as "not doing a good job" must be sufficiently proven and even then, dismissal is the last resort. There are exceptions in both directions, e.g. for small companies or severely disabled persons.

People who have transplants, their anti-rejection meds, which they have to take for the rest of their lives are so out of control priced, something like $45,000-$55,000 a month. Same thing their health insurance is outrageous and if you are on medicaid, you can't work over so many hours to stay on medicaid to afford the meds. Keeping that person Poor and not being able to support themselves and having to use other govt. programs to try to survive, Makes no sense.

Zero tolerance policies at school mean that the victim is punished along with the bully if it gets physical at school, if the victim tries to defend themselves in any way. One of the worst messages we could give our kids is to not reach out for help, or defend themselves.

Bullying done by kids is rightfully frowned upon and efforts are made to stop it (whether it works or not, but at least there are efforts). Bullying done by adults on the other hand is still mostly ignored. I read this morning that 20% of the work force is bullied by other employees and a good propertion of the bullying is even done by bosses.

Often the victims are told off for not having enough empathy and understanding for their poor, tortured bully. Honestly I don't give a damn about the sad family life of a bully who tortured me mercilessly. And I shouldn't be expected to feel different without being helped first. There are far more programmes to help bullies overcome their traumatising situations than there are for the victims. Because the victims suffer quietly and bullies act out. It's also standard to remove a bullying victim from their social circles and classes, forcing them to adjust to that and then dealing with the aftermath alone, while nothing happens to the bully and they get help on top.

If you make any mistake with money like overdraft, miss a payment, forget to pay tax, you get royally screwed and have to often pay even more in penalties and get no say in the matter. But if the banks, business, or insurance f***s up they owe you nothing and you often have to fight to get what you owe and often still lose out in money and time

Currently in the UK, banks can no longer charge customers more than a maximum amount/charge per month/bounced payment/etc. But HMRC (British version of the IRS) WILL charge multiple late payment fees, then apply a late payment fee if you're late paying that charge, and again, and again, and there is no limit! Had a client who managed to accumulate over £10k purely in penalties/late payment charges (despite the account being paid in full for all other taxes) - oh and they apparently don't have to tell you when a charge is applied, you're expected to check your account online and look for it as its "your responsibility". You also cant be expected to pay back any debts that havent been raised in over 7 years, but HMRC can and will bill you a "debt" they've applied to your account that is over 10yrs old & you can't argue because HMRC don't keep records over 7yrs, even if you provide them statements FROM THEM showing account is paid in full AFTER the periods they claim you owe them for!

I did punch one guy once. We were both servers and he would go in for a feel whenever he wanted to (on all the women). I asked him, I begged him, I flat out told him to stop and he wouldn't. So the next time I punched his lights out. I had to do that TWICE for him to get the message. This was back in the 80s when this was the only way for women to fight back against harassment.

Amen! I was married to the "nicest, sweetest, etc." who did verbally, emotionally and physically abuse me. Ran through money, would not work, alienated friends and family. I, being raised with certain morals, stayed with it for years, honoring my vows and all that. Did not step out for almost 19 years, but met someone that was kind and supportive, and I ran away from home for 2 weeks. Went back, being the stubborn idiot that I am, but took her home a few weeks later. I had to speak with the police when I got back, told him the situation. He asked why I didn't hit back. He understood my side eye. Filed for divorce, and on the day the papers were served, I met someone who is my ideal fit...and has been for 24 years. Same with bullying between different sexes. If a boy is bullying a girl and the girl fights back, the girl is considered big and tough and is applauded (rightfully so) but if a girl is bullying a boy in any capacity and the boy fights back, he is considered a monster and is severely punished, while the girl is given little to no punishment at all.

They are not quite the same thing. I was circumcised at 3 days old, I'm Jewish. For me and most other men who were circumcised as babies, it makes no difference to my life at all and I don't consider it to be mutilation any more than a body piercing or cosmetic surgery but as I said, this is just my view and experience. For women though, female circumcision is far more traumatic and the reasons for it are far more sinister. It is all about controlling and suppressing women and the damage caused by it frequently makes sex extremely painful and and sometimes impossible.

My buddy in college admitted it’s always painful to be “excited” so I encouraged him to see a doctor. His circumcision was botched but he had no idea, he figured it’s normal to be in pain. Surgery fixed it. I always wondered how many men suffer silently, not knowing that pain and discomfort isn’t how everyone lives.

I 100% agree that young boys should not be circumcised unless it's necessary for medical reasons. However, FGM can make even passing urine an incredibly painful experience for the rest of the girls life, let alone having sex, periods, having a smear test or giving birth.

Part of that is because they are done by unqualified people and often not in medical facilities. The same negative outcomes can occur to penises also; I personally know a couple who have told me in detail about their "benefits" of an unwanted and unwarranted amputation.

There's very little similarity between the two. One is the complete excision of an organ, the other is removing some skin. We should stop comparing these. One is amputation, the other a trim. It trivializes fgm to compare it to circumcision.

What kind of reasoning is this? Anyone cutting on someone's body without their explicit consent is not OK. It doesn't trivialize fgm, it's actually the opposite. Comments like this actually trivialize circumcision and it's a human rights violation to "trim" away "some skin" on a defenseless infant boy. Who decides what or how much is a trim and what is an excision? I submit that removing any skin (which is also an organ by the way) which contains thousands of nerve endings, potentially affects sexual function and/or satisfaction, and potentially creates further health issues down the road is not only unnecessary but squarely equivalent to genial mutilation.

To be fair though, female circumcision is a whole lot worse than male circumcision. I'm not saying that either is okay but while a boy looses a little skin a girl gets mutilated in a whole different level. Female circumcision means that the whole visible clitoris is carved out, and depending on the cultural background, sometimes a big part of the labias too and her vagina is stitched shut. That's a tad bit more serious. Boys dying from circumcision is rare (that still doesn't make it right) but girls dying from sepsis due to the deep, huge wound getting infected is quite common. So again, whole both is not okay, the issue is more pressuring for girls.

It used to be thought that circumcism reduced the incidence of penile cancer, but later studies did not support this conclusion. It only valid to the extent that you won’t develop cancer in your foreskin if you don’t have one.

That cancer is caused by a virus which has a vaccine now. The virus can cause cancers in anyone, not just 1 sex. There are also other methods available to reduce transmission risk if someone is concerned.

This!! I’m very anti-circumcision and really don’t understand how it’s still practiced so widely. It’s a trauma to the baby! And most AMAB people don’t ever really get to address it because it’s considered socially acceptable.

Unless it’s for medical reasons then it’s wrong. ANY physical change of a child is abuse. I don’t care if it’s a 1/10 or a 10/10 level of cutting, stitching, change of bodily function. Wrong is wrong and you cannot justify that in any way shape or form. Boy or girl, they are entitled to bodily autonomy and adults ought to respect that and protect it. I really couldn’t give a tinker’s cuss what anyone’s religion says. If your religion encourages the ‘modification’ of a child’s body then there’s a problem with your religion. I got in hot water for this last week on here, I haven’t changed my viewpoint, abuse is abuse no matter who your god/s is/are.

This is what I never understood: They're both races, right? I've tried to have someone explain this, and they said it's not racist if it's against the race who's in the higher class/ranks higher. And you may find a few things here, first of all: IT'S STILL A RACE!! Second: A certain race ranking higher or being more commonly richer from birth, ...that's literally racism, if there was no racism, then there would be no "race hierarchy", if that even exists. Still don't know why.

It's kind of weird to say people are racist against skin colors. They are racist against people they perceive as being of other races (all other races or just some of them). These races do not have a one-to-one correlation to color of skin. I mean, there is a huge variation in shade and coloration of "black" people in the US, moreso than "white" people. And there are people from India with skin as dark as a dark-skinned Black American, yet there are probably people who would be more racist against one over the other. "against certain skin colors" is incorrect and yucky. It reminds me when people talk about "black bodies" - just don't do that.

Romance and love between straight people is perfectly fine and normal to depict in children's media, in fact many many Disney movies end with a princess kissing a prince, but if we show *any* hints at all that a character is gay that's *perverted* and *unacceptable* for children.

Love is love. I’m not worried in any way, shape or form about my daughter seeing people, meeting people or interacting with people who are in love. Am I worried about her seeing people who hate, who destroy or attack others? Yes. We have all sorts of family and friends who are in every type of relationship and all I ever want her to see is that love and respect for each other is where it starts, the sex, colour, number of arms, eyes, legs etc is irrelevant.

This is only part of the issue. But I think what the OP is referring to is that when there ARE depictions of LGBTQ characters, people lose their minds over it. It's not just about movies and TV either, even books. Recently there was a kid's book that has been banned in some states that depicted a child animal (like an otter or something) who lived with two male parents. It didn't show them kissing or anything, just showed two male parents existing. And people went all the way out of their entire minds over it. Had one of those otters been drawn with boobies, not a peep would have been made.

I am allergic so a cat doesn't live at my home, I have tried to house one, but my allergies couldn't take it so he chose to live with my niece instead. Just a comment about the cat allergies. Many people think they're allergic to the cat's fur, but quite often its a protein in the cat's saliva that actually causes the allergic reaction. I've found that if I wipe my cats down once or twice per day with a pet wipe or even a damp paper towel, I don't experience any allergy symptoms and I get to keep my cats!

"Divorce has a lasting, negative impact on finances that, in heterosexual divorces, affects women the most. After a divorce is finalized, men hold 2.5 times the amount of wealth women do, and women's household income falls 41% (compared to men's 23%)." Do men sometimes get screwed over? Absolutely, and that's so wrong! But, usually it's the woman if there's kids involved, because we usually end up being the primary care takers, so many moms don't want to fight for the sake of the kids and just kind of give in. The reality is, is that courts are set up to screw over the parent who cares more, whether it's mom or dad, and that's just so incredibly wrong.

Don't even get me started on the child custody part. Kids could end up with an abusive mom when they have a loving dad that should've gotten custody, and every year, there are so many dads that commit suicide because they never get to see their kids again. This blatant sexism in the system has got to stop.

My husband's ex would pick up and move, like, yearly. Just to make it more difficult for him to see his kids. Luckily his company was pretty hip to her bullsh*t and would just relocate him nearer to them. She was already getting almost 50% of his income, she just wanted to make him suffer because he refused to take her back after she cheated on him (and gave him chalymidia), but the divorce was ALL on him. Riiiight.

The mere accusation of being a sexual predator will destroy any man, even if it's bogus and has no proof, but a man has a really hard time to be taken seriously if he's the victim of a woman. That's definitely true. My husband's cousin accused a guy who wouldn't date her of SA her. It was absolute bogus. They've never been alone in the same room. The times she claimed he SAd her he couldn't have done it. One time he was in the hospital, the other time he was at work. Her own family told the district attorney how she'd gleefully admitted she'd lied and the case was dropped after she simply didn't appear at the court date. She was put in prison for false claims and missing the summon. Still he was fired and had to move because people gave him the side eye. I heard people saying that they believed he'd chosen her because of her bad reputation so no one would believe her. I myself herd her boasting how she'd get him arrested. I'm 100% sure she lied. Still, he got shunned.

YES!!!! Rich people asking for handouts is totally acceptable and seen as good business practices. Poor people asking for handouts are seen as lazy and just wanting drug/alcohol money. Also being poor in general is just vilified while being rich is seen as being saintly almost. Like you have to be a good person to be rich and if you're poor you're a terrible person. It makes me so mad!

I think this is perpetuated by the media. When was the last time you saw a character with bipolar disorder living a normal life with a job and family instead of being a psychopath or murderer? Or someone with schizophrenia whose symptoms are managed with medication and only see what's actually there? Movies and TV shows do almost nothing to promote understanding and acceptance of severe mental illness.

As the mother of a child with severe bipolar disorder I agree. In addition, I am terrified for what will happen after I die.. he cannot take care of himself. I am in the US and visualize him getting shot in the street if he goes off his meds.. I am considering going back to NL just for his sake.

What's this mean? That people *do* care about mental health, except for "icky" cases? Or that they *don't* generally care? I'd guess that the vast majority of people have no idea what schizophrenia is, or think that narcissism is just a bad case of the vanities.

I think it's more like people will be sympathetic towards things like a mild anxiety disorder, or depression, but if your mental condition means you hallucinate or can't empathize with other people, then there's something severely wrong with you.

My stepdaughter is schizoaffective. She scares me. I am a RN and deal with a few mental health issues myself. I truly feel so much sorrow and sympathy for her, but she refuses to stay on her meds. She’s in her 20s now and has been institutionalized for at least 5 years because she is absolutely a danger to herself and everyone. We tried for years to help her, but she wouldn’t help herself. Her lies became dangerous (she accused her dad of only wanting her around so he could have sex with her (that is absolutely NOT the truth) and we feared her being around our young son for very good reasons. Many mental illnesses suck, but aren’t scary. Hers is scary and it has nothing to do with the media.

I can talk about having ADHD, (though lots of people believe it doesn't exist or can't exist in adult women) and most people are sympathetic. I can't tell almost anyone my other diagnosis is bipolar disorder. It's managed with medication and therapy and I haven't had an episode in a decade, but if I mention it at all I lose jobs and friends

Depends where you work. I teach at a community college. In years past, I might have been expected to wear a suit day in and day out (and here it can easily hit the 100s in the first and last few weeks of the school year). But now, I don't even own a suit, and I'm damn sure going to wear shorts and short-sleeved shirt when it's hot. (I will compromise by wearing a shirt with buttons, but usually with a floral print.)

And women cannot step out shirtless in her front yard and not show up for work braless either. Compare wearing a bra to wearing a jock strap with a cup for most of the day. Talking about work, I am glad to see that apparently dress codes for women have eased up a bit and that a lot of positions no longer require that you wear nylons... in California. I have not worn nylons since I stopped working.

One time a Man unfamiliar with our facility accidentally used the Boy’s locker room (instead of the Mens) to change before working out (middle of the day, no kids around because they’re in school) and everybody freaked the f**k out. (I 100% know it was an honest mistake. The guy was so embarrassed because of how the staff reacted.) While on the other hand - adult Women routinely used the Girls locker room because ‘it’s too crowded’ (or whatever the excuse, etc). This was allowed by management for a looong time. Finally got that policy enforced equally when I confronted it after we all had the implicit bias training… Edit- probably file this under r/unpopularopinion, but someone asked - and it is what it is To be clear, the policy was ‘Only adults accompanying young children that need assistance are allowed in the Youth locker rooms’

Any sports or concert events where the woman's room line is a mile long, women can use the stalls in the men's room and no one cares. If a guy went into a woman's room, he'd come out with a high heel in his a*s!

The actual discimination here is that the women's toilets are often inadequate. Men have cubicals plus urinals (which take up less space than cubicals) but women only have cubicals, so women often have fewer facilities. Also, women need longer in the toilet (more clothes to take off, might need to change a pad or tampon). And more people use the women's toilets because women are more likely than men to take children (boys and girls) to the toilet.

The only ones that blind you are illegally-fitted aftermarket ones. (And it's the HiD ones, not Halogen). Factory fittings require that ultra-bright lights automatically level themselves so do not blind other road users.

Is there no techinical inspection of cars in the US? over here, once yuor car turns 4 yo, there's a bi-yearly (and later on even yearly) obligatory inspection of the technical aspects of your car, related to safety and pollution standards. One of the checks is the way your headlights are set up not to shine to high up, thus not blinding.

In most states, maybe all, we have annual inspections on the car. Some states, but not all, require extra tests on emissions. You have to provide proof of insurance. Insurance isn't cheap, some people can't afford to insure their car and drive anyway. As a country we have Federal rules. We have 50 states with different state laws. Louisiana is the only state governed by Civil Law

If you got large numbers of people killed within the last 300 to 500 years, you're a war criminal. If you did the same thing at an earlier point in time, you're a great statesman. Think Julius Caesar or Genghis Khan.

... also applies to the cold war. Capitalism isn't the best - for that matter, winning here doesn't even imply it's better or less evil than soviet-communism was - system there is. It seem that it has had periods that were less evil, less brutal, than soviet-communism, but all that is proven is that it, under the given circumstances, collapses slower. Everything else is, at least, not answered by who won.

All you're seeing is tht horrendous as it was it was not universally condemned in the same way it would be nowadays, largely because there wasn't anyone to do the condemning. Same was true in many ways about the Holocaust (initially, at least, when it was just thought of as 'resettlement') which is why the UN and other international bodies were set up.

EHHH.. it just has to do with knowledge, life experience, etc- but hey, I am just an old mom who told her son "get off the phone and unplug your PC NOW " when he gave a scammer remote access.. what can I say. I believe that anyone can get scammed, and even super informed people can be caught off guard. I myself fell for " Firefox needs to finish the update" on a day that Mozilla rolled out a widely publicized update and while clicking on a link provided BY google in Google News (not just any link from a search). Turned out a perfectly legit site was compromised. I have seen young people go for scams as often as older ones or click on viruses- I used to clean out infected computers during the days that antivirus programs would not necessarily remove them and you had to remove them manually. Best advice I can give: stay informed and updated.
