It’s easy to make fun of the Brits. I should know, I’m one myself! However, the whole ‘bad teeth’ thing that Americans seem to cling to is a little outdated by now, we got that sorted a while back and quite regularly go to the dentist now. Well most of us, anyway.
So why not have a dig at the fact that we invented a whole host of sports, which we now suck at? Or the brand-new super expensive aircraft carrier we got, which has no aircraft and already sprung a leak? And what about this guy, who represents us to the world as our Foreign Secretary? The list is practically endless. Luckily, most of us have a pretty deprecating sense of humour and are quite happy to chuckle along too, so by all means, give us your best shot.
Now, if you must, you can add general hysteria and losing-of-shit over a little bit of bad weather to the list. Egged-on by a ridiculously sensationalist tabloid press, Brits have been portrayed as a bunch of hopeless ninnies who are incapable of functioning as a society as soon as but a single snowflake falls from the sky. And sadly, it’s all true.
Naturally, people from countries like Canada, Switzerland, Norway and Russia, places where it gets like, actually cold, can only look on with incredulous pity at us whiny Brits, and wonder what the heck all the fuss is about. Those guys get it soo much worse than us, but life seems to go on just fine. What is our problem? Well, you see old chap, we just always seem to get the wrong type of snow. Just unlucky I guess!

Erm... I live in finland, -28C today. Saw sun! I can tell you we have no sun in winter, so seeing the sun today was awesome. And it's pretty cold and snowyou butility it wasn't that bad

I'm short, that's like nearly up to my tits! *Never mind the cities, I'm stuck in a rural hospital and live in the valleys so currently screwed anyway. They have no chips in the canteen! Whole countries gone mental over the snow we had recently, seriously come on guys what’s the problem? We all know the uk goverment cannot be bothered to managed our little dusting properly. That’s why the farmers are out 24hours getting idiots out of trouble! No wonder we are the laughing stock of the planet! Ffs

These aren't really fair reactions to us Brits for the following reasons: 1) Most people in Britain are just getting on with it 2) We're the land of the ever changing weather, we're pretty good with having sun/rain/wind/hail/thunder/snow etc on the same day 3) Some people have died due this weather or been trapped on the motorway for 20 odd hours so obviously it's more than just a bit of snow 4) We only really get this level of snow for a few days every 6 or 7 years, so therefore there is no need for us to invest in the infrastructure needed to clear it all as they do in Canada/Scandinavia/Russia etc. We'd rather just be inconvenienced for a little while every few years.

First off, I hate the phrase, "The internet can't stop laughing". People and hyenas laugh, not the internet. Secondly, whatever weather you're not used to can seem extreme. I'm betting that the folks in Finland would think they were dying if the temp hit 90 F. Whatever weather conditions are not normal for an area are extreme to people who live there.

Actually, I've lived in Britain and did not see any of this panicking stuff... just regular folk dressing up for cold weather... but i DID SEE PANICK in DC for a number of years when an inch of snow fell, like, everthing was closed, even schools!!!

They are not set up for the snow, I bet they have one snow plow not to mention no snow tires. I t would be a mess where I live, Northern Canada, without those.

I'm in Ireland and yea there was a bit of an over reaction about the bread selling out but at least we can laugh at ourselves about that. The thing is Canadians and other countries like that have always lived in those conditions, you are well used to it, you have infrastructure to deal with it, you have figured it out by now. The last time this has happened in Ireland was 1982 so yea laugh it up but our country is the way it is because we have it set up for the weather we do get not the freak storms that come every 30 years...

Meanwhile, in Southern California we got sleet a couple days ago in some counties for about an hour (which quickly melted as soon as it stopped because, california). Our thoughts and prayers are with the Brits during this time of great struggle.

Ok, as a Brit, can I just quickly point out that a) Norway, Finland and Sweden are countries who have this every year, and have government spending for this stuff, whereas Britain gets this once every half decade, and it would cost way more to be permanently prepared for this than to just have five days of chaos, b) most people are really just getting on with things, it's just travel that's been affected and c) there are people who have been trapped unable to see out of their cars for two days might somewhat disagree

Well, I live in a city near Barcelona and on Wednesday we got about one inch of snow and several schools closed, people called my workplace to see if we were open... By noon all the snow had melted and it was just raining. Sure, where I live we only get snow about one day every two years, but it was still a massive overraction.

The main problem of Britain and snow is nobody cleans the roads because they have no ploughs and the cars have no winter tyres. Put those two together and it's a nightmare. I've grown up in a country where we had 30-40 cm of snow easy and we never had issues because our transportation was prepared.

The snow was much more than some of these indicate. Blizzard like conditions were prevalent over wide vast areas so those making fun of don't know what the hell they're talking about.

I can't believe I'm going to actually admit this but in the United States, the South acts this way as well. Atlanta, GA interstate was shut down and people stranded for over 24 hours for. 5 inches of snow/ice mix.

I live in the north west of England and rural. We've had no problems with panic buying but have been snowed in for 2 days. There's still about 8ft of snow at the side of the road on the lane I live on. We really don't have the equipment to deal with it. Also we've not just been hit with the beast from the east but storm Emma too. We've also had a lot of trees up rooted. Cars are still stuck under deep snow or/branches. Don't think we'll know the true damaged until the snow is all gone. People who live in cities have no idea.

Chicagoans understand Every year when the first snow hits, no matter how little, everyone forgets how to drive in snow. Fortunately, by the second snow they’ve got it but meanwhile we’re a bunch of driving dummies.🤭😁😂

LOL this makes my day but I hope y'all alright. Even in my country (which has tropical climate) we experienced hailstorm and ice literally fell from the sky last year. So yeah, the weather is crazy nowadays

You have us in Ohio 60 degree weather shorts and short sleeves no coat next day is 25 degrees and all we're wearing is a sweatshirt and some of us jeans, others still short lol and it's snowing

Sadly the north of Britain where we tend to just get on with it gets lumped in with the south panicking over a bit of snow. That said theres less snow and snows less regularly than it uses to and unfortunately local and national government are idiots.

Being a Scottish person in England is amusing. It wasn't even a week of decent snow. I grew up in Shetland near Norway when I was young. They were decent winter, weather now is pish !

Let's be honest. This type of weather is a pest for the elderly, the handicapped, and every public service such as police, ambulances and public transport. Especially the combination with the storm and thaw made it hard on many people. But nowadays we live in a society where leaders dictate that every life is "makeable", and the weather just isn't. Whatever fun you make of it, this was a particularly nasty weather period for many.

C**p article, 10 people died so far, most of just us get on with it and some us have no real choice but to drive in it. 10 ft drifts near me, snow plough stuck, lots of villages snowed in. Most of the main roads get cleared but nothing else. Most people don't have big 4 wheel drive cars, too expensive and most winters aren't this bad. I think we manage well considering.

I recall snow in March from a 1978 sojourn in Oxford. Two days later some still lay on the Cotswolds. Never noticed any panic.

I encountered one clueless person. Their post was "It's March. How can we have a snowstorm on the first day of spring" . Yes, this person thinks the seasons began on the first of the month. I pointed out that spring doesn't start for another 3 weeks. That didn't go well. They also apparently think the seasons have different lengths. And insisted that winter starts November 1 and runs to the end of February. With spring being only March & April. Summer being May-August and fall only being September & October. I gave up trying to explain.

The media has talked about noting but the snow all week. For a half hour news programme the majority of it has been taken up by snow coverage. Trains were cancelled two days before the snow actually hit. The snow largely avoided where I live but I still get around if I have to. Even the army has been drafted in to help in some areas. When I was younger we didn't make as much fuss.

Last year, Singapore temperatures dropped from 31C to 21C in January, and my friends were wearing thick jackets and messaging me to say that it was "freezing". Meanwhile, there was a blizzard outside my window.

Funny, but me, for example, stranded in Ireland for 3 days due to storm Emma. Was on a way to see my husband for our honey moon. Now just sitting in a hotel room waiting for this c**p to be over so that the airport can open and I can get the heck out of here... wah!!!

As a US southerner (New Orleans), we also had a similar situation back in January when temperatures dropped below freezing and we got some sleet. The entire city basically shut down for 2-3 days. And yes, the Yankees up north were laughing at us. You Brits are not alone!

The Netherlands are terrible with snow too. Traffic-wise at least. Trains stop driving, or significantly less trains drive. People are advised to only take the car if they REALLY need to. ‘Just’ stay home from work if you can. Non necessary traffic is really advised against. But more than often people still get in the car. Resulting in huge traffic jams and more accidents. And I am like, why can’t we just react like countries where they do have a lot of snow every winter (and I mean, A LOT of snow). Aren't countries able to share tips? I mean, tips for any kind of traffic. That is where the real chaos is when we have snowfall (or when it is fall, the falling leaves even causes trouble with trains..) But I myself do not care. I do not drive a car, I can not work unfortunately. I LOVE snow. While everyone else is complaining. I’m enjoying it! It is so beautiful!

Sadly the DAILY MAIL newspaper are not helping the situation, they exaggerate a lot, it's true that other nations laugh at us and it's really justified because we can't handle snow very well.

Sacramento, CA got like an 1-3 inches of hail in an hour. We went out like typical Californians in our flip flops and tank tops and built snowmen... hailmen.

I love this because it's all true, It's not even the physical impact of the snow it's like we all just lose our minds, the person above who compared the response to the terrorist attacks to this snow storm is 100% accurate, my office is mostly empty as transport is a joke, you cannot even check the online time tables as they've not been updated to reflect the emergency time tables. Everything is bad.
