We all want to fit in, to do things right, but sometimes, it goes wrong, translations are not enough, we see that on Bored Panda all day. My experience?
One time i was in Palermo, Sicily, and i said “basta” to the waiter because i didn’t want more pasta on my plate “pasta basta”! I was red after the explanation on “basta”, for me it was “enough”, “no more” but not offensive. PLEASE SHARE so i won’t be the only person who try and finally got a free laugh with understanding people.

I learned to speak Spanish in Uruguay, but spent the last 7 months in Madrid, Spain. So when telling my colleagues at work "you gotta be kidding me" - which in Spanish from Uruguay is "Me estás jodiendo" everyone was laughing at me. So I asked what was the funny thing about that? Turns out, in Spain the verb "joder" means f***ing and I was more or less asking if they would f**k me. ... GREAT :D

In Holland we often say; Nee hoor what basically means no thank you. But when we say it in english we say; No hoor (pronounced as whore)....
