As if the prom night itself wasn't stressful enough, there are many things that girls have to figure out before attending it: makeup, hairstyle, shoes, accessories and the most important - the prom dress.
These days it is really popular to shop for this last ingredient online. You can pretty much find whatever you want, you don't need to leave your house to find it, and somebody will even deliver it to your door! Cheap shopping literally couldn't be any more convenient. Unless you decide to buy your prom dress online, that is. Because what looks good on the internet doesn't always look good in real life! Some of these unlucky prom-goers managed to save their epic fails of dresses by mending them; others opted out for Plan B - throwing the ordered dress to trash. Seems a lot of the commentary forgets that these people aren't getting what they paid for... the material itself is cheap as is the workmanship and that something that isn't portrayed in the advertisements no matter what size the model versus the size of the buyer.

Actually: they ARE getting what they pay for. The designers use fine fabric and spend a lot of time and effort to come up with magnificent designs. The girls bought dresses at prices less than wholesale of the originals: they did get what they paid for. You are fairly unwise to imagine that you will pay pennies of what the original cost and actually get something with the fit, quality materials and construction of the original gown. Sometimes the savings just isn't really a saving.

A legit dress wouldn't need a petticoat, it would have one built in. And that is not remotely the same fabric or the same shape skirt. I'm a professional seamstress and I've altered about a dozen knockoff prom dresses just this year and have worked in bridal/formalwear salons. Trust me, it does not just need ironing and a petticoat. There isn't even enough room under that skirt to put a petticoat.

A lot of these are to be expected; a cheaper quality knockoff. but aren't nearly as bad as they say it is. Some of these are completely workable but some girls don't take into account that they're pudgy with rolls and won't look like the model

The point is that the dress doesn't even look like what it was supposed to. It has nothing to do with how the girl looks. Why is everyone trying to bring the model into it? The dress is completely different than the one that she thought the ordered. End of story...

No, it looks terrible because it is a knockoff. I'm a professional seamstress. I can't tell you how many knockoff prom dresses were brought to me this year. The dress is using the wrong fabric, it is missing any sort of built-in tulle underskirt, which any legitimate dress would have. The skirt is made much more narrow than the actual dress would be. The lace is not properly sewn onto the bodice. I could go on, but all of these pictures show cheap Chinese knockoffs which have been scamming online buyers in greater and greater numbers in the past few years. It is not a matter of the girl being a bigger size, or the dress needing ironing or a crinoline. They are cheaply made knockoffs, and let me tell you, even the ones that appear to be 'not that bad' are nightmares once you get inside them and try to alter them. Cheap fabric that easily snags, nonsensical construction that makes altering almost impossible and at the very least much more time consuming than a legit dress would be.

People keep blaming these girls for being "obese". Yes some of them are on the bigger side, but these dresses are cheap. They're cheap replicas of very expensive dresses. If these girls want quality, find a seamstress who can make you something like the picture but you're still going to have to pay for it. You can't expect to get a designer dress for $30 online. If it seems too good to be true, it is.

Okay, so here is my wedding dress and the dress that I bought it based on...from China. The beading wasn't exactly the same, nor was the lace in the middle, but I adjusted it to my liking. I chose the material and color and sent them my sizes and managed to only spend around $100 on this dress, plus a few hours of time on adjustments. This was my second online purchase for a wedding dress as the first one was pretty, but not what I wanted and they refunded my money no problem. Unfortunately, I couldn't find the original site this dress came from to compare prices or anything else about it. Double check your sizes and material, check and verify online reviews, don't spend too much money that you might not get back and order far enough out that if it doesn't work you can still get something else. I would also suggest trying something on in a similar style to see if that even works with your body type. Not every dress does. 2017-05-16...7b3bee.jpg

What I don't uderstand here is the level of being naive. 1. Models are superslim and tall. THe buyers are usually obese and short. Or at least not size 34-36 and 180-190 tall. 2. Each year there are the "Remember not to buy your prom dress online" articles and women still don't learn... So first - measure your sizes for the sizes of ordered dress, second: order from a good quality store, not China for heaven's sake.... Sorry if I sound harsh, but c'mon...

If you like the dress you find on a china clothing site (or any clothing piece) simply save the pic to your computer or phone and then go to google image search. Upload the image, and you will usually find the company who is ACTUALLY selling that dress/piece of clothing. That way, you can get exactly what you want! =)

I've been working professionally in the fashion industry for over a decade. A gown with that level of complexity costs thousands of dollars, not hundreds. It's not about the label like someone commented. It's actually complex pattern making and draping, stitching skill that goes into making these gowns. You can't spend a few hundred and think that's a lot. That may be a lot of money for you or me to spend on a special occasion gown, but it doesn't change the fact that the execution is an art, and you have to pay people for their time and skills. You literally get what you pay for. Let this be a warning for Brides shopping online for their wedding gowns as well! Yes, you can complain about how expensive a gown is and say ok fine, I'll just buy it online where the same looking dress costs way less... go ahead my dear! People need to educate themselves about the clothes they put on their body. If you don't know, you can't complain. If you let yourself not be educated, this is what happens

You have made an important point. People have unrealistic expectations. I only make things for myself on a very basic level - but that already makes me aware of how much work it is, how much quality materials cost... And how one model just wont fit everyone. Even when we go buying a simple shirt, we try on a few to find a match. Now when it comes to a gown that should fit everywhere and give the look you expect... But we just want to outsmart shops... Which in this case is impossible. Even for a good price you could not expect to receive those dresses by post and just look great in them... Still, the shops are not playing it fair either...

IF you buy a dress online, look at reviews. Especially photo reviews. I bought one dress, one only, that came how it looked in the picture. Just got to do research. Lots of it.

Yes, a lot of stuff you order online can be cheap and poorly made. However, it is obvious that many of these young ladies were totally unrealistic about the styles that would be most flattering for their body types, heights, etc. Commonly, dresses for ads are modeled by a woman that is a size 0-2, and 5'9" to 5'-11" tall. If you don't fit those parameters, you need to take that into account. It's also obvious that they did not pay much attention to the fabric types or descriptions. Ladies, "sheer" means exactly what the dictionary says it means. There are wonderful online stores where you can get great bargains on formal wear, even designer styles, but every shopper needs to use some common sense.

First of all. ....how does anyone think that a $40 knock off dress to a $5000 + dress is going to look just as amazing. Second. ...all of the advertised dresses are fully body formed, fitted just for that model Third. ...even if the dress came looking identical and fitted perfectly.....it's not the companies fault you may not have the same assets as the model does or in some cases much more than the model does therfore the dress is not going to look the same on you as the model. Also there is a thing called photo editing used. And lastly......ALOT of those dresses are completely INAPPROPRIATE for a school function and anyone arriving in some of those dresses should be turned away and told come back when you have some material covering your body in the right places

I think that the big problem is not the quality of the fabric and the dress' sewing patterns but the unrealistic expectactions about one's body. I mean looking at a dress shown by a model that usually has 180 cm/5'9', 55 kilos/120 lbs and bust/waist/hip ratio accepted as fashion standard and expecting that the dress will look the same on a person that hasn't a model's body seems a bit naive ...Of course, the girls are young and not to blame, but the whole article shows for me that our culture is so concerned in trying to reach a certain beauty standard rather than knowing one's own body, loving it as it is and flattering it. I think most of the girls chose dresses that were not tailored for their bodies. We are not all built the the same (thankfully) and we cannot look the same in the same clothes. An why should we be?

You clearly have never bought a dress from one of these crappy companies that FALSELY ADVERTISE. Rosewe, Zaful, Dresslily, etc ADVERTISE beautiful clothing. But what comes is often times a totally different material than the one in the photo, for example, sheer instead of opaque, poorly hemmed with slapdash 'work,' embroidery is not as advertised, material quality is incredibly cheap and tacky, looks NOTHING like what is advertised. This is not about size. Yes, most women in China are MUCH smaller than most women in the USA or the West in general. From height to weight to shoe size, Chinese tend to be petite. That's not the problem here. The problem is clear in the photographs. The green dress in #8 is TOTALLY different from the advertised style. An off-the shoulder dress now has lace up to the neck? HORRIBLE FALSE ADVERTISING. China is making a killing off of their Sweat Shop workers who are clearly untrained in seamstress work, are paid by the dress so the have to slap dash dozens...

#1 You don't have the same body type as the model. #2 The dress is tailored to fit the model like a glove. Tailoring will make the dress fit you better as we all are shaped differently. #3 The picture is od designer dress and younare ordering a cheap knockoff from China. I'm disappointed by how mean many of the comments in this post are toward the *girls* who bought the dresses. They're close to adulthood, true, but they're still kids making the kinds of decisions kids do. And those dresses are pretty much made like a Halloween costume in terms of fabric and skill, they got scammed.

Why do any of these girls or women believe they are going to get a high quality professionally tailored to fit perfectly garment from a company half way across the world, who have never heard of trading standard and whose size options are S/M/L/XL all for approximately £200? Especially when you can image search the same dress and see professional retailers selling it for around 2k. You know you're getting a fake, a cheap fake at that, why on earth would you expect it to be even halfway near as good as the original?

I hv been buying dresses online frm China for like million of times. I m always satisfied with the items I rcvd. Bcoz I know what size n measurements suits me. Then I read d details ie type of material, whether it is stretchable or not etc. D photo of d model posing with d dress is jst an illustration. Then if d price is cheap, don't put a high hope on it. Most of these are jst of d wrong sizes kids!

not only should you not buy a cheap china made dress, (sizes hardly ever match our American sizes, anyway), but please, look at your body type! a lot of them are looking at a dress with a size 0 or so model in it. i'm not 'fat shaming' anyone, these gals are not 'obese', just the wrong body type for the dress they want.

Yes a lot of these dresses are cheep copies but if you are a size 6 or 8 it won't look the same as someone that wears a 0 or a 2. The pictures they order from are tailored for that person and are pressed. You have to admit if some of these dresses were pressed and taken in here and there they would be really nice, you can't expect something to look runway ready after being shipped from China or anywhere else for that matter. Items need to be tweaked to each person's liking.

A lot of these look like cheap trash bags, and some are like, I don't know, 20 bucks for a dress? But in many cases, it looks like the model of the dress is not a good fit for the body shape. Some look like they could use a bit of tailoring to be a good fit.

#41 wasn't that bad. It was actually a nice dress. Just needed pressing or steaming to get the wrinkles out. Most of these dresses are bad but some just didn't fit because the person ordering the dress simply doesn't have a body like the model in the pics has. It's a reality check for sure for most young women. We all want to look like the girl in the picture, but we rarely do. And no matter what, until we actually try on the dress, we will never know if that style looks good on us or not. Much better off all around to either have someone custom make your dress to fit you locally, or to just go dress shopping at the nearest bridal store or prom dress store. Just watch the want adds, there are always girls looking to sell last years dress or like in my daughters circumstance, have multiple dresses to choose from because of competitions in Junior miss or other beauty queen type competitions. We got lucky and I paid a fraction of the price because the dress was only worn once.

29 and 32 are actually pretty close to the original, lol. I don't know what 29 was expecting, the model in the example pic is clearly wearing nude underwear and bra. It's all lace on mesh, of course it's gonna show your bits.

Well, to save a buck and for convenience you go online. One by one the stores start shutting down, then the malls close pretty soon all you will be able to buy will be online. Time perhaps to re-introduce sewing in the schools for boys and girls. Otherwise, everyone will look like a sack of potatoes.

Don't buy clothes from China. They advertise BEAUTIFUL dresses on gorgeous models. When the dresses actually arrive, (OFTEN TIMES MONTHS later, 'Slow Boat FROM China is not just an expression anymore!) they are poorly made, slapped together with bad seams and do not meet sizing (an extra small dress that would be a US Size Zero just has an XL label hastily stitched in) and are of subpar material. Literally the cheapest and ugliest materials found in China. Infuriating. The Federal Trade Commission needs to PROTECT buyers in the US from Chinese False Advertising!

This just shows the difference between 2004 Internet and now. I bought my dress online, have no clue if it was from china, but it was $99 and I LOVED IT! It looked exactly like the photo. It was a simple dress, but super beautiful, age appropriate/prom appropriate. I guess I lucked out.

Just another "Woman's Job" - Dressmaking - that has become so devalued that people think they can get a Prom or Wedding-worthy dress online, from China, for a couple hundred bucks. These are probably the same people who buy their everyday clothes from Walmart. You get what you pay for, people! And let's not ever forget that countries that export this junk are making them with human "slave" labor, often children, who get paid next to nothing and in abominable conditions.

Oh dear. Here's what I would do if I were young and lovely and shopping for a prom dress: buy vintage on eBay. Look for something from a seller with a good rep, that's photographed from all angles, and has all the measurements in the description- bust, waist, hips, length.

A lot of these dresses could have been worn with a little thing called FITTING. A seamstress can do that for you... If you order something online, don't think it will look on you like it does on the model, people have different shapes even if the size is the same.

Aside from the poor quality of most of these knock off chinese dresses, the other problem I'm seeing is that these young girls are looking at the dress on a model and for some reason thinking that the dress will magically transform their own height, shape & size to look like the model in the image. (who no doubt actually has pins pulling the dress in to make it look a better fit, & is probably airbrushed in the image also). They just need to choose a design that compliments their own figure rather than the figure of the model. Also of course, go to a decent dress shop and try one on first!

However, if you order one from a website for a fraction of the cost and expect to receive something that looks like it was shipped straight from the runway then this is what you'll get. This has to do more with the lack of good judgement on their part than their size. 😂😂😂

People keep blaming these girls for being "obese". Yes some of them are on the bigger side, but these dresses are cheap. They're cheap replicas of very expensive dresses. If these girls want quality, find a seamstress who can make you something like the picture but you're still going to have to pay for it. You can't expect to get a designer dress for $30 online. If it seems too good to be true, it is.

Okay, so here is my wedding dress and the dress that I bought it based on...from China. The beading wasn't exactly the same, nor was the lace in the middle, but I adjusted it to my liking. I chose the material and color and sent them my sizes and managed to only spend around $100 on this dress, plus a few hours of time on adjustments. This was my second online purchase for a wedding dress as the first one was pretty, but not what I wanted and they refunded my money no problem. Unfortunately, I couldn't find the original site this dress came from to compare prices or anything else about it. Double check your sizes and material, check and verify online reviews, don't spend too much money that you might not get back and order far enough out that if it doesn't work you can still get something else. What I don't uderstand here is the level of being naive. 1. Models are superslim and tall. THe buyers are usually obese and short. Or at least not size 34-36 and 180-190 tall. 2. Each year there are the "Remember not to buy your prom dress online" articles and women still don't learn... So first - measure your sizes for the sizes of ordered dress, second: order from a good quality store, not China for heaven's sake.... Sorry if I sound harsh, but c'mon...

If you like the dress you find on a china clothing site (or any clothing piece) simply save the pic to your computer or phone and then go to google image search. Upload the image, and you will usually find the company who is ACTUALLY selling that dress/piece of clothing. That way, you can get exactly what you want! =)

I've been working professionally in the fashion industry for over a decade. A gown with that level of complexity costs thousands of dollars, not hundreds. It's not about the label like someone commented. It's actually complex pattern making and draping, stitching skill that goes into making these gowns. You can't spend a few hundred and think that's a lot. That may be a lot of money for you or me to spend on a special occasion gown, but it doesn't change the fact that the execution is an art, and you have to pay people for their time and skills. You literally get what you pay for. Let this be a warning for Brides shopping online for their wedding gowns as well! Yes, you can complain about how expensive a gown is and say ok fine, I'll just buy it online where the same looking dress costs way less... go ahead my dear! People need to educate themselves about the clothes they put on their body. If you don't know, you can't complain. If you let yourself not be educated, this is what happens

You have made an important point. People have unrealistic expectations. I only make things for myself on a very basic level - but that already makes me aware of how much work it is, how much quality materials cost... And how one model just wont fit everyone. Even when we go buying a simple shirt, we try on a few to find a match. Now when it comes to a gown that should fit everywhere and give the look you expect... But we just want to outsmart shops... Which in this case is impossible. Even for a good price you could not expect to receive those dresses by post and just look great in them... Still, the shops are not playing it fair either...

Yes, a lot of stuff you order online can be cheap and poorly made. However, it is obvious that many of these young ladies were totally unrealistic about the styles that would be most flattering for their body types, heights, etc. Commonly, dresses for ads are modeled by a woman that is a size 0-2, and 5'9" to 5'-11" tall. If you don't fit those parameters, you need to take that into account. It's also obvious that they did not pay much attention to the fabric types or descriptions. Ladies, "sheer" means exactly what the dictionary says it means. There are wonderful online stores where you can get great bargains on formal wear, even designer styles, but every shopper needs to use some common sense.

First of all. ....how does anyone think that a $40 knock off dress to a $5000 + dress is going to look just as amazing. Second. ...all of the advertised dresses are fully body formed, fitted just for that model Third. ...even if the dress came looking identical and fitted perfectly.....it's not the companies fault you may not have the same assets as the model does or in some cases much more than the model does therfore the dress is not going to look the same on you as the model. Also there is a thing called photo editing used. And lastly......ALOT of those dresses are completely INAPPROPRIATE for a school function and anyone arriving in some of those dresses should be turned away and told come back when you have some material covering your body in the right places

I think that the big problem is not the quality of the fabric and the dress' sewing patterns but the unrealistic expectactions about one's body. I mean looking at a dress shown by a model that usually has 180 cm/5'9', 55 kilos/120 lbs and bust/waist/hip ratio accepted as fashion standard and expecting that the dress will look the same on a person that hasn't a model's body seems a bit naive ...Of course, the girls are young and not to blame, but the whole article shows for me that our culture is so concerned in trying to reach a certain beauty standard rather than knowing one's own body, loving it as it is and flattering it. I think most of the girls chose dresses that were not tailored for their bodies. We are not all built the the same (thankfully) and we cannot look the same in the same clothes. An why should we be?

You clearly have never bought a dress from one of these crappy companies that FALSELY ADVERTISE. Rosewe, Zaful, Dresslily, etc ADVERTISE beautiful clothing. But what comes is often times a totally different material than the one in the photo, for example, sheer instead of opaque, poorly hemmed with slapdash 'work,' embroidery is not as advertised, material quality is incredibly cheap and tacky, looks NOTHING like what is advertised. This is not about size. Yes, most women in China are MUCH smaller than most women in the USA or the West in general. From height to weight to shoe size, Chinese tend to be petite. That's not the problem here. The problem is clear in the photographs. The green dress in #8 is TOTALLY different from the advertised style. An off-the shoulder dress now has lace up to the neck? HORRIBLE FALSE ADVERTISING. China is making a killing off of their Sweat Shop workers who are clearly untrained in seamstress work, are paid by the dress so the have to slap dash dozens...

#1 You don't have the same body type as the model. #2 The dress is tailored to fit the model like a glove. Tailoring will make the dress fit you better as we all are shaped differently. #3 The picture is od designer dress and younare ordering a cheap knockoff from China. I'm disappointed by how mean many of the comments in this post are toward the *girls* who bought the dresses. They're close to adulthood, true, but they're still kids making the kinds of decisions kids do. Why do any of these girls or women believe they are going to get a high quality professionally tailored to fit perfectly garment from a company half way across the world, who have never heard of trading standard and whose size options are S/M/L/XL all for approximately £200? Especially when you can image search the same dress and see professional retailers selling it for around 2k. You know you're getting a fake, a cheap fake at that, why on earth would you expect it to be even halfway near as good as the original?

I hv been buying dresses online frm China for like million of times. I m always satisfied with the items I rcvd. Bcoz I know what size n measurements suits me. Then I read d details ie type of material, whether it is stretchable or not etc. D photo of d model posing with d dress is jst an illustration. Then if d price is cheap, don't put a high hope on it. Most of these are jst of d wrong sizes kids!

not only should you not buy a cheap china made dress, (sizes hardly ever match our American sizes, anyway), but please, look at your body type! a lot of them are looking at a dress with a size 0 or so model in it. i'm not 'fat shaming' anyone, these gals are not 'obese', just the wrong body type for the dress they want.

Yes a lot of these dresses are cheep copies but if you are a size 6 or 8 it won't look the same as someone that wears a 0 or a 2. The pictures they order from are tailored for that person and are pressed. You have to admit if some of these dresses were pressed and taken in here and there they would be really nice, you can't expect something to look runway ready after being shipped from China or anywhere else for that matter. Items need to be tweaked to each person's liking.

#41 wasn't that bad. It was actually a nice dress. Just needed pressing or steaming to get the wrinkles out. Most of these dresses are bad but some just didn't fit because the person ordering the dress simply doesn't have a body like the model in the pics has. It's a reality check for sure for most young women. We all want to look like the girl in the picture, but we rarely do. And no matter what, until we actually try on the dress, we will never know if that style looks good on us or not. Much better off all around to either have someone custom make your dress to fit you locally, or to just go dress shopping at the nearest bridal store or prom dress store. Just watch the want adds, there are always girls looking to sell last years dress or like in my daughters circumstance, have multiple dresses to choose from because of competitions in Junior miss or other beauty queen type competitions. We got lucky and I paid a fraction of the price because the dress was only worn once.

Well, to save a buck and for convenience you go online. One by one the stores start shutting down, then the malls close pretty soon all you will be able to buy will be online. Don't buy clothes from China. They advertise BEAUTIFUL dresses on gorgeous models. When the dresses actually arrive, (OFTEN TIMES MONTHS later, 'Slow Boat FROM China is not just an expression anymore!) they are poorly made, slapped together with bad seams and do not meet sizing (an extra small dress that would be a US Size Zero just has an XL label hastily stitched in) and are of subpar material. Literally the cheapest and ugliest materials found in China. Infuriating. The Federal Trade Commission needs to PROTECT buyers in the US from Chinese False Advertising!

These are probably the same people who buy their everyday clothes from Walmart. You get what you pay for, people! Here is an idea: do not dress like a prostitute at a school function! Red carpet-worthy is usually in appropriate when you're that age. Your math teacher should not know if you have a Brazilian and nipple rings.

It doesn't matter what size you are, you can have a beautiful, high quality dress. However, if you order one from a website for a fraction of the cost and expect to receive something that looks like it was shipped straight from the runway then this is what you'll get. This has to do more with the lack of good judgement on their part than their size. 😂😂😂
