Long before Xbox, Playstation and online multiplayer, in the early ’80s, video games were as much a social activity as entertainment. Arcades served as recreation centers for a whole generation of kids and teenagers, gathering in black, blinding, carpeted rooms with their pockets stuffed with quarters, co-operating or competing in video games and drinking sodas.
Being a retro gamer myself, I couldn’t resist the opportunity to relive that era, by visiting a pinball themed bar with shuffleboard tables, classic video games and microbrews on tap, one Friday night in the city center of Oslo, Norway. The place is full of original Jamma-style cabinets of the ’80s including Ms Pac-man, Donkey Kong and Space Invaders, pinball machines, as well as classic video games of the ’90s, such as Street Fighter II and Point Blanc. Nostalgia was high. It is always a great pleasure to see people socialising and having fun among all these treasures of the past.
