On the 26th of November, the World Health Organization (WHO) classified a new variant of SARS-CoV-2 named Omicron. It was first discovered in southern Africa and was labeled as highly transmissible. Though there’s not much knowledge about the actual risks and effects of the new strain, it’s considered to be the next big thing in the COVID-19 pandemic story.
Yet again, this has left the world in shock and some countries have already started tightening travel rules with a few already announcing lockdowns. However, even in the most difficult situations, people still find a way to carry on laughing. A new wave of Omicron variant memes has taken over social media in order to ease up the anxiety with a light dose of humor.

Of all the STUPID conspiracy theories (and dear god there are so many), the ones based on rearranged letters, and meanings of numbers, are the absolute stupidest. It requires us to believe that JUST BECAUSE, plotting overlords decide to leave little breadcrumb clues in things, taking extra time and effort for literally no reason. Believing conspiracy theories requires people to ignore how humans actually behave.

While this new Omicron threat opens up the mental trauma we only started to let go of with the help of vaccination, internauts decided to deal with it straight away. And the method they chose is definitely closest to our hearts—by creating countless hilarious memes and jokes in reaction to it. This time, mainly about the fact that many of us already have big plans for the future and the fear that we might need to cancel them once again.

If only Covid had been strong enough, even with stupidity on its side, to take out 97% of the human population....We could have had a complete reset of humanity to a population of circa 800 AD (approximately 250,000,000 world wide) in which Earth and humanity could have had a second chance. As it is now we've got nothing more than the continuation of the Internet of Stupidity and the ramifications which will come from it for the next 50-100 years. As much as it seems to be and sounds like conspiracy bullshite, the movies Idiocracy and WALL-E show very well how humans will end up. Look at what is accepted now. Simple extrapolation easily gets you to the outcome of the representations in both movies. Humanity needs, desperately, a reset to a time in which people HAD to spend more its collective time actually staying alive. Afterall...the fact that Bruce became Caitlyn has absolutely no bearing on the survival of human kind.
There’s plenty of short-term benefits: a good laugh can enhance your intake of oxygen-rich air, stimulate your heart and other vital organs. It also activates and then cools down your stress response which leaves you feeling relaxed. Lastly, "Laughter can also stimulate circulation and aid muscle relaxation, both of which can help reduce some of the physical symptoms of stress."
Thinking about long-term effects, laughter is known for strengthening your immune system. Plus, it’s a great way to relieve pain, since it makes the body produce natural painkillers. It's always been a mistake to frame the virus around one's personal risk of death. Yes, it's relatively low for most of us. Not the point. The major risk is to our healthcare systems; in the US, more than 25% of healthcare workers have left the profession. Many of those are the older ones close to retirement anyway; they had the most experience. That makes everything more dangerous, from getting a timely cancer diagnosis to being saved if you come in with cardiac arrest or a gunshot wound or from falling off a ladder. EVERYTHING about this virus should be talked about in terms of the damage to our community, which is profound.

Tbh I think we've got to stop with the whole "Wuhan lab" thing. There's no proof that it came from a lab, and scientists have deemed the theory highly unlikely. All the continued tinfoil-hatting does is increase tensions and prevent reasonable discourse.

The omicron variant is NOT 100x more dangerous, that's just fearmongering. It may be more transmissible (similar to Delta) but it's not more deadly, according to current research. Remember, viruses want to spread and infect more host cells, not kill off their hosts. This is why concerning mutations usually involve higher transmissibility, not more deadly illness.

The same blame game pertained to the "Kent" variant - fact was U.K. has exceedingly good lab facilities for detecting variation and were simply the first ones to tag it. Personally I find the geographical names that are being attached to variants to be offensive, misleading and unfair.

No, the vaccine decreases the probablility of spreading/getting/dying by about tenfold. It's like a seatbelt. A seatbelt doesn't 100% prevent you from ever getting hurt in a car crash, but highly decreases the likelihood of getting killed/severely injured.

Xi was skipped because, surprise surprise, lots of people in Asian countries have Xi as a surname. It's a fairly common family name. It doesn't have to do with Xi Jinping, it has everything to do with the Asian people across the world who, had they named the variant Xi, would have to deal with an insane upsurge of racist and xenophobic attacks. As an Asian person, I experienced it at the start and throughout the pandemic, just because the virus happened to originate in China. It's horrible. Good on the WHO for making the choice they did.

I swear if I have to go back to virtual learning and not be able to be there this year I will probably actually die. My mental health was almost completely destroyed last time I had to, and if I do it again it will be destroyed and that would be so bad. I can't do that again.

The Covid virus will run its course. If you study every epidemic there has ever been, the susceptible always die off. Then the plague ends. The people with sturdy genes and bloodlines survive. Sorry folks, but even with new vaccines and the latest antiviral drugs, this will be the case with Covid also. Yes, take the vaccines, always a good thing. Yes, wear masks, socially distance, isolate, wash hands, and do all the other things the experts recommend. But the virus will mutate 100 times over before they develop the next version of vaccine or drug. Sorry folks, but those with a susceptible weakness in the genes somewhere will eventually die. That's how viruses work. The virus finds an exploitable weakness, and then it makes the most of it. The flu virus can be caught, exchanged, and transmitted by pigs, ducks, and humans. Whenever these are in close proximity like on a pig farm, mutations happen. It becomes much more complicated with bats thrown in the mix. Zoo veterinarians tell us that even lions can catch it. Does that mean your house cat can spread it? Count yourself lucky & blessed if you have survived this long. Before it is all over, the final count numbers of deaths and crippling cases may be several times the current count. So stay safe & well!
