Mom Celebrates Birth With A Pic Of Her Newborn’s Umbilical Cord Spelling Out ‘LOVE’
Placenta is not something you may want to look up on Google images. However, Australian photographer Emma Jean Nolan not only snapped a photo of a Maori newborn Harper with his placenta still attached, she also spelled out ‘LOVE’ with his umbilical cord.
“I aim to empower and inform women through my artwork and to show the world the beauty of life and motherhood in all its forms,” said Nolan to Bored Panda. “Birth is beautiful, raw and awe inspiring, it never loses it’s magic no matter how many you see.”
“I wanted to show what a physiological birth looks like as most people have never seen a baby still connected to their placenta,” said Nolan. “The placenta is not something that is appreciated or honored in the Western culture. It is generally discarded, ignored and considered disgusting. However without the placenta none of us would be here.”

“As a Maori baby his placenta will now be returned to the land. The word ‘whenua’ relates to the placenta and to the land. Whenua (placenta) is returned to the whenua (land) with the pito (umbilical cord) the link between the newborn and papatuanuku (mother earth).”
Thank you, Emma Jean Nolan, for talking to Bored Panda about your wonderful work!

I don't need to see somebody's hemorrhoid to know that it exists. This is just another pathetic attempt to awe people with something out of the ordinary. Why can't some memories be kept for those intended to be included. NOT EVERYTHING needs to be shared and NOT EVERYBODY cares to see what is meant as a personal experience.
No need to shout. We get your point. Personally i like the picture. U don't, so u might like to look at something else? Just swipe!
Load More Replies...I'm not grossed that the fact it's a placenta, I mean it's a part of life. But maybe it's not the kind of things you exposed for the world to see ? Someone going to his doctor should start to post his stool sample ? I understand that the purpose of that is beautiful, but...
Only 3 out of 28 reactions are positive. So, 25 of them are that far separated from the wonders of nature, that they perceive it as disgusting. As the author of this article already predicted: people from the western "civilisation" are taught to think negatively about things like these. Because, you see, it's just culture, it's the way we are taught to think. By the way: there is nothing in the picture that can call disgusting. I see not even red bloody slimy masses or things like that. No, gross and disgusting is not the picture itself, but these comments without any nuances, they are.
ya, why are there so many negative comments? i thought it is beautiful

Mom also should celebrate baby's first poop by spelling "love" with poop. That would be so cute. Awwww.
Nope. Not cute - just ridiculous. New mothers are unfortunately affected by the huge amount of hormones, so its not her fault.
Thank you for so beautiful post Julia! If it was a photo of heart or kidney everybody would be ok with it, but it is PLACENTA omg!?! Some people have twisted perception and it is sad that some people don't see story behind the photo and that is delayed cord clamping - so much better for baby's health , and yes that is worth of sharing and seeing
I love it - beautiful baby, beautiful concept! I like the story behind it, too. These kinds of posts always touch my heart. So call me a sap. :)
Thanks for posting this. It fulfills people's natural curiosity. I'm glad everybody can post whatever they want these days, and nothing about the human body remains a secret kept by doctors any longer. Everybody can choose to look at whatever they want to. Now I wish the baby didn't look as if it was photoshopped clean (they don't look like that right after birth), and the photo had the original colors, but still, that's your interpretation of stuff. Thanks for posting, again.
Actually they do my daughter did bc they clean them up after birth now they dont want the newborns to have vernex on them anywere at all i didnt even get to hold her untill she was that spotless like that baby in this picture.

The birth of the baby is lovely, but I imagine a photo of your child and their placenta hung up on a wall is something you would later regre
STOP being so prudish i think it's amazing yes they shared it with the world and why not if you don't like it then simply move on i think it's amazing and good on them.
The only people that need to see that are medical personnel and the parents. And if I was the mother, I wouldn't want to see it either. Nobody on the internet wants or needs to see that.
More of such wonderful images please!! And breastfeeding images as well! We have to normalize these things that are so natural and beautiful!
All of you complaining about realize you didn't have click on it. I'm thinking that you all did just to post your bitching. Don't like it bypass it. It's a pretty easy concept, or do you feel like your bitching is necessary?
I mean, the idea might have sounded cute and..... Interesting but then the execution wasn't really the best. Sorry
not everything with a baby is beautiful or precious. Some things related to childbirth are just gross. why didn't she include a photo of the mucus plug or the meconium as well. Not everyone's personal opinion needs to be made into a campaign of awareness for f*ing everything.
Tortora tree? You might want to look up the spelling before posting an article.
i dont mean to be rude i mean i love the pictures but maybe you could have warned us a little before putting it out there again im sorry but uhh ya im sorry
Tad late, but it literally says what’s going to happen in the title. Try reading.

I think it's gross, why anyone needs to see that I don't know.i never even saw my own babies placenta, I don't feel I missed anything.yuck.
ew. yes, i'm grossed out. please people you don't have to share EVERYTHING.
There is a reason you clamp and cut the umbilical cord before the placenta is delivered. Its for babys safety. Is a cute pic worth it?
Hahaha for babys safety, are you kidding with me?

But sharing a picture of the placenta, too? Nobody wants to see that. I gagged at this. I mean, I don't think someone is going to go to the doctor and get his gull bladder removed then snap a pic of it then share it. That's gross and unnecessary. Same with this. Not everything should be shared with others, similar to this. That's a good way to loose a couple friends. We know how a baby eats inside the womb and we DON'T need to see it.
Schmaltzy and gross at the same time. That's impressive internetness there.
