Dog Lives Under A Bed For Two Years, But Is Saved And Gets Life-Changing Makeover (7 Pics)

This is one of those stories that we love to tell. The kind that thrills us and touches our hearts making us believe that there is still a lot of kindness in the world. This is a story about an abandoned dog, who after 2 years of neglect, finally found hope. Unfortunately, there are still a lot of abused animals in the world but we are happy to see how people are willing to collaborate with this fight.

A seven-year-old animal neglect case named Lionheart was surrendered to the Richmond SPCA dog shelter back in April by his owner. The small stray dog had been living under a bed for two years completely abandoned and neglected. His body was covered in thick mats, feces, his own urine making him not able to eat, drink or walk properly. You could see the sadness and great pain that he was dealing with for a long time. According to the staff, the dog rescue was “one of the most shocking cases of neglect” they had ever encountered and Lionheart was hardly recognizable as a dog.

The animal shelter immediately reacted and took the little dog into their care. Without knowing much about his overall health and body condition, the dedicated team started shaving his matted fur and clipping his nails, to begin with. “In order to uncover the dog hidden beneath all this fur, he had to be sedated to be shaved” – tells the Richmond SPCA on their video about the first hours of his transformation. It took a few hours until the staff could see the little dog hiding under the matted fur.

“Relieved from the weight and discomfort of his matted fur, Lionheart began to show his adorable personality.” And this all thanks to the wonderful Richmond SPCA team who did not hesitate and saved Lionheart’s life!

Let’s admit that it’s clear to see that now Lionheart is filled with life, energy, and love. He looks nothing like he used to be before his doggie grooming transformation. Just look at those cute eyes filled with joy!

“We are happy to announce that Lionheart is now in a loving, lasting home. We wish him and his guardian many years of happiness.”

Here’s Richmond SPCA video about it:

I see a lot of comments here about the owner should be prosecuted. We don't know the story here. I'm a former vet tech and have seen this happen because the actual owner was honestly too old to care for themselves much less an animal properly and no one checked up on the human or the animal until it was too late.

It's possible that his first "owner" developed dementia or a serious illness and couldn't properly care for him. That's no excuse; just saying things happen. People don't set out to become animal abusers.

Aria Whitaker please calm down. There are people with no money, caretakers and they go on like this for years. Ever watch Hope for Paws videos? You will see pets abandoned that most likely were the pet of someone who died. They just get dumped. I think that person also had issues, too. Not everyone functions correctly. Not making excuses, but the more isolated people get, the more it becomes challenging to help them, and I don't mean the self absorbed kind, but people who don't see the small changes in their minds, etc. It's all very sad. I am so glad there is a happy ending. I voted you up, because I get how you feel. I've seen cases where people tie pugs up outside in 80 and 90 degree heat. I want to raze their home and catapult them to mars.

The owner should be locked in a pool of his/her p**s and feces and forced to eat dog food for the rest of his/her life

It's possible that is exactly what is going on. A lot of elderly people end up like this and their animals suffer too. They don't always have the cognitive function to ask for help or even realize they need help. And not everyone has someone to check in on them periodically.

No! No bored panda! It is too early in the morning for tears, even if they are happy tears.

What a cutie...the past "owners" should be prosecuted...that was a terrible way to treat a living being.

The owner could be living in the same conditions and has no one to care for them either, and doesn't have the wherewithal to reach out for help

Sucks that this has to happen anywhere. Even worse for me knowing it happened in my own town. :(

While it's very sad how he got to this place, I'm glad that the Richmond SPCA focused more on the outcome, rather than what lead up to his situation. And so very happy he now has a fur-ever home! <3

He had to have been named after the character from Warriors (by Erin Hunter) Lionheart. There is no way that's a coincidence. Also, that's horrible to do that to a living thing! And to have the nerve to have named it after an honorable book character!

The original lionheart was the King of England, Richard Lionheart, who also features in the Robin Hood story.

The m***********s responsible for this should be disemboweled with a plastic spoon and fed their own intestines.

Why do people get dogs in the first place if they don’t intend to take care of them? Why did this torture go on for two entire years? As a pet parent whose animals are treated as members of my family, what this poor dog endured is unconscionable. It’s a testament to Lionheart’s resilience that he can still be happy and loving. He deserves to be much loved and deliriously happy the rest of his life.

I wonder if the previous owner mis-treated his/her own children like that?
