When you zoom out and take a look at the larger picture, you can start to feel like the luckiest person on planet Earth. Well, alongside everyone else. Depending on whom you ask, the odds of you existing as, well, you are something to the tune of 1 in 400 quadrillion… or even less. But the seemingly-magical run of coincidences doesn’t necessarily end there.

The news and the internet are full to the brim with stories of amazing streaks of luck, and tales about people surviving seemingly impossible odds, and they can make almost anyone start believing that Fate and guardian angels might not sound so silly after all. The probabilities are so small that it makes the events that much more impressive to behold. (Though, at the same time, we’ve got to be aware that extremely unlikely events happen all the time.)

Scroll down for some of the most extraordinary, super rare occurrences, as shared by internet users on the popular r/nevertellmetheodds, aka the ‘Nearly Impossible Odds,’ online group. Upvote your fave pics, and tell us all about the (un)luckiest things that ever happened to you in the comments, dear Pandas. A few years ago my dog got out at a time it was cold and snowing. Looked everywhere for days. About a week after he left, I got a call from a friend I worked with, who lived in a residential neighborhood about 4 miles from my house. He said "I think your dog is in my yard!" I asked him to try to keep him there until I got there. I had been there several times but my dog had never been there. It was him, and he was in surpisingly good shape. It had snowed a few inches since he left and I don't see how even a Bloodhound could have tracked my scent even without the snow.

Redditor u/solateor, one of the moderators, told Bored Panda that the person who "keeps the place running" is u/Hats_Hats_Hats. There's obviously a lot of respect between the members of the r/nevertellmetheodds mod team, and that's awesome news for the members.

u/solateor shared with us how the online community formed. According to them, the sub started right in this thread (and here's an archived version showing all the comments, too). "The sub started when I submitted this gif to the r/combinedgifs subreddit. In the thread, a bunch of users started commenting about the chances of something like that happening, which lead to the creation of the subreddit. A few of us from the comments joined on as moderators, and it was up and running after that," they told Bored Panda that the sub was a hit right away.

The moderators are clearly fun-loving people. For instance, when r/nevertellmetheodds was nearing 100k subscribers, u/solateor made this gif right here, based on the famous Han Solo quote, from Star Wars. "The 'banned' graphic is a reference to the fact that we ban users who mention the odds," they explained why C-3PO got banned in the gif.

I was in a Denny's one night when someone cried out for help. A man sounding panicked. My husband and I ran over to find his daughter choking. He was so despretly trying to help her the poor guy picked her up and flipped her over. I (and everyone near) coxed him to set her down, and I looked at her face to asses. The sound she was making still sends a shiver down my spine. I took a breath, got behind her and just went through the steps I remember. After a few pushes the food she was choaking on popped right out. She gasped for breath and her family quickly enveloped her. My husband and I are both on the spectrum so I instantly turned around and walked away because my brain started to buzz in my skull after all that stimulation. I hope she was okay. I think she was. But it really scared me in the aftermath how no one in the resturant knew how to execute the Heimlich, or another choking rescue.

When she was little (up to ~6yrs old) flipping her over is what was taught to parents (says my dad) 20 years ago. I was 4 then and choking on a toffee. First thing my dad did, grabbed me by the ankles and putting me upside down. After a bit jiggling and shaking, the toffee fell out. So yeah, now I'm 24, still alive and happy my dad knew such stuff! But maybe nowerdays it isn't taught anymore...

Dr. Heimlich was a jerk and pushed the technique because he wanted to be famous. According to Roger White MD of the Mayo Clinic and American Heart Association (AHA), "There was never any science here. Heimlich overpowered science all along the way with his slick tactics and intimidation, and everyone, including us at the AHA, caved in." "Henry Heimlich also promoted abdominal thrusts as a treatment for drowning[6] and asthma[7] attacks. The Red Cross now contests those claims. The Heimlich Institute has stopped advocating on their website for the Heimlich maneuver to be used as a first aid measure for drowning victims. His son, Peter M. Heimlich, alleges that in August 1974 his father published the first of a series of fraudulent case reports in order to promote the use of abdominal thrusts for near-drowning rescue."

The mod shared their thoughts about probability and rare events being seen seemingly 'everywhere.' "If you look at probability though the lens of a bell curve (and it could be argued a bell curve isn't representational here, but if we were) then improbable events are the statistical outliers you see on either end of the curve with very low chances of occurring but get 'air time' and visibility because they are in fact rare," they told Bored Panda.

According to them, even if rare events appear to be seen 'everywhere,' they're really just a fraction of the total events that take place "but make it in front of users to be 'consumed' because they are, in fact, rare."

Meanwhile, another moderator, u/Hats_Hats_Hats, added that one's perspective matters a lot when thinking about probabilities and rareness.

"If you shuffle a deck of 52 playing cards, the arrangement you get is one in about 80,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000. So it's super improbable if you look at it that way. But it's also kind of trivial, which is why we would remove a post that's just 'I shuffled this deck of cards and the result I got will never, ever happen again,'" they said.

Three identical stranger s, was so sad! They experiment should never have been done, nor the triplets separated at birth. They later found out that several other sets of twins and triplets, were also separated at birth for this " experiment". The so called researchers were and are monsters! They were never punished, or censured or prevented from working again. That kind of experimentation sits right up there with Dr.Mengela , in Nazi Germany. You had to be pretty cold hearted and sociopathic to do this level of " experimenting".

"That's obviously a trivial example, but think of things like, 'Yesterday I ate one egg for breakfast, found two pennies on the floor, passed three ambulances on my way to work, got four phone calls before lunch, and got five texts during lunch. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5!' It sounds like numerology magic but really that person just ignored the nine socks in their drawer and the eleven emails they got in the afternoon because those didn't contribute to the 'miracle,'" they explained how people tend to pick and choose what information they feel is relevant or should be ignored.

"Wild coincidences are one thing. Genuinely interesting ones that aren't trivial like the deck of cards or reverse-engineered like the 1-2-3-4-5 day at work are different and special and that's why I love this subreddit," u/Hats_Hats_Hat said.

Over the past year and a half, the r/nevertellmetheodds subreddit has grown from 1.7 million members to a whopping 2.1 million loyal fans. The online group is home to folks who document “nearly impossible feats of achievement” and celebrate the incredible odds of doing something that requires either massive luck or huge perseverance.

Naturally, everyone on the sub is expected to be nice and polite to one another, and bullying or harassment of any kind is not tolerated. However, something else that new members should keep in mind relates directly to the type of content shared on the subreddit. Submissions have to be about nearly impossible feats, and posts that are about deliberate tricks and stunts (i.e. requiring skill and persistence), aren’t allowed. What’s more, you shouldn’t mention the odds of something happening neither in the title of the post, nor in the comments.

Friends of ours went camping when a tornado hit the campground. They instinctively got inside their Hyundai and laid down across the seat. A tree fell on their car pinning them inside. They were rescued by other campers (one with a chainsaw) and found out their tents were gone and destroyed. The car saved their lives.

.... maybe that's a stupid question, but.... tornados are powerful, yes? They can rip up roofs and whole houses, if they are build out of wood...... so.... isn't it common sense not to stay in a measly little tent during a tornado? And a car isn't very safe either, is it? I think they got lucky it was pinned down by a tree. Just wondering

Dan, the founder of ModernX, stressed to Bored Panda that success isn’t a straight line. “You will experience detours and encounter obstacles, including failed attempts, on the way to true success,” he said.

“You just have to keep going and not give up. Winners don’t give up. When you win, you reach a new level that is beyond where the majority of people will ever get to. It’s an enjoyable feeling to be a winner,” he was candid that victory really does feel sweet. It’s even better when it’s the reward for your own effort and perseverance, not just due to random chance.

According to Dan, resilience is “essential,” however, it isn’t enough by itself alone. “You also need to have the right knowledge to succeed. If you keep failing, it may be because you're unaware of certain things that are needed to succeed in that particular area,” he shared.

“So, you may need to go back to the basics and relearn them, or learn new, advanced techniques that will allow you to succeed the next time you try. To be a true winner, you should always aim to learn more about your craft,” he told Bored Panda.

I worked with him once on a short film..what a lovely human he is. I told him that his mom's autobiography helped me get my mom properly diagnosed with bipolar disorder and it changed our lives. He said "Oh my god!! We have to call her and tell her!! SHe'd love that!!" My jaw hit the floor when he did just that!! I'm so glad I got to thank her.

In Dan’s opinion, the old adage that knowledge is power isn’t completely true. He thinks there’s a twist to it, in real-life. “Knowledge isn't power on its own. Knowledge is power when used. Get the knowledge you need to succeed, use it and you will then enjoy the power that comes with it,” he said.

The fitness expert also shared how long it takes for someone to form a positive habit, on average.

“It takes about a month as long as a person is consistent and doesn’t try to change too much at once. Focus on changing one or two small things at a time, rather than trying to change too much at once, becoming overwhelmed by the pressure, and then stopping,” he noted that the slow-but-steady approach is better when building habits at first.

Whales live a long time and return to the same places every year, so this is completely unsurprising. There are sites where you can upload your whale fluke photos so that they can track the whales.

Previously, Bored Panda spoke to financial expert Sam Dogen, the author of ‘Buy This, Not That’ and the founder of Financial Samurai, about what to do if you happen to win the lottery. One major issue is that some of your relatives and friends might start fighting over your winnings because of greed or money problems.

“If the winner doesn’t magnanimously share their winnings with family members and friends, they will be seen as selfish and greedy,” the expert warned what might happen.

That is so awesome! I sometimes wonder if my dad didn't have illegitimate children out there I'm kind of curious to know about since my only brother passed away. I just don't like how all these DNA sites keep your information and can even use it to get a hold of the police. I plan on doing nothing wrong but what if I find out there was a murderer in my family through a DNA ancestry site scary. Oh and my father's passed away so I can't ask him.

Furthermore, if you win the lottery at work or in your investments, never brag about how much you make either. Instead, try to blend in as much as possible. Or, you can implement your capital allocation yourself. Take your time! There is no rush. You just won the lottery!” he said.

But why is it that so many people seem to rely on luck? Recently, Bored Panda spoke about the psychology behind believing in Fate, as well as good and bad luck with Suzanne Degges-White, a Licensed Counselor, Professor, and Chair at the Department of Counseling and Higher Education at Northern Illinois University.

“As long as there have been humans, there has been a desire to imagine that somewhere some thing or some being or some force is helping direct us along our paths to a positive destination. Many people want to believe in luck because that gives us hope that one day maybe it will be 'our turn' to win the lottery, find true love, be at the right place at the right moment,” she told us.

I did a Google and learned that the man, whose name is Ben Carpenter, was waiting at an intersection with his aide and began to cross in front of the stopped truck. His position was too low for the driver to see him and so the truck started moving when the light turned green, lodging the handles in the grill and pushing the wheelchair a distance of 4 miles at a speed of 50 mph. This was seen by many other motorists who called 911 but ultimately it was 2 undercover officers who witnessed the incident and pulled the truck over. Mr. Carpenter was completely unharmed as was the wheelchair other than the rubber burned off his tires and was replaced the next day.

According to Suzanne, what we believe tends to come true: “Life has a funny way of confirming our self-biases.”

"If we believe we're going to fail at something, we've already set ourselves up for failure. Believing that we carry bad luck around like a cloud gives us a reason not to do our best, not to try our hardest, and to make it 'okay' to fail. While we'd think that a strong belief in good luck would work totally in our favor, there are drawbacks to this belief, too," she explained to Bored Panda.

"When we don't take ownership of our good choices, our effective actions, or our hard work, we are selling ourselves short. It's true that sometimes circumstances can 'work in our favor,' or we can meet the right person at the right time, but we still need to recognize our own part in taking advantage of positive circumstances or setting things up so that we can succeed."

The Germans didn't believe him at first, but once they confirmed his story, he became something of a celebrity while recovering in a German hospital. Various German officers would visit with him on a pretty regular basis, wanting his autograph and photos with him. Reportedly Goering wanted to give him a medal, but Hitler vetoed that idea. Even so, he was still regarded as a hero for surviving such a fall.

The job of a ball turret gunner was crazy dangerous. The mechanism to get them up to the body of the plane was easy to break and prone to damage. If this broke and there was an emergency landing, splat. In a water landing they would be the first to be submerged and the turret was supposed to be waterproof, but they were't according to firsthand accounts. Also, the parachutes couldn't fit in the cramped(barely 4 foot across) space, so they were placed in a separate compartment just above the turret. So pretty bad.

Doesn't necessarily help, unless they catch the idiot driving. Happened to my mother - she woke-up to a loud crash, checked the car, which was parked on the front street, and found the entire frony bumper of the car that hit hers. -- The cops showed up on the drunk's doorstep, and despite the warm hood, and her obvious intoxication, she stated there was no one else with keys, no one else in the residence, and she'd been in all night. They had to let her go.

I was walking my dog by a park early one morning (about 5:15am) & a hawk dropped the head of a oppossum right next to me, 3 days later, a snake was dropped 1foot in front of me, I took that as a sign & stopped walking that way!

HEY! HELP ME! I NEED A SMART PERSON! I need to know if there is the equivalent to this in mammals? Would it be like conjoined twins where most of the twin is in the other’s body? I had a friend who had an extra ear on her neck from that. I thought that was from the embryo splitting, but not fully. Or is there no equivalent? I mean, maybe it would be more like a potential twin being inside the placenta of another and possibly not viable if birthed (or hatched). Have two birds ever been recorded hatching from an egg (two eggs) like this?

    Bunzilla
    Community Member
3 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

To answer part of your question, it isn't too uncommon to absorb a twin: about 36% of twin pregnancies and around 50% when there are even more fetuses (triplets, quadruplets, etc), will absorb their siblings. Sometimes, the twin isn't quite fully absorbed, and you get instances like your friend with the extra ear. There are also people who end up being called 'chimeras', because they still have the DNA of their twin inside of them, and it can cause all kinds of health issues. There was also one case where a woman ended up almost losing her kids because the DNA said she wasn't related to them, because she was a 'chimera'. To answer another part of your question, apparently it's very rare to get twin birds, even if you have two yolks on one egg. In this case, I imagine the embryo in the larger egg wouldn't have enough room with the second full egg within. Not only that, but the chick in the second egg would have to break through two sets of shells, which would be very difficult.

My guess is that it's camping equipment from the bed of the truck. Looks like an ice chest, tarp, camp cookware. The angle looks correct for it to have fallen over the cab of the hanging truck.

It's Australia, home of the deadliest spiders in the world. Dousing it in bug spray, stomping to a pulp, and possibly use of fire just seems like a reasonable survival move there.

The trucker may be at fault here but just in case yall need reminded.... Give! Trucks! Room! At 60 mph, under perfect conditions, it takes around 350 ft for a semi to come to a complete stop. And that number is extremely optimistic, depending on the reaction time of the driver. If you're in traffic, that big gap right in front of them is there for a reason.

Fortunately it fell away from me, but it was so sudden I had no time to react, so had it had fallen towards me I don't think I would have survived.

We once had a really bad storm and a dead tree in our front yard about maybe 50ft tall. My mom wanted to go to the store before the storm got really bad, so we took her car, which was right where the tree fell into our driveway, but we were gone before it fell. It completely missed the other cars in the driveway, but my mom's car would've been totalled if we hadn't left when we did. 😆

Trilobites were marine arthropods, and would routinely shed their exoskeletons in order to grow, much like other arthropods do. (Crabs, lobsters, shrimp, scorpions, centipedes, beetles, spiders, etc.)

American football 🏈 (say what you want idc) is unbelievably dangerous. My brother had a full scholarship to Clemson back in the late 1970S and was Valedictorian. He was playing in the final game, mostly as a happy ending sort of thing, and he was clipped from the side receiving a career ending injury to his knee. Lucky for him he is very smart and 3m paid his way through school. Otherwise he wouldn't have been able to attend college.

3m is a different kind of scholarship than a sports scholarship. It is usually for STEM fields.that is why she said he was lucky to be smart. He was able to get a 3m scholarship to fall back on when his sports scholarship was revoked due to his injury

Yes. The OP opened the bottle and placed the tablets like this to give the impression they were this way on their own when the bottle was opened. The reality is, that feat would be impossible, considering the only way these tablets can be suspended this way is through compression, which would be a result of the outer rim of the bottle being smaller than the circumference of the outer edge of the tablets. Since this can't happen without applied pressure (which doesn't exist inside a bottle) this picture, and what it attempts to portray, is a hoax. This was created, not a chance occurrence. For the record, that's what's actually going on here. What OP wanted you to think was going on was they opened their bottle and had anxiety when they saw the tablets magically connected this way. But it didn't happen, they made it happen.

Did they leave it open on accident, I hope? I have left my windows cracked before to keep the car cool but after a bee found its way in, and a spider built a web that I shoved my face through, I abandoned that practice.

That's Old Man Cactus! The little white "hairs" after modified spikes that help protect it from frost and sunlight. If you very gently touch them, it really does feel like hair (which is probably why this bubble was okay), but don't go too far or you'll get it from a yellow spike they conceal.

If it is Florida could be a Burmese or Reticulated python. Head shape seems similar. Brown patterned snakes are the hardest to identify for me by pattern alone. There are so many similar patterned species. North Carolina here. We have 6 venomous snakes regionally also!
