My grandfather, Thomas Tarpy, opened and ran his own grocery. He started as a bag boy at another grocer, and he made his own way. By the time he died in 1981, he was able to support a family of 9 children, and had a “mansion” (it always just seemed like a large house to me). Amazing man.
