Sarah Hatton’s “Tipping Point” sculptures raise awareness of the double edged sword killing our reefs and ocean life: critically high temperatures and plastic pollution.

I created “Tipping Point” on the cusp of the global debate over a ban on single-use plastics, and the scientific consensus that a 1.5 degree rise in ocean temperature will essentially wipe out coral reefs as we know them. Reefs are the first step in a chain of ecosystem collapse.

Tipping Point, distills these complex issues into the creation of several different coral-like sculptures, each with its own gut wrenching symbolic message.

In “Breaking Point”, I used 53,100 plastic straws to create a haunting Great Star Coral.

In “Point of Order”, I used plastic mannequin hands grasping upwards in ghastly unison to form a Staghorn Coral.

For “Tipping Point”, the series’ title piece, I crafted a Giant Brain Coral out of over 7,000 white dominoes, poised to collapse irreversibly.

Please join me in speaking out on behalf of an ecosystem that cannot defend itself from pollution and overheating any longer.
