A white dress, veil, something borrowed, old, new and blue - these are all the pieces essential to a traditional western wedding gown. And as with every tradition, there's an explanation for every detail in the wedding ceremony. And though we are all used to see white tones on a wedding dress, you don't have to look very far for an entirely different approach to the bride's attire. And as the cultures and wedding ceremony traditions vary from country to country, so does the unique dresses. Some brides adorn themselves in colorful wedding dresses, others paint their hands and faces by local customs, and some hide their faces completely behind layers of jewelry or veils.
Not everybody upholds these wedding traditions of course, and not everybody chooses the classical wedding dress color, and many people wear what they want for their Big Day, but this list compiled by Bored Panda provides a fascinating insight into the different ways that different people can celebrate the same occasion. Who knows, maybe you'll find some inspiration!

Indian Wedding
In Indian culture, pink or red wedding dresses are often the garment of choice for brides. Married woman in the north of the country can often be identified by a red dot in the middle of their forehead.
True but to those who don't know the name the description works better to communicate it. Describing it tells a person it's shape and color and location. A name they don't know wouldn't tell them anything.
Load More Replies...I think Indian wedding costumes are amongst the most beautiful in the world. I like that they're so colorful :).
A bindi doesn't mean you are married sindoor on the forehead near your hair partion means you are married .its a red powder
Indian wedding...? LOL! This is more like one of 20 very major types... Just check bengali wedding or marathi wedding or malayali wedding or Naga wedding or kashmiri wedding...
So there are 3 things that go on a bride forehead 1. Mang-tikka : This sits in the center-parting of the hair and is a piece of jewellery 2. Sindoor : Red vermillion applied in the center-parting, usually done during the marriage ceremony to signify that a woman now belongs to her husband 3. Bindi : Sticker like dot in the center of the forehead, usually between the eyebrows, can also be painted on - it is definitely not a piece of jewellery!
The married woman in India is not identified by the red dot. They are identified by red vermillon in their parting of their hair and a special necklace the husband puts on the wife called "mangalsutra." As well as special wedding bangles called a "chura"
Guys the red dot is bindi. A bindi can be of many types from a simple red dot to a designer made, but on wedding it is emphasized to be in red color only, as it signifies that a woman is married and her husband is well alive.
Kazakhstani Bride
In a traditional Kazakh wedding, brides typically wear a headdress known as a "Saukele" as well as a facial veil. The Saukele is usually prepared long before the girls reach the age of marriage.
Like a falrytale princess from when I was a kid! Back then they all seemed to wear pointy hats with thin veils streaming out from them.

she is about 22-24 years old. It's a common age for kazakh girls to get married
People tend to BS, when they know nothing about the subject. The girl is clearly around 20-23 yo. If women in your country look older at this age, marrying at 30+, it does not mean everyone else has to have or follow the same pattern, with you degrading the age of a girl from a country you are not even capable to spot on the map. So please, stop your BS claiming that she looks 14. We do not have and/or support child marriages. Do your research.

What a beautiful lady, and the orange color looks so gorgeous on her.
Oranges and yellows look so much better on darker skin tones. Beautiful
also blue is a stunning colour on dark skin!

Hutuli are the northeastern branch of the free Dacians (ancestors of today's Romanians). They speak Ukrainian due to the fact that they were occupied by the Czarist (Russian) empire, the USSR and then those territories were given a gift by the Republic of Ukraine. The costumes are identical to many others from different areas of Romania. Slavic Dacian-Romanian populations live in many other areas outside Romania. For example: historical Maramures, southern Bessarabia, Pocutia, southern Poland, Slovakia, between the Dniester River and the Dnieper River north of the Black Sea. All these people speak the language of the country in which they live but if you talk to them they will tell you that they are of a different nation. The harsh policies of denationalization have failed to reach their full target.

Japanese Wedding
For a traditional Japanese wedding, the bride often wears a pure white kimono for the formal ceremony, which symbolizes purity and maidenhood. After the ceremony the bride may then change into a red kimono to symbolize good luck.
The bride wears white to symbolize her "death"from her natal family. White is the traditional color for the deceased in Japan. The color white also symbolizes a clean slate of her identity ready and willing to be changed into the colors of her husband's family. In a typical Japanese wedding reception, the bride then changes to a colored kimono or dress to signify her changing status.
NO! They are NOT "flip flops and socks"! Open a book, people! The shoes, are called tabi, and were traditionally made of wood, and served to raised the wearer up out of the water that often collected in the walking paths. The socks are specially made, traditional garments that split between the first and second toe to accommodate the thong of the tabi. Now, if you have made it this far without tl;dr'ing, congratulations! You're not an ignorant waste of bytes!
Actually I had read that the white wedding kimono does symbolize death of the bride to their family, while red one afterwards stands for rebirth to her husband's one. But the symbolism might have changed in contemporary times ;)
Oh wow! Flip this photo and you'd see me taking a photo of them too! They were gorgeous. There were loads of people taking their picture and they were so patient. Meiji shrine, Tokyo in May :)
The large headdress is to "hide her horns of jealousy ". At least that is what I was told when we lived in Japan
Scottish Wedding
Men in Scotland traditionally wear the kilt of his clan for his wedding. After the ceremony, the bride wears a shawl emblazoned with her new husband's clan colors to signify her transition into his family.
Well, maybe this couple is Scottish in origin but living in New York? Or maybe they have Scottish ancestors and wanted to go with their traditions.
Load More Replies...I am the groom in this photo. My last name is Boyd. Those are the Boyd clan colors. Yes, it is Mohonk house in upstate NY. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clan_Boyd My family is many generations removed from Scotland, but we thought the traditional outfit would be nice. My wife is wearing the fly plaid from my outfit as a shawl. That traditional element in the photo was accidental. It just looked nice in the photo. All things considered though, the kilt outfit was made by Kinloch Anderson from Scotland. So it is really Scottish, even if we are not.
It's very nice Boyd & nice way to honor your ancestors.
Load More Replies...So people aren't allowed to acknowledge their heritage then? I think it's a beautiful tradition. If your family actually has a legitimate tartan, should you not be allowed to wear it on significant occasions that traditionally call for it to be worn? Maybe someone who is born and raised in Scotland doesn't have actual Scottish roots. It's kind of rude to assume from a photo and no information about a person or their family what they are "able" to do for their family traditions. Maybe his or her family would have been shamed or disappointed if the family tartan wasn't used... which is a whole seperate can of worms lol. Just food for thought. The only way to progress acceptance in the world is to actually accept.
Actually she does not traditionally wear a shawl. The tradition is to have a sash pinned on her by her groom's mother during the ceremony to welcome her as a new clanswoman.
This photo was taken at a place called Mohonk Mountain house resort in New Paltz New York.
We kind of bucked tradition at our wedding. My husband was presented with a sash of our clan's colors to signify his acceptance into the family.
My cousin had a traditional Scottish wedding with dancers and all. It was one of the most fun weddings I've been to!
Mongolian Bride
In a traditional Mongolian wedding ceremony, the bride and the groom each wear what's known as a Deel. A Deel is a form of patterned clothing that's been worn for centuries by Mongols and other nomadic tribes in Central Asia.

I am sorry but this is not very traditional Mongolian clothing, probably the photo was taken somewhere in Inner Mongolia
This is not Mongolian costume, I'm Mongolian so i can say. This is kind of Chinese style. Don't do people confuse. ????
I agree with Daria. Never seen that hat and dress in Mongolia before. We call it a "Deel" as it says. Some patterns and buttons are same most likely on that beautiful dress. But not really sure about a hat. I wonder, how will be man's costume with it.
Looks no exactly mongolian, this is more like avangard style... from Inner Mongolia (China)
This is absolutely not Mongolian Dress. Bad research has been done.
Romanian Bride From Oas Region
Weddings in Oas are an important event in the north-west part of Transylvania. The wedding is organized by the parents as well as the bride-and-groom-to-be and various different rituals are involved including the preparation of the dowry and the costumes, choosing the godparents, and preparing the wedding flag.
Boots are favored as weddings are often than not met with festive dances and practices. This pattern of clothing is found in other subcultures that can be subdivided among the primary ethnicities in the country - Romanian and Hungarian. Slavs & Saxons have had more influence in the past, but have since the Second World War reduced their numbers due to forced immigration.

In China the colour red is considered to symbolize good luck. The colour is also believed to keep away evil spirits. It's therefore no surprise that traditional Chinese wedding outfits almost always feature the colour red.
The Chinese don't actually wear these anymore. You'll only see these in period films or the couple's photo shoot
traditionally today, Chinese don't dress up in ancient wedding costumes like the picture shown. Chinese has long time adopted white gowns and men suits (similiar to any modern wedding in the west). While majority Chinese still maintains traditional ceremony such as tea ceremony , the diversity of Chinese race from all parts of the world celebrates their big day whichever fits their social stands.
This picture is not accurate. The clothes these two people are wearing are traditional wedding outfits from about 100 years ago. No one nowadays would dress like this for a wedding. NOw I question the accuracy of the other pictures. ugh!
But it is traditional, now Chinese usually wear white dresses and suits, but this is the traditional Chinese wedding clothes

I think it's so cool that some cultures get to paint their faces during their wedding. It just doesn't mean "love" to me and I want to do something more colorful.
I am from Serbia and I never saw or heard about thing like this. Traditional Wedding Costumes And Bridal Crown From Norway
In Norway, the traditional wedding costume is called a Bunad. It can also be worn for other occasions such as christening parties.
Oooou, bunad is not a wedding costume. It is national costume and someone use it on their wedding day (and other parties as well)
Exactly. Though it seems like they wear a white bunad to the wedding, like these in the picture, while wearing black, blue or other colours to the other events. :)

So do brides in Finland. It's a funny game while cutting the wedding cake - the bride tries to step on her husband's toes, and the groom tries to avoid it by keeping his feet away from her reach - while still holding hands. The quicker one is believed to be the boss in their household. Usually this makes cutting the cake very difficult. I agree that no one should get married under the age of 18. I also agree that NO ONE should ever be forced to marry someone they don't want. But, you are basing your opinions and your judgments on 1 picture. Before you start judging others, do your homework. Yes we should save the children, of course we should. But how can you tell from this picture if the girl is under 18? smh....
First, none of us knows how old she is, or why she is crying. A picture only captures one little moment in time. I do hope she is NOT a child and that she IS happy to be married. I want to say thank you to Uche E for explaining how things happen where s(he) is from. First real answer/comment of this entire post. I do not know the culture over there, so I don't know how they do things there. Here in the US, when my daughter was married (she was 20 years old and her husband was 25), my mother said that the rain that day showed that she would not cry a lot in her marriage. It's an old wives tale, but it is interesting. Everything....and I do mean EVERYTHING is different all over the world. Unless you observe it yourself you have no idea what is truly going on. Thank you to the people who do rescue children in bad situations, sadly this happens in my country too. It's against the law, but it happens.
"It's against the law, but it happens..."?! Are you kidding me? It should not happen one way or another!! Emotions aside, it is unexcusable to defend this type of way of life. Bedouin wedding veil in Jordan & some parts of Palestine, not Israel. And they are different in style in every region, city, vilage even family. As well as the number & material of the coins orten signify family status and wealth
This is palestenian bedouin bride! And it has beatiful dance too, only the daughters of the tribe leaders wear this, and there is great tradetion where men from all over try to reveal the face and she fights with tradetional knife the man who succeed to take the veil off get married to the bride! All it goes in a beatiful show of power while dancing and singing traditional songs ???? Love palestine #free_palestine
That seems to be a trend among wedding outfits around the world, just like a very decorated wedding dress

Not only are they not Arabs nor Palestinians they are all Israeli citizens. when the Jews and the Arabs had their fights back before 1948, beduim took no sides, but the Arabs attacked them even though they were not enemies. Arabs are hated by the beduim to this day, all Beduim within Israel are Israeli citizens and take a great proud of being a pert of the IDF (Israel defense forces) the lot of you that know nothing about Israel should get educated before you open you stupid mouths.

Traditional Javanese wedding outfits generally include a sarong, a high-collared shirt, a jacket and a blangkon (a traditional Javanese headdress) for the groom, and a sarong, a kebaya (long-sleeved blouse), and a selendang for the bride. The woman's hair is often put in a flat bun called a Sanggul.
It's a pattern drawn on the bride’s forehead. It signifies the form of a lotus to symbolize purity in Javanese culture.

Traditional Bride Costume From Schaumburg-lippe, Germany
In Germany, traditional bridal headdresses vary from region to region. In the Black Forest valley, the headdress is large and decorated with hundreds of beads and glass balls, while in Buckenburg the emphasis is more on flowers than beads.
I guess these are all rather VERY traditional - really, never seen anyone wear such a Tracht at his/her wedding
Because nobody cares about traditions and their heritage anymore.
Load More Replies...I'm from Schaumburg-Lippe and born in "Bückeburg". I know about the Tracht. But I also never seen a traditional Tracht-Bridal dress. But maybe my grandmother does. ;)
What in the playground balls? That is special beautiful colors different shape!
Yemenite Jewish Bride
In a traditional Yemenite Jewish wedding, the bride wears jewelry and an elaborate headdress decorated with flowers and leaves. These are believed to ward off evil. Gold threads are also woven into the fabric of her clothes and wedding celebrations traditionally last seven days.
I've been trying to figure out how any wedding could last a week. And I really hope this bride didn't have to wear that head dress for very long, it looks really heavy.
I’m 3% Jewish. She looks like a Conehead. I do like the jewlery, i will use the element of extraordinary size and traditional patterns in my wedding 👰🏾
this showed me if I was born as a jewish girl, I will probably convert before get married. Damn, it's so too much and prissy.
You don't have to wear it. Just like you don't have to wear a wedding dress. You can wear whatever you like to your wedding, it's just traditional for this group of Jewish people to wear something like this.

The wedding customs in Bulgaria's Ribnovo region are influenced by Islamic traditions. Festivities last for five days and include lots of singing and dancing. On the second day the bride's face is painted white and adorned with sequins.
Lol i am bulgarian and i have never seen wedding in Ribnovo. Usually bulgarian weddings are with white nice dress, elegant suit... like in the movies haha. This should be some really small region..
Uhm, I, too am bulgarian and haven't seen such wedding attire, but this is about traditional dresses and ours aren't white at all. Learn a little history maybe?
Load More Replies...Please, be kind and show this picture, which is a good example of traditional wedding outfit and which is more accurate and presents larger territory, than in Ribnovo. Thank you! 1433767498...bb0818.jpg
Actually this is traditional wedding costume in a very small region in Bulgaria. Although we have 7 ethnological regions, the weddiing attire from area to area, even in the same region, is very difficult. From the very dark colours in Shumen region to the multicoloured in Yambol, from the mainly red in Sofia, to mainly white in Varna, it is impossible to show all traditional attire of Bulgaria. We have mixtures of many cultures passed through Bulgaria, which we have adapted here. However, nowadays the weddings with traditional attire is very rare. We use the widely spread idea of white dress and few inherited from abroad traditions as well.
Lol, this is true for the whole Balkans. We are alike "као јаје јајету".
Load More Replies...None of you really got that the post doesn't represent the traditions of the whole country, but just the different small ethnic groups.
This is rare and extremely interesting ritual, but shoul't be called traditional for the Bulgarians. Rather, it is specific for a very small group of people in a small region....
Looking at the dresses of the two other ladies next to the bride I started suspecting that this is a traditional wedding outfit of those Bulgarians who have accepted Islam for their religion (the official religion in Bulgaria is Orthodox Christianity). An indeed I did a little research and it tuned out that in Ribnovo the population consists only by those people. So this is not the common accepted traditional Bulgarian wedding dress but actually the author of the article doesn't claim that - it is correctly pointed that this is the costume only in Ribnovo. Anyway I really hoped to see some pictures of other Bulgarian traditional weeding costumes because they are really beautiful and interesting so I think that they deserve to have a place in this article.
This does not represent Bulgaria's traditional costume. This is a very small region and a very closed society you're presenting here. Anyone interested can invest some time into researching the actual bulgarian traditional costume, it's called носия (nosia). The bulgarian woman, if you believe the songs, has a clean oval face, a headpiece depending on the region, a shirt and a dress on top. Sometimes she has a skirt instead and a vest. Sometimes she has an apron, sometimes she has a belt. It's very simple when you think about it, but the magic comes with the rich and colorful embroidery on the clothes. It's beautiful. This over here is slightly unnerving.
It doesn't say it represent a Bulgarian traditional costume (no such thing btw, all regions are different). It specifically says Ribnovo region.

Bride In Eritrea
The Rashaida are a Muslim tribe populating Eritrea and northeast Sudan. When a Rashaida woman is to be married, she stays in seclusion until her wedding, and the Rashaida only marry their own. A Rashaida bridal veil contains rows of metallic thread embroidery and pearls which are geometrically arranged.

Looks slightly like a Sith Lord. Hell, maybe this is where the inspiration came from!
Tibetan Brides
For a traditional Tibetan wedding, the bride wears a white, woollen wedding dress which may be layered with brightly coloured aprons and robes. Often there are so many layers that it can sometimes be difficult to see the bride underneath!
Kinnauri Bride
The Kinnauri people come from Kinnaur district in Himachal Pradesh, India. In traditional Kinnauri weddings, the bride wear a heavy layer of gold and silver ornaments and a handmade garland made from dry fruits. The bride also wears a hand woven dress with a brightly embroidered hand woven shawl to cover the shoulders.

@António Lima, what the hell is wrong with you, you cannot decide what is beautiful or not and most of all you cannot criticize others country traditions and customs.
I don't think Antonio Lima did either of those things.... He said how is he going to kiss you? Good question. Mine would be how does she see where she is going.... That doesn't mean I am criticizing anyone or their traditions. It also doesn't mean I don't think it is beautiful. It means 'How does she see where she is going." why would you jump in him for asking a question? That is just rude.
