I started creating mosaics from different types of food because I am passionate about the idea that positive, accurate representation is necessary for people to feel seen and proud of who they are; it’s also an excellent way for viewers from different backgrounds to gain a better understanding and acceptance of other perspectives and traditions. I see food as key to encouraging discussion, celebrating diversity, and, of course, allowing people to see themselves reflected and have their story told… you are what you eat, right?

I first began creating mosaics about 2 years ago, just for fun, starting with some spices I had around the house, and created the map of India (featured below). I realized that I enjoyed making mosaics out of different materials and that people enjoyed seeing the finished product and “behind the scenes” details I released as I made each design, so I began to experiment with art representing other parts of the world and then different TV shows, webseries, and identities within the LGBTQ+ community. I love seeing how each mosaic turns out and how all the ingredients come together to create a vibrant picture; more importantly, it makes me very happy to see that the mosaics I’ve made have the potential to make a positive impact on the lives of those who see (and sometimes buy) my work.

I currently have mosaics representing 13 countries and the continent of South America, as well as 11 different images (and counting) from selected films, TV shows, and identities within the LGBTQ+ community. Each mosaic is made entirely with specially-selected, edible materials which have been carefully researched and chosen to best reflect the subject matter, including foods typical of the target country, identity, or represent some aspect of the TV show or series being featured. A full portfolio of my current work can be found on my website, https://patria-pgh.com; all work is available for sale at https://patriaprintshop.com or by commission: https://patria-pgh.com/commissions.

I hope you enjoy my work – see if you can identify the ingredients in each piece!
