One of the most beautiful traditions in Northern Romania is ‘’Jianu’’. In a small city called Darmanesti, on Christmas day, people wearing brightly colored costumes travel to different houses, dancing, playing drums, interpreting a play inspired by the outlaw Iancu Jianu.
Iancu Jianu was one of the most known Romanian outlaws. He was leading around 2000-3000 outlaws. His actions were directed against the boyars and he had a strong national character.
The carol has a lot of characters that take part of the play: ‘’New Year’’, “Old Year’’, two outlaws, the shepherd, the officer, the hunter, the Turkish man and Iancu Jianu’s girlfriend, Soltanina, the only feminine character in the act.
