I got into meditation a few years back while working with individuals with disabilities and mental health illnesses. While researching coping skills, I came across meditation and decided it would be interesting to try some of the different types out with some of the individuals. During this discovery, I found that I really enjoyed guided imagery meditations as it gave my active imagination something to really focus on.

After a really stressful day at work, I went home and just listened to music. While listening, an idea for a meditation floated through my mind. After that, I started to create my own meditations. My goal with the meditations has been to describe a scene that has the listener focus on what is being described to them and to use their imagination to add more details to the scene. This allows the listener to focus on something positive while reducing stresses.

About a few months after creating my meditations, I was working with an individual at their job when they were very upset about a situation they were dealing with. To help them calm down so that they could get back to their work, I came up with a meditation that was very short and simple, but effective. This started what I call mini meditations.

My mini meditations last about 2-3 minutes long and are meant to be used when intruding thoughts and emotions are interrupting whatever it is that you need to be focusing on in the moment. Whether you are at work, school, in an important meeting, the meditations are to help you relieve stress at least long enough that you can get back to what you are supposed to be doing. Each mediation has the listener imagine the thoughts, emotions, and feelings as something physical that will be replaced by something positive.

Doing meditations has been proven to have many good benefits and my hope is to see more people using meditations to help with the stresses of life. So do take a moment to pause and relax, even if it’s just for a few minutes.
