We all have geography lessons in school. And while we learn many interesting things about the maps and geography in them, there's always room for improvement.

So, today, let's look at these interesting maps of Europe that we picked and found online. After all, there's no wrong time to learn something new. And who knows, maybe you'll end up using these facts somewhere (maybe a trivia night?), unlike some things you were taught at school.

I just found out that a lot of Chinese people were cannibalized during the Cultural Revolution. It was not out of hunger or for cultural/historical reasons, but just to thoroughly disrespect the person killed. They particularly went for the hearts and livers. So eating your PM? Sure, why not? That’s humans for you!

Just like some places in Brazil, Portugal has “Fogo!”, fire, because of the similarity with the F word, “F o d a”. Pretty interesting to see the use of similar sounds to tone down curse words being a case elsewhere.

Pekki does not mean fat- it means INTO the fat. And where does the human body have lots of fat - in the buttocks. So Pekki actually means up your a*s. Kid friendly would be "Kurat!" - meaning the devil. As the devil is a kinda chaotic neutral guy in Estonian folklore - strong but stupid and deathly afraid of wolves, thunderstorms and his grandmother.

The climate o Cyprus is quite hot, because is affected by Africa and Sahara desert. On the other hand Japan (Tokyo) has colder climate with frequent snows, because is affected by the closer-by Siberia.

Maps are leading us in nearly every step of our way. They are reachable to everyone - just a few presses and you can see Google or Apple Maps. But that wasn’t always the case.

The history of maps can be traced as far back as 5000 years ago. The first-ever maps were used to depict small areas in pictures. And there was no set of rules on how everything should be drawn, which made maps quite inaccurate.

Later, the map-making art was taken over by the Greeks and Romans. The most notable works of this mapping period were those of Claudius Ptolemaeus. He was a geographer, mathematician, and astronomer, who came up with longitude and latitude lines. And, well, that revolutionized European geographic thinking.

I almost bought a house in rural Ireland for less than what a year's rent in Dublin would come to. Not a hovel, not a fixer-upper, an actual livable house. I simply couldn't justify it because although I would be open to moving to Ireland, I have obligations in my country for at least the next few years.

In the capital maybe. We have something called London prices. They a massively higher than anywhere else in the country. City centres command a premium. A nice 2 bed apartment with parking can be had for under 1000 elsewhere.

Then, during the middle ages, there wasn’t much progress in the map-making scene. Most of the maps that were produced during this time were of monasteries, which were influenced by religious devotion. They were heavily decorated with angels and imaginary monsters.

However, the Islamic world made some progress in the map-making area. The most notable instance is of Al-Idrisi, an Arab scholar who produced numerous world maps and geography books that heavily influenced this scientific field.

Not in Europe, but in my 30's, I, a balding, reasonably fit, averagely built, fairly intelligent, outgoing and articulate middle class English chap, but not a particularly handsome one, working as a high end Chef at a senior level was given an opportunity to work in the USA (this was the 1980's) as a consultant / advisor / trainer for a consortium of private Clubs / Restaurants / Resorts. It was an eye opener ; lets just say that my 'love life' went from average in the UK to supercharged within the space of a month, so much so that it got to the point that I was actually turning down 'dates' as I was knackered !!! Lots of fun, many, many lovely people met along the way, professionally and personally but it got to a point around 6 months in that I stopped going out as it was exhausting me trying to avoid, if not harassment, attention. Nearly wore my w***y to a stump and made me appreciate the finer and nicer aspects of being in a stable relationship !! Happy days, long ago with many

I love how it's basketball in so many countries. It's crazy how good many of the European national teams are, despite having such relatively small populations.

After the Middle Ages, the invention of the printing press by Johannes Gutenberg pushed the monasteries out of the dominance of map production. Also, the printing process becoming more available resulted in the growth of major publishing houses. And they produced maps that were accessible to everyone, no matter their financial status.

Even more, improvements in mapping were brought about by the accessibility of public learning and the thirst for knowledge. Increasingly, maps started having more colors showcasing various aspects of the presented place.

Also, in the late 1700s, thematic maps started showing up; for example, those showing the spread of certain illnesses or the extent of a flood.

Now, the maps on our phones are made by using satellite systems and surveying techniques. With these tools, cartographers can measure everything with precision, which was never achievable before. And due to their precision, maps have become an irreplaceable aspect of nearly everyone’s life.

rejoining the EU? most people I know in the UK would LOVE to join the EU now that they realise how bad it actually is after leaving because the government massively misled people with false promises. Or do they mean Europe is scared of the UK rejoining, because in that case... I get it. xD there's things I love about living here but also... yikes sometimes.

Maybe by European standards, but I wouldn't call any EU country 'very religious'. Poland and Italy are considered the most radical in that sense, but even they would feel very secular compared to the US, for example. These numbers have more to do with traditional gender roles. It's a lot more common in Western Europe for women to focus on their education and careers before getting married, while in the East, men are still expected to be the breadwinner.

It is not "Kione Greek", but "koine", and in 600 AD it was probably not that either! (The 5th century marks the transition of Classical Greek to the Greek spoken today, the latter called "koine" - common; it is unlikely that the transition was "instant".)

Nope, Sweden has a very affordable and sustainable public housing stock which is reasonably priced coupled with a (mostly) progressive, liberal political and educational system that allows individuals to flourish from an early age, why do you think that Sweden and most Scandinavian countries who follow the same formula regularly feature in the top 10 index of happiness ?

This relies heavily on available housing and the price of it. In the Netherlands (= Dutch people, whoever invented this confusing naming, shame on you) teens who enter any type of higher education usually leave home at 17.

I think this is more a reflection of peer pressure - most UK people who declare themselves CofE are not actually believers, they're just not prepared to admit that they don't really believe in god. France has a proud history of secularism. so they don't mind admitting it, but in practice it's a much more traditionally religious place than the UK.

In the Balkans where religion is equaled with nationality, there is a decent amount of people who will declare to belong to a certain religion though they don't give a flying f***k about God and spirituality.

I get that this is a Europe wide map but if you were to look smaller scale you'd see most of the cities fail air quality standards. For instance I'm in a scotland which shows blue here but my street and several others around regularly surpass the dangerous to human health levels of pollution. Most countries with any decent size, it is from their former colonies. France's black people are mostly from former colonies, Italy is mostly Ethiopians, etc. Because for people leaving those countries many speak the former colonial language, and many of thse countries have or used to have easier immigration from their former colonies. It is why Eastern Europe and the Balkans are so low, no former black colonies.

Hmm. Norway and Sweden have significant Black populations, but never had any Black colonies - or much in the way of anything you could call an "empire" anyway. Ireland's never had an empire either, not unless you count the period from 1801-1922 when it was officially part of the UK, and therefore nominally an integral part of an established Imperial power - although suggesting to any Irish person that Ireland was once an imperial power would probably get a response along the lines of "Are you mad?" with a liberal amount of swearing.

"Mostly white" does not equate to "ethnically/culturally homogenous" in most European countries. Many countries have a diverse population with many different cultural or ethnical backgrounds.

That's it exactly Hugh! Just let the leaders duke it out hand to hand and leave the rest of us alone. WWI was essentially a falling out between cousins FFS. (Edit because I don't think tone came across...I was agreeing with Hugh and criticising the leadership in Europe at the time of WWI, which resulted in millions of people dying for effectively a fall out between cousins).

This is also 5 years old data. I think after Russia invaded Ukraine, the numbers in many places like Poland are probably higher. And Ukraine, between those that left and those who are pro-russia, 62% of the population willing to fight for Ukraine sounds about right.

Dunno, I'm from Poland and since the invasion more people (at least in my friends/acquintances circles) talk about immigration than about defending the country. To be fair, right now our country is so messed up (economically, politically, socially, not to mention the Church influences), there's not too much to fight for.

I am glad that this percentage is lower each day in Balkan region. We had 90ies, and anyoine with few braincells more is against any type of war. To be honest, there is no war to defend your country, just to defend government and theis personal interests. Regular people can only suffer in war.

Depends on your definition of "speaks". UK schools teach foreign languages (which and whether it was compulsory varies over the years). However, they start late and are not very advanced by the time they finish. I did both French (5 years) and German (2 years) and I speak neither with any fluency.

False. In Romania we are taught English since the 1st grade so anyone over 25 had very high chances of knowing at least basic English. Also, we have a large population of migrants in the UK, Italy and Spain which means we have lots of people speaking English, Italian and Spanish . In the western part of the country they also teach German and lots of people are of German descent so you'll have no problem finding even older generations being fluent in German. In other parts of the country, due to the minorities you can find people speaking Hungarian + Romanian or russian+ Romanian and lastly, we are also taught French in school since before communism and people love watching Spanish or Turkish soap operas. As a conclusion, the average old Romanian person will speak either just Romanian or Romanian + German/hungarian/Russian, the average middle aged Romanian will have high changes of speaking italian/spanish/English and young people all speak at least conversational English +1more

Also, in the cities due to the job market you are not hired if you don't speak English as well so it's close to impossible to find a person under 35 who doesn't speak at least conversational English, in the cities and now yoing people also are curious about languages and pick up stuff like Scandinavian languages, Japanese or Korean or even Turkish.

But how us that relevant? Neither Dutch nor French are foreign languages for Belgium. This table is about the percentage people that don't speak foreign languages.

What a weird graph.. if your country is not an English speaking country, English would be the "foreign" language and I imagine the percentage of people who know a little basic English is quite high in today's world.

The Conservative government that threw the baby out with the bathwater by having such a dumbed down referendum really, really f****d up the future of the UK for at least a generation. I even knew expats living in Spain who voted to leave who thought a deal could be brokered to allow them unlimited access to their properties only to find out that now, under the new 'agreement' they could only go to their European places for a limited time every year and would be penalised if they exceeded their quota ..... The general British public are a thick lot at the best of times, they should never have been given a vote on something as important as leaving Europe and all that that withdrawal entailed (not that the ruling party at the time had a f*****g clue either - bloody inbred toffs with no idea )

Er, we had the vote in 1975 and it was better than 2:1 for "remain" (67.2%). We only had that second referendum in 2016 because Cameron was so arrogant and ignorant he thought a second "remain" result was a foregone conclusion. The way I look at it, since we've had two referenda on the subject of EC/EU membership, why not have a third? The Brexiteers can hardly complain. If they could never accept the 1975 result as the last word, why should the rest of us accept the 2016 vote as being final?

And still 25% of the Dutch elected somebody who absolutely wants to leave the EU. The Netherlands are the worlds second biggest export country of agricultural goods, depending on definition 60 to 80% of the produce is exported. Leaving the EU might not be a smart chojce. Yes, there ate some uncomfortable or stupid rules, but there is a lot of free transport and subsidiary (?) money to be lost.

subsidiary => subsidy (subsidiary means something else). By the way, here in the UK, almost all the "stupid EU rules" that the right wing press complain about turn out to have been invented by the UK government and have nothing to do with the EU at all. But: almost all is not the same as "all".

Also on the cultural background which is the real question. Skin color doesn't tell about your culture, values, religion or social habits. I married a Muslim guy from Middle East, another man from the same background may have not been the right for me. Even in order to fight racism, we shouldn't forget that there are also cultural differences.

I would never dictate who any of my daughters (and sons) marry. Providing whoever they married was decent, respectful, and kind to my child. I would try to prevent any relationship if I felt there was any abuse of any kind. It doesn't matter what colour they are, what race, or what sex, just be a good person and ensure my child is happy and loved.

No one who is forced to interact with them calls them "Romani" and in fact it's only recently they've taken to calling themselves that for political sway. I've spent the past 12 years living in Romania, the country with the highest population, but also one of the cities with the highest population, and i thought all the same things about discrimination.....until i actually lived around them. The endless stream of half starved stray animals that center around their shanty towns, the never ending stream of parent sanctioned CHILD pregnancies, the piles of trash, the smell of BURNING PLASTIC, the pickpocketing, and thievery. Parents, handing TODDLERS, a plastic bag with solvent in it to huff. Their ethnicity, isn't the issue...their behavior is. The only ones making it about "race" are the ones that don't understand the problem. If you don't understand the problem, you probably shouldn't comment on it.

I think this map is probably based on official statistics. Obviously in Moscow, the OFFICIAL figures for reported crime and so on are not going to reflect reality especially when it comes to crimes committed by those working for the state - I don't suppose anyone in the Moscow police records accusations of police brutality, or if they do, the officer concerned finds that their career doesn't work out at all well.

Most European nations have a point when it comes to the precise location of the border. I can't get my head round 23% of Brits thinking that parts of neighbouring countries really belong to us, unless it's (presumably humorously) reasserting the ancient English claim to Calais and various other parts of France (if we left it at Calais, there might be some French people who weren't too unhappy, given some of the opinions I've heard expressed about the town).

Bull c**p. Greece repeatedly has declared that has no claims at all to any other country.

That low in Russia? Don't they lay claim to all their former lands even parts of Poland?

This kind of figures. We watch Polish Who Wants to be a Millionaire. The top prize is 1 million zloty. This is only about £200k (or Euro or USD).

I wonder why they chose to use the Median, rather than the Arithmetic Mean, or, better yet, the Geometric Mean? Using the latter would have been a much more meaningful expression. Also, using absolute values distorts the picture too. What would be more interesting is the relative wealth, i.e. the disposable wealth, or play-money, left over after all needs are paid for.

I think this is per household, not adult. I only say this because I just read a Fortune magazine article that reported the median in the US just 30 minutes ago that reported the US median was $193k. Which would put it inline with how I'd expect it to compare to Europe. Though it wouldn't explain why Germany, Ireland, and Sweden are so much lower than the other "rich" countries - perhaps those entries are actually per adult. I could be wrong, but I seriously doubt the median Briton is 2x+ richer than the the median German/Swede/Irish.

Well.. there are a Lies, Damned Lies, and here we have Statistics... Wealth pc is calculated differently between countries, but lets take Iceland... Here "wealth" calculation includes all assets and housing prices are stupidly high right now. Therefor if anyone has a smallest apartment - he already has at least 200k in wealth (double that if it's a cheapest house).
