People often compare themselves and others in areas like looks, money, intelligence, and success. Studies suggest that about 10 percent of our thoughts involve these kinds of comparisons. The social comparison theory, developed by psychologist Leon Festinger in 1954, says that we judge our own worth based on how we stack up against others. However, constant comparisons can not only lead to motivation for improvement, but can also result in feelings of dissatisfaction, guilt, or even harmful behaviors like lying or unhealthy eating.

When people compare themselves to others to track their personal growth or get inspired to do better and build a more positive self-image, it can be a good thing. But it's important to be careful not to fall into the trap of making negative comparisons. Who we compare ourselves to matters a lot: If we just want a self-esteem boost, we tend to compare ourselves to people who are worse off than us, but this can become unhealthy. When we aim to improve, we often compare ourselves to peers who are similar to us but excel in a specific area.

You obviously enjoy to give service and be surrounded with people. You climbed up the ladder until you reached your dream of becoming a care giver. A very humbling profession and the dedication to care and save others before our own. I happened to be a retired ER/trauma nurse. Forced to retire because I am suffering from MS and Stiff person syndrome. But as a Nurse we don’t easily surrender and that being said, “ain’t we the most difficult patients? Hahaha….”. Keep the fort, 👍 I terribly miss it.

My pup will destroy stuffies in seconds but the ones from Bark are a dense rubber core with a stuffies skin over it so when your dog tears the fabric away he still has a toy

All puppies and kittens have blue eyes when they are born. A pup (or kitty) will have its "permanent" eye color generally by the time they're around 4-5 months old. (BTW - wolf cubs are born with blue eyes too!)

Using our social connections to drive progress can be really effective. For example, in a study, friendly competition motivated people to exercise more because they encouraged each other to do better. This "social ratchet effect" meant that each person's effort inspired others to step up. On the other hand, social networks where people simply offered positive support were not as helpful.

As a long time cat owner I actually find the second picture even nicer - all kittens will snuggle together, but usually they drift apart as the get older, sometimes even becoming hostile to each other. Here's two of ours as kittens, who don't really get along any more. IMG-202111...9-jpeg.jpg IMG-20211102-WA0001-651143082ae09-jpeg.jpg

People tend to make two types of comparisons: upward and downward. In upward comparisons, we measure ourselves against those we perceive as better in some way, while in downward comparisons, we do the opposite. As expected, research shows that downward comparisons tend to boost our self-esteem, but both approaches come with risks – upward comparisons can lead to feelings of insecurity and jealousy, while downward comparisons can foster overconfidence and arrogance.

TBF - on wedding day she was probably tired / stressed / excited / possibly wearing shoes that were not comfortable and had probably been wearing her 'game face' for a while at that point. My wedding was fairly nice in a simple kind of way but after the reception we were both kind of glad to get out of there and relax.

Theodore Roosevelt once referred to comparison as "the thief of joy," and his observation might hold some truth. Social comparison can be a source of motivation for self-improvement, but it can also encourage judgmental, biased, overly competitive, or superior attitudes. Most people have the social skills and self-control to keep their standards for social comparison to themselves, refraining from acting on any envy or resentment triggered by making comparisons. However, their true feelings may surface in other ways.

Comparisons tend to make us feel bad when we only measure ourselves against people who excel in certain qualities. For instance, when we think our social lives are less active, we often compare ourselves to the most social people we know. Recognizing this bias can help us make more realistic and motivating comparisons.

I (female) was super tall during my early teens with all my guy friends of the same age being several meters shorter. Parents used to find it so hilarious, always commenting on the difference and taking photos. Out in the public people often assumed I was an adult woman and I was treated as such. It was truly uncomfortable for me. Hated being made fun of something that I had no control over. In the end it was all just an early growth spurt, not that I’m a tall person (I’m just 167 cm (5’ 6”) tall now).

OP’s brother shouldn’t worry. I was in high school with a guy who was short, like 5’4” tall, in 10th and 11th grades. But when we came back to school on the first day of senior year, he was like 6’4”! He had had an OTT growth spurt over the summer and grew 12”—-an entire foot in height! So never fear, OP’s brother! You will be catching up, and maybe even surpassing, your early growth spurt friend by the time you’re both 18.

Spending too much time on social media, where we see images of exciting events, can lower self-esteem and contribute to feeling down. However, these risks seem to affect mainly people who are very anxious, while some studies suggest that social media can actually boost self-esteem, especially when we look back at our own happy moments with friends.

I rescued him as she was going to unalive him as no one would pay her for him being so small. He's now 8 and perfectly healthy and happy, just the size of 4-5 month old Maine c**n. To be less affected by painful comparisons, pay attention to what triggers this behavior, practice deep gratitude for the good things in your life, and remember that wanting what others have is often a waste of time unless it's something truly valuable, like their kindness or generosity.

Relatable. I became the manager of my apartment building after the previous manager died. He was a nice guy but he sat in his studio apartment and chain smoked all day. Anyway - I helped clean his apartment and the yellow nicotine / smoke was all over the walls. The two pictures above resemble the before and after cleaning of his white apartment door. In fact the before looked more like the darker panel to the right. I was honestly surprised to find out the paint underneath was white. I thought I was washing a tan or light brown door.

That's why I get so irritated with people being irate at not being able to smoke in their apartments (tobacco or weed). 1) I can guarantee the person living next to the smoker could smell it, 2) it gets on EVERYTHING, and 3) outside of serious pro services, is nearly impossible to get rid of. You can get it off the walls, but then it's trapped in the cupboards, in the carpet, under the carpet, and, best of all, in the air system.

Hand to God I thought my grandma's walls were still the same "beige" they were from when the house was bought in the late 70's. I was cleaning a scuff from one of the walls (seriously, the whole living room was the same color) with a magic eraser and literally cleaned off (at the time) 30 years of tar from papa Joe's cigarette smoke. I thought she was gonna be mad because I took the "beige paint" off. 🤣 I kept going and it looked like I'd repainted the living room.

Isaac Asimov and Enid Blyton beat him hands down on volume of output (and profit, I suspect); not that I remain anything other than hugely impressed with Mr Stewart. But you can do an awful lot with an old fashioned manual typewriter, if you put the hours in. Asimov and Blyton did. I've just read that Blyton wrote the 60,000 word book "The River of Adventure" in 5 days. Sat down, and typed solidly. Apparently, she could produce 6,000-10,000 words a day on a portable typewriter. I doubt that Asimov was far behind: a man who apparently was happiest in a small artificially lit room furnished with table, chair, typewriter, and paper.

I read the name wrong at first. I thought it said Zheng Yi instead of Zheng He and was going to comment that this was incorrect. I'm so glad I paused a moment and read it again. Zheng Yi was a pirate in the Qing Dynasty, and arguably, his wife, Ching Shih, is way more interesting than him from that part of history.

While both had the similarity of being skippered by explorers, it’s like comparing an aircraft carrier to a battleship. Both will get you from point A to Z, but do it differently. The Spaniard ships worked in fleets and moved swiftly and maneuvered nimbly. As pirate ships they had an advantage over the larger Chinese ship. Somalian pirate boats over taking container ships is an example. The Chinese ship had the advantage of longer more sustained voyages. It came down to sailing philosophies instead of one being more advanced than the other.

There's an excellent book written by an officer retired from the U.S. navy called '1421'. Very interesting and easy to read. There's some evidence the Chinese got to the Bahamas and more evidence proving they lived on high ground long enough to create a city of perhaps 10,000 in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.

The Chinese treasure ships were massive. They went all over the world, collecting things like giraffes. If the Emperor hadn't closed the gates on China, who knows what might have happened. We really might all be speaking Chinese now and not know any different. Read 1421 by Gavin Menzies. Fascinating

Two gorgeous sets of hair! It breaks my heart to see though. One of my favorite things about my appearance (off of a very short list) has always been my hair. I was sure I'd always have it. My dad is 80 with his own, non-colored, only slightly gray. Now I have bald spots all over. My husband has to help to keep them covered. The slightest shift in my pony tail and they show. My 4.5 year old daughter (Twin A) has 3x as much hair as me now. Her hair is the same as mine. 1/?

It is devastating to one's self-esteem to be a female who is going bald. Doctor's (I've seen many - all different kinds of specialist) don't know the cause. It isn't hormonal / standard female-pattern baldness caused by hormonal changes. I'm 45 and everything else on my list of things I liked is gone now too (but this was the hardest to accept). It's so challenging to teach my daughter's body positivity when I can't muster any for myself. 2/3

a Cardigan and a Pembroke...totally different lineages. first one is family of the dachshund, the one on the right has Viking Blood and has the Nordic Spitz as a great grandfather. Cardigans have a long tail, much rounder ears and are somewhat bigger. Queen Elizabeth II liked the Pembrokes more as they are more sociable and tend to be more loyal to their owners. But either way both are adorable and goof balls.

I live above a dog with horrendous separation anxiety. The howling is heartbreaking. But the owners don’t believe it’s as bad as it is because they’re gone when it happens. Ugh. Do better, pet parents. No creature deserves to cry all day from loneliness.

I was wondering about the rib cage flare too, but some early hominids have it (though not to that degree). It apparently accommodates a larger gut, which gorillas need because they are vegetarians, and it takes longer to digest all the fiber from the plants they live on. If there's a primatologist out there who can correct or elaborate, that would be great.

Incredible that the –in comparison to the other animals on here – tiny badgers have such huge claws.

Eh... real money is made with linen fibers, not wood pulp like paper is. You can often tell the difference without even looking. And the top one is a movie prop, so I can promise you, it feels like paper.

Cause store bought are picked unripe so they make it to you good still. Strawberries are the best right before they go bad on the plant. Problem is that's when they are most vulnerable to disease and pests, along with shelf life. Also different strawberry cultivars.

Store bought stays ripe for a fortnight. Farm fresh stays ripe for 30 seconds. The emphasis in store cultivars was for shelf life before anything else. Now that the shelf life problem has been solved, they are just recently breeding for flavour again. And succeeding.

Whenever Somebody Posts A Photo Of The Milky Way, People Invariably Ask "Is That How You See It With The Naked Eye?". Here's A Representation Of What You Do See Compared To What Comes Out Of The Camera

This photo was taken at the Pinnacles Desert in Western Australia, the moon had just set below the horizon and the core of the Milky Way was rising towards the east and was at about 40 degrees. This obviously isn't a perfect representation but it's pretty close. You won't see any color as our eyes can't determine color very well in low light.
The photo you see on the left is directly out of the camera, no post processing has been done at all and you can see quite a bit of green towards the horizon and some orange and magenta hues in the core. My camera's white balance was set to auto and this is a 30 second exposure. ISO was set at 3200 and aperture was f2.8.

Big mistake here: You must not compare a cameras output with the whole processing chain in you brain. Lot's of "filters" being applied there ;-) The milky way in Australia - or anywhere else remote - is much more impressive with your naked eye than the left-hand image.

Factory farming has created a larger amount of manure, so larger tanks are needed to spread the huge factory farm fields. Back in the day, Farmer Ted only had his own herd of cows to worry about.

    martin734

What on earth are you talking about? These are widely used in the UK which has no factory farming anything like in the US. A fairly average dairy herd of 100 head will produce about 45 tons of slurry per week. This is enough to cover approximately 1 hectare. Most factory farms are actually quite small in size with very few fields, and almost none that are used to grow crops, so why would a manure spreader of any size be used on a factory farm? The vast majority of slurry and manure created by factory farms is sold to arable farms as fertiliser.

2 different species. One is a fish, the other a porpoise. Dolphins are warm blooded, have live births, and nurse their young. Sharks are cold blooded, hatch eggs either inside or outside their body, and do not nurse their young. It's like comparing a chimpanzee brain with a snake brain. Of course they are going to look vastly different.

Unlikely. They are already starting to turn off older cell/mobile networks. 3G will soon be phased out in the UK. There won't be a network for it to connect to.

We had one (probably intentionally lit) fire in the town next to mine this week. Luckily a passerby saw it, called the firefighters, and started putting it out with what resources they could and managed to get it out. Not a good omen for the coming fire season! I really feel for other places that have bad fires.

It does look like different seasons from the grass colours. Lots of countries claim to have many seasons in one day but we do have a lot of tourists (and locals too) who get caught out thinking that they are just going for a short summer hike only to have the weather close in as in the photos. If luck is on their side they get found in time..

American hens are not vaccinated against salmonella. Consequently runny eggs are not eaten there. They also wash them, which removes the protective coating of the shell making it porous, which means they have to keep them refrigerated.

Yolk color depends only on the carotenoids in the food the chickens eat. Corn for example gives a darker yolk. Since colors tending to orange are perceived as healthier, farmers add food coloring to what their chickens eat

I grew up on two different continents & a third subcontinent and I can safely say the USA’s egg game is weak. Not the sanitize & refrigerate vs unwashed with cuticle protection debate, but the general quality and the length of storage. We shouldn’t have to pay $10 for “fancy” eggs & those 6-month old Lucerne or Great Value shouldn’t be any different. Luckily in a lot of places, people have backyard hens and you can buy them day-fresh in your neighborhood. Or if you’re really lucky, can raise hens yourself. My four hens lay consistently year-round. Sofia, Dorothy, Rose & Blanche give us 28 amazing eggs per week.

It depends on what the chicken was fed. It influences the color. Just like when you eat beets, what comes out of you might be dark red.
