Nothing gives our brains the same kind of fireworks as watching creepy things. And if you’re not one of the horror aficionados it may be hard to understand the point of the thrill that horror gives.

But scientists say that the fright horror gives us while watching things like American Horror Story and The Walking Dead releases adrenaline, resulting in heightened sensations and surging energy. So biochemistry is to blame. And that thrill is so powerful, it’s often hard to look away.

This corner of Reddit known as “Interesting But Creepy” is a real treat for not just horror fans, but those who appreciate the darker side of our universe. The posts shared on the community range from interestingly weird to curiously macabre and they will surely give your heart rate the exercise it deserves! Psst! More creepy goodness awaits in our previous feature right here.

There's a Modern Family episode, where Phill does this (if I remember correctly, his dad used to do that and after his dad died, Phil did this).

Highly unlikely as they are extremely brief phenomena. You pretty much need a high speed, specialized camera to capture them. They are much, much briefer than lightning bolt flashes, and considerably dimmer too.

To find out why exactly so many of us are drawn to creepy things, from pictures to stories, both fictional and real, we spoke with Michael Grant Kellermeyer, the editor in chief of Oldstyle Tales Press, an independent publisher based in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The publishing house specializes in critical, annotated and illustrated editions of classic ghost stories, weird fiction, and gothic horror from the Classical Era of Supernatural Fiction (1795 - 1935).

According to Kellermeyer, human beings, especially in today's culture, have a love-hate relationship with mortality. “In one sense, Death and the dark side of life are our greatest enemies, but in another sense, it makes life delicious and potent: we are drawn to brushing elbows with death (either in reality - say, by skydiving or doing extreme sports - or by proxy - say, by reading or watching media about people who work in dangerous jobs or who survived disasters).”

An artist bought the rights to the color vantablack, iirc. So another artist made the world’s pinkest pink and made it available to everyone except him.

    RoseTheMad

Anish Kapoor is the artist, he got someone to buy the pink for him, dipped his finger in it, and gave the middle finger to the people who made the pinkest pink. (he's a c**t is Anish Kapoor, and tbh, his art/sculptures are utter shite) Thankfully, there are alternatives to vantablack, and MIT have created a black that is reportedly 10 TIMES darker than vantablack o.o

yes. "Vantablack is made from carbon nanotubes, which are tiny carbon cylinders with walls as thin as one atom. These structures absorb any light that touches the surface by trapping the photons until they are almost completely absorbed. This makes it confusing to look at, flattening 3D objects as flat, empty black blobs."

He explained further: “While in previous generations, death was ever-present - certainly not a good thing - 21st-century Westerners are much less likely to have ever seen a dead body (even the majority of funerals either tend to be cremations or closed-casket), so as much as we do not long for more death in our worlds, we do certainly have an obsession with this part of our existence which we are all fated to encounter, but which is so tidily hidden from us.”

This is Beautiful. I looked it up: Reaching sizes of at least 16 inches (40 cm), the Spanish dancer is the largest nudibranch and one of the largest sea slugs on the planet. Like most nudibranchs, the Spanish dancer is brightly colored and does not blend in well with its surroundings. This bright coloration, similar to that of the poison dart frogs and many other species, serves as a warning to potential predators that the Spanish dancer does not taste good and may even make a predator sick. https://oceana.org/marine-life/spanish-dancer/#:~:text=Reaching%20sizes%20of%20at%20least,in%20well%20with%20its%20surroundings.

Kellermeyer believes that as a result, “psychoanalytically, we try to touch hands with this stranger who is destined to make our acquaintance by poring over true crime podcasts, horror movies, and spooky artwork.”

The editor in chief added that “we love horror (which is by definition an artform concerned with the gradual approach of death, whether natural or supernatural) because it allows us to vicariously experience something that is so taboo in our culture, but which we all - at the final moment of our life - are destined to encounter.”

Well he had issues with Vitiligo. He had white pigment free blotches on his face and resorted to plastic surgery/bleaching. I feel like people don't know this.

I think, it's hard to predict how vitiligo would have affected him without the things he probably had done to mask it, like make up/procedures? It's easier to age up a person from an older photos, bonestructure/feature wise, than take into concern a progressing skin disease. It would be a shot in the dark from the person behind the ageprogressed picture? Just my thoughts..

Kellermeyer argues that a good, creepy story should leave a great deal to the imagination and should focus on insinuations which leave the imagination primed but wanting more.

So he gave one such example: “The great British horror writer M. R. James was a master of the chilling tease, knowing just what to expose in order to pique curiosity, but holding back enough that we can't get a good look. In a story called ‘Wailing Well,’ he has a shepherd describe a family of zombie-like ghosts to a group of boys: ‘Rags and bones, young gentlemen: all four of 'em: flutterin' rags and whity bones. It seemed to me as if I could hear 'em clackin' as they got along. Very slow they went, and lookin' from side to side.’ One of the boys asks what their faces looked like: ‘They hadn't much to call faces,’ said the shepherd, ‘but I could seem to see as they had teeth.’”

The key here is that we get a teasing taste that tells us something about their nature: “they aren't right - they're ragged and bony and move about in a wobbling, unstable manner,” Kellermeyer told us. Moreover, “they are malicious - they are clearly searching for something and while they have no faces to speak of, by God do they ever have teeth to tear with. A good horror story piques the imagination but lets it suffer in suspense,” he explained.

As a scholar of 19th and 20th-century horror, Kellermeyer can definitely say that the sources of collective fears are both basic and unchanging and very subject to fashion and the cultural moment. “All fears essentially boil down to four things: fear of losing control; fear of the beast within ourselves; fear of the beast in other people; fear of oblivion and mortality. But the way these fears take shape has changed: in Victorian literature a major source of fear was insanity or losing civility in some manner: become more animalistic.”

The editor in chief explained: “For instance, a truly chilling trope in Victorian literature was a ghostly man seen roaming the countryside without a hat or coat. This may seem silly to us, but to them - in a society where a sane, healthy man wouldn't be walking outside bareheaded in his shirtsleeves - the way that death has made this man's ghost so forlorn was truly frightening: his fate has left him vulnerable and stripped him of his propriety.”

You do realize that if they didn't drop the bombs the US would have had to carry out an invasion of Japan which would have led to hundreds of thousands of Japanese civilian and military deaths and would have also led to thousands of American military deaths? The bombs killed less than the event that they prevented, it definitely was horrible but don't act like it was the worst option out there.

Meanwhile, for his generation as an elder Millennial, it seemed like creepy kids were the be all, end all. “I actually am not wild about this trope (black-eyed kids, creepy dolls, scowling little girl ghosts, etc.) because it was just everywhere in the horror scene when I was growing up. But it did something very powerful for folks in the '90s and '00s and even the '10s,” Kellermeyer told us in an interview.

He also noticed that these days, it seems to be relationships that trigger us. “Families and couples (I think of Midsommar, Get Out, Hereditary, The Witch, The Conjuring, Haunting of Hill House, and It Follows),” he named a few. “I think our current cultural moment is very anxious about the intimacy of relationships like those between parents and children or between lovers: it can provide security and love, or it can be very much the opposite.”

I'd say this is the reflection from other lights, possibly street lights. You can see other specks of light in the bottom-right area of the building. But yes, very creepy.

That's Charity Hospital in New Orleans, right? My grandfather was a surgery graduate student there in 1940, and I interviewed for Tulane Medical School decades later. The hospital is still there and was infamous during Hurricane Katrina.

The girls names is Pernilla Beatrice she is a law student from Rome, Italy, suffers from an extreme case of corectopia, a condition which means her eye’s pupil has a distorted shape and is at the bottom of the iris instead of at its centre. She also said I learned to love my pupil, as weird as it might sound, I would never change it and I wouldn’t try to fix it with surgery, it’s part of me and it’s something that has been with me all my life.

The 2mg lethal dose is misleading as you're dealing with such small quantities that consistent lethality tests are extremely difficult to get. 2mg is based on fent. that was created in a legit pharmaceutical lab so is actually pure. Street available stuff is anything but. And then anyone already on painkillers of some kind or used to taking harder stuff will usually need more. Then you're also faced with the varying complexity of the human system, and all things being identical one person could get away with 5mg while another only 1mg.

    Everything is fascinating.

I don't really understand why drug dealers would want their customers to die. What incentive could they have to poison their customers?

    Scagsy
    Community Member
3 years ago (edited) Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

They don't want their customers to die, you are quite right. But each dealer will 'cut' the fentanyl with another substance to 'dilute' it and make it go further. From batch to batch and dealer to dealer the user has no way of knowing how pure or how 'cut' each batch is. Whilst they may be safe on 0.2mg from one batch or dealer, 0.2mg from another batch or dealer could be fatal. That's one of the main reasons that street drugs are so dangerous. You never know what you are going to get.

That seems Venera 12, which lasted at least 110 minutes working on the surface. Nothing on it really melted or crushed, as it was prepared to withstand the pressure and temperature. But after the coolant ran off, the electronics burnt out, as there's no electronic component that can withstand 450C while working. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Venera_12

where I live, there is always a boy standing in front of my fence. he was always dressed in black, but I never found the child and none of my neighbors knew anything about the child. Until recently, a neighbor of ours had just returned from his village and informed us that his son had been missing since 2014 due to an accident right on the highway in front of my house. Since then, our family has always prayed for the child when we saw the child standing in front of our fence

Too much effort to name it BP?? Butrón is a castle located in Gatika, in the province of Biscay, in northern Spain. It dates originally from the Middle Ages, although it owes its present appearance to an almost complete rebuilding begun by Francisco de Cubas in 1878. The castle has a fairy-tale look about it inspired by Bavarian castle models

He was flayed for converting the Armenian king to Christianity, which was outlawed at the time. Being a Saint, he was depicted in a few works, including a Michelangelo painting, but this 16th century statue is the most widely noted due to the insane detailing.

Those were invented much later. They won't be found in the Bible. Religions have all kinds of odd add-ons, like feudal ranks of angels, Easter bunnies, circles of Hell, and flying reindeer. Saints to intercede for you, because obviously God isn't going to pay attention to a commoner!

I believe that the bells were only used when the body was put in the casket and shortly when they were transferred into the ground. That's why you won't see graveyards with handles standing where a bell would have been. (However, some churches may have done it differently)

The Church is built on the teachings of Jesus, who says to turn the other cheek, to forgive, to show grace and compassion to those who persecute us. These are an abomination

The church celebrates a sky wizzard that supposedly eradicated most life on earth with a flood, disintegrated two towns for having too much fun, asked a follower of his to kill his son for shits and giggles and punishes all of womanhood because one of them once ate a piece of fruit. These cages are hardly the worst thing they ever did.

Why on Earth are the cages still hanging there? I could kinda understand putting them in a museum or something but wtf is up with taking out the bodies and leaving the cages?!

The idea behind that punishment is that the remains stay there, as a warning to others, until they're picked apart by scavengers/damaged by the elements enough to fall out. There's no proper burial.

Religion is a function of man, with all his weaknesses and foibles. God is not a function of man. Man has free will. God does not do these things, men do. All horrors are perpetrated by men and man is solely responsible for the things that are done.

To my knowledge (though as I've not actually been part of an active cremation yet, I just know how it works, my studies/work is more to do with preparing the bodies xP) in the UK, prosthetic limbs (such as legs) are sent to poorer/developing countries where they will be refitted/repurposed for someone in need over there. Inner implants like hip replacements may be recycled, used to make things like cars, or airplane parts, amazingly, or even recycled into a new implant. Things like pacemakers or internal medication pumps are removed before cremation however, as they can blow up in the furnace. And obviously, nobody wants that to happen. As for silicone implants like breast implants - they'll burn up.

I once had a tour at a facility that recycles crematorium scrap metal. Bins upon bins full of titanium hip implants, all shipped off to Rolls Royce who uses them to make jet engine fan blades.

If it's used on the outside of the body (feet, leg, hand) it's most often reused in poor countries, if it is inside (hips, knee joints etc) they are reused/reformed into plane parts mostly.

The thing about the Jaquet-Droz automata in comparison to earlier automata is that they were controlled by a changeable program rather than a single set of movement. In this, they are considered computer precursors. The Writing Boy in particular could pen custom letters.

I love that book! One of my favorites. If you haven’t read it, I recommend it! It’s about an orphaned boy who works in secret at a train station, and he finds a broken automaton with a little heart-shaped key hole, but no key, which he has to find. It’s an amazing story with really cool illustrations.

the shot wasn't any worse than a needle to me - what was in it though. a cholera shot hurt tremendously after the injection for quite a while. kinda' like a shingles shot now, but much worse. i got 5 in 30 seconds once - various stuff for going around the world.

But he thinks it's too bad to destroy them just like that. So he remove all the statues to his land. I could be wrong with the details though. Maybe you can Google for more accurate story lol ;)

NO, NOT ALWAYS. Because of the exposure time children were often braced in position so they would not move and therefore blur the image. The positioning of the wee girl does not indicate being dead either. More likely she’s as bored as heck and cross at being held in that position.
