I’m setting out to draw 1001 portraits of women around the world. On average it takes me two weeks to do one portrait, so it will take me around 40 years to complete altogether.

The inspiration behind the project is to raise awareness of sexual abuse. As this is something which happened to me in my past, I am passionate about changing the stigma associated with it by starting a conversation through art. I personally found that breaking my silence was not only incredibly empowering and healing, but it inspired others to do the same. So my project is about a chain reaction of inspiration, healing and empowerment to women all over the world.

As a way of funding my project, I am designing monthly colouring in images for my patrons on Patreon to take part in a monthly colouring in context. This geometricised appropriation of Boticelli’s Birth of Venus is this month’s contest image.

If you would know anyone who would like to be drawn and share their story of sexual abuse, please contact me on hiratsukaniki@gmail.com so I can arrange to meet up with you when I come to your country. I am currently in Hanoi, Vietnam!
