Leucos Wall Light is inspired by leucocytes, the human body’s white blood cells, the executors of the immune response.
The light shines through very thin porcelain pieces, joined and fired in ceramic kiln at very high temperature to achieve high translucency. This lighting design transcends art and design, combining handcrafting, storytelling about cells and functional design
Following my study about the true power of our human body’s white blood cells to heal and regenerate, I changed my husband’s lifestyle who was suffering with a terminal illness. This is when I learned that when we create the right environment, our cells thrive, protect and heal us.
This light design tells the story of healthy white blood cells and trust in our body, bringing awareness about our limitless power of the human body.
I also looked at the true nature of the material used – porcelain. It’s got plasticity to form undulations, high translucency when fired at 1260 degrees, high strength when the time at top temperature is prolonged, casting and assembling qualities.
Plaster moulds were first made to create the intricate textures of the cells.
The porcelain outer skin is left unglazed with no added chemicals to keep its natural composition. It houses a LED light sheet which consistently shines through the beautiful textured porcelain. This awakens and invites the user to get closer, to look, to wonder, to touch.
Each porcelain piece was made with no waste as the shape is controlled by rolling and pressing the porcelain onto the mould without cutting out a certain shape.
This light can be adapted to any interior, enlarged as a wall installation or reproduced to create a wall composition, organically, handcrafted with unique variations.
