As a child I lived close to the sea. Now I am an adult and no longer live near the sea I occasionally feel the need to go there.

The Dutch Wadden Sea is the closest to my home. It is not exactly a “real ocean” for it is just an intertidal zone. A shallow body of water with mudflats and wetlands.

But it has its own unique beauty and it satisfies my longing for the sea.

So about two years ago I decided to make this photo series here.

The camera I used was a homemade cardboard box with only a tiny little hole in it which is called a pinhole camera. I use 4 x 5 inch sheet film to capture the image. The size of the box is about the same size as the film I put in there.

When I first started this project I just wanted to capture the landscape but the images turned out to show my own feelings towards this landscape and my life in general.

This landscape makes me think about the transient nature of life and the the mystery of our existence.

So I started to make this ultra long exposures which are showing the path that the sun describes in the skye during that time. It is my attempt to get a grip on it all.

During the process I also started photographing myself and my 5 year old son and started to make double exposures.

Also a new type of sun path appeared in my images. Which I made by doing some light painting using the sun. I just moved the camera facing the sun for a few seconds after exposure.

I am trying to show a world in which expiring time is visual and connects with the unknown.
