After today’s Original Poster (OP) discovered her husband’s infidelity, her mother-in-law came around and offered unsolicited advice about saving the marriage. However, the OP asked her a question that left the mother-in-law stunned.

The OP shared that she married but discovered her husband had been unfaithful. While she was preparing to move out of the home owned by her mother-in-law who had previously offered cheap rent, the mother-in-law arrived uninvited. Rather than offering support, she urged the OP not to “give up so easily” and insisted she work through the marriage. In turn, the OP asked her mother-in-law how she had dealt with infidelity in her own marriage, specifically referencing an alleged affair from years earlier.
The mother-in-law denied knowing what she was talking about, became flustered, and left shortly after. The OP made sure to note that the story itself wasn’t true, but that she had made it up so her mother-in-law would leave her alone.. However, she heard that it caused a huge fight between her mother-in-law and the father-in-law.

I can't get on board with intentional lying about FIL having an affair because he deserved it for covering up his son's affair. If OP had said to MIL "did YOUR husband have an affair? Unless he did, you can't tell me how to handle the situation" that would be a completely different story. But just lying about it discredits OP in the scenario, because up to that moment she had done nothing wrong.

He covered up for son’s affairs, plural. I think it was kind of a mean thing to do to MiL (her sole crime seems to be that she sticks her nose into other peoples business), but FiL is hardly guiltless here. Helping someone to cheat is only a rung (or half a rung) below actually cheating. (And I’m suspicious of their “overnight” trips when his son clearly wasn’t there. What was FiL doing to pass the time?)
