Recently I was asked to install a concrete floor that looked like hardwood.

The whole project took me several days from start to finish. I first shot blasted the concrete to get a good surface profile for the cement to bond to. Shot blasting fires small metal pellets at the concrete to fracture the surface.

Using a trowel I then put a dark cement base coat down cover imperfections, and serve as the grout lines. I then used specialty fiber tape to shape the width and length of boards.

I then added a second cement coat on top of the basecoat and tape with a spray gun. I then used brushes, and trowels to create natural looking grain, knots, and nail holes.

The next step was to remove the tape and hand stain each board with an acrylic stain. By varying the color on each board I allowed the wood to have natural variations.

The final step was to topcoat the entire floor with an industrial grade epoxy to give a durable, glossy finish. The end result is a rustic faux wood floor that people simply won’t believe is concrete.
