Happy belated Mother’s Day!

For this Mother’s day I decided to travel 2,000 miles to visit my mother in beautiful Puerto Rico, known as “Isla de encanto” (Island of enchantment) or “espanto”(scary Island) as my mother likes to jokes around . The town that she lives in is named Lajas. It is also the town that I grew up and the place she was raised. I love Lajas, PR and always will. It was previously the known as the pineapple town and where the kite festival was held every year until they made a highway right through the open field where it took place.

My mother always thought me and my sister had artistic talent. She would encourage us and told us that we’d be artists when we grew up. Her life long dream is to fill her house with our art. Growing up we did just that, her walls are filled with oil pastel and acrylic paint drawings from the both of us through out the years. She didn’t have anything recent from me so as a gift I decided to make her a mural. I’ve made murals before for fun and professionally before this, like most things in life it’s not that hard once you understand what you want to make.

To make this mural:

1. Variety of paint brushes (At the least a thin brush for details and a flat brush to get the large areas)

2. A clean wall (Size doesn’t matter)

Paint (Once you figure what you want to paint buy colors that fit the image)

3. Reference Pictures (Print it out if you can it’ll make your life easier, I’ve also seen people use projectors on the wall)

4. A white pencil to mark the wall with your design. (You don’t need to draw everything out, just the tricker stuff, something you can just paint on organically, like leaves for example)

5. Two cups of water and disposable plates (one for white and another for colors)

6. Patience (Depending on your project it may take 1 hour to one day, take breaks, reflect on what your making and continue)

For my mother’s mural the main theme was the tree, we later added doves, daisies, lavender, tulips and butterflies. If I don’t count the breaks we took, this project took me about 5-6 hours.
