They are just transphobic but it doesn't seem like an issue to cis/straight people and I'm not sure how to explain it to them. But I have a feeling I'm going to have to try soon enough.

I’m curious, myself. My (half) brother is one of these people, and I’ve tried, to no avail. My best friend is non-binary and it pisses me off to no avail that he can’t just accept that nb people exist without saying “well then I can identify as a hippopotamus right”
He also says that referring to a trans person by their preferred pronouns in public is “lowering his intelligence”
As his kid grows up I’m gonna be the cool lesbian aunt who undos all his gross teachings.

I know that this was posted like half a year ago and you're probably not going to see this but a great way to show people how stupid those jokes are is by acting as though they aren't jokes at all. If someone tells you they identify as an attack helicopter put on a straight face, thank them for telling you, and politely ask what their pronouns are. This both confuses the perpetrator and shows them that their mockery won't garner any negative reaction from you.
