City Builds Tiny Village For Homeless Veterans With 50 Tiny Houses So They Could Live There For Free

The Veterans Community Project in Kansas City is taking serious steps to improve the lives of America’s war heroes. Thanks to generous donations from community members, they’ve built the Veterans Village, a collection of small houses that homeless veterans can live in for free.

The village includes 50 individual homes, each one about the size of a studio apartment. Occupants are provided with food and necessities, as well as a sense of privacy, security, and stability. A nearby community centre, still under construction, will host classes and counseling aimed at helping veterans readjust to their lives and cope with trauma.

The VCP is made up of self-described “veterans helping veterans”, and has spearheaded many projects combatting homelessness and neglect in veteran communities. Though not the first of its kind in the US, the concept of ‘tiny homes’ does make the Veterans Village a unique and economically smart place of refuge.

i can't understand why a country with such a big budget expense for military doesn't treat their veteran better.

In truth, tiny homes is the ideal solution. I'm 72, a veteran, and love the idea of a tiny home. There's less upkeep, less to move around within. But most importantly, its still your castle, regardless the size. Remember, homeless veterans suffer from depression, and are not thinking like we are. They need to have their privacy and ease of upkeep.

I know, I am young and ignorant, but America sends recruits to other countries that aren't as... "free" (emphasis on use of air quotes) and kills them because they live somewhere that isn't free? Or do they kill the extremist/crazy politicians there? I know I probably have it a*s-backwards, but can I have a little clarification?

It's difficult for me to understand that we spent billions to send these brave men to fight(apparently) for our country, but now that we are done with them we just don't care. The have sacrificed everything - mentally, emotionally and physically. The deserve the best care and rehabilitation program we can offer. We are trying to prevent war outside America- how can we do that when we have one going inside our country itself.

You know as the tiny house craze cools and many owners move back into bigger spaces, villages like this might be a really good use of the homes...give the former owner a huge tax deduction and transport the T.H. to a village to reuse in this way.

The main problem with these veteran programs are the veterans are not asked what their needs are, and those needs respected; instead the veterans are told what their needs are, and then mandated to one-size-fits-all group therapy nonsense, mandatory 12-step religious AA/NA cult treatment & indoctrination (responsible drinking is classified as full-blown street-gutter alcoholism needing lifetime treatment), forced "Jesus Saves" proselytizing, and prescribed handfuls of toxic Psycho-Wacko meds that melts their brains.

So many people atte flippant about all homeless. I believe unless we walked in their shoes we simple do not understand why each is in this position. These homes are functional and allow veterans to still have shelter, and socialization with other veterans, for some that might be the entire veterans community and others only their house mates. Without the chaos of "shelters" . And the added availability of training, counseling, etc. sounds like a win win. Let's please make this community the beginning of our communities kindness towards veterans. Maybe expand out to other communities for the general homeless community as Olympia did.

This is not housing, it's transitional with thousands of rules, restrictions, and stipulations. Support services onsite turns it into a prison-like insane asylum, with every aspect of the veteran's life monitored, analyzed, and ripped to shreds.
