Employee Saves Child From Kidnapper, Instead Of Promotion Gets This Letter Saying He’s Fired
2.1Mviews
This guy from Portland, Oregon just lost his job at Home Depot for violating company policy, which doesn’t sound like such a big deal until you realize that the reason he broke the rules was because he was stopping a child from getting kidnapped!
“At the time, the only thing I was thinking about was the child’s safety,” said 32-year-old Dillon Reagan, who had worked at the Mall 205 store for four years before he was bizarrely dismissed for his heroics. “I stepped outside and sure enough, there’s this lady who’s frantic and crying, ‘Somebody help me please! He’s stealing my kid, he’s kidnapping my child!’”
Reagan and a colleague called the police and then, on the advice of the dispatcher, they followed the man on foot until the police arrived. After giving their statements, Reagan said they returned to the store around 10 minutes later, but the next day he was surprised when his supervisor scolded him for “doing the wrong thing.” A month later the company fired him for breaking the company’s safety policy, and even though they’ve since reversed their decision (possibly in light of media attention), Reagan says he isn’t sure if he wants to reclaim his job given the unfair treatment he’s received. What would you do? Let us know in the comments below. (h/t: KGW)
This is Dillon Reagan. He recently stopped a child from getting kidnapped while he was at work
But instead of a promotion, his employer, Home Depot, dismissed him for violating company policy!
“I was fired for stopping a kidnapper from successfully abducting a child. FML,” he wrote on Facebook
Needless to say, he wasn’t the only person who was outraged by what had happened

Wow... what the fuck is happening in this country?!
The Trump Effect.
This has nothing to do with Trump wtf? This is a company issue not a political issue. IDIOT!!
Woah people... It'd probably help if the left and the right could at least be civil to each other despite of their differences in opinion :/
This has nothing to do with Donald Trump you stupid fuck.
why are the rabid anti-trump people so brain-dead? It really makes so sense
You blame Trump for your vibrator running out of batteries. Dems would have rewarded THE KIDNAPPER for his chikd rape "orientation"...
No, It's the Dumb Damien effect!! You're an IDIOT!!!!
Trump had nothing to do with this. Stop bein a fucking tool.
Your comment triggered so many rofl.
What does that even mean?
Liberalism is a mental disorder.
No, this isn't a Trumpism, its the ideas of our corporate America that produced Trump and Clinton in full swing. THIS is unbridled Capitalism folks. Having an employee at their station working is ore valuable to the company then saving a child. Therefore the company was displeased, and terminated the employee. The company put their bottom line OVER POLICE ORDERS and THE LIFE OF A CHILD. And Going to Lowes isn't going to make a difference, because they'd probably do the same thing.
Your comment triggered many rofl.
It seems none of these people commenting realize that the rest of the world thinks the USA is sinking fast, most countries I've been to don't like what trump stands for. It's just 50% of the country that supports him probably only has an HS education which is really sad because America's education system is garbage compared to the rest of the world, even lower than Russia. But good job USA, ya know, for voting in the Anti-Christ and what not.
I commented that I was going to look to see how many fools brought politics into this and look at this.. Didn't even have to scroll. What ignorance.
Trump effect? lol Joanne was right, it's the liberal effect since it has no common sense as to why this guy got fired.
No jackass....that would be the Obama effect. The Trump effect is him helping the kid.
They rescinded the termination, The Trump Effect™ in action.

Damien..you are a fucktard libturd. Donald Trump would fully support this guy fir his heroic actions. Barack Obama is the pussy who would be defending the kidnapper instead. I have heard countless liberals say that it's nit the perpetrator's fault because they had a hard life. What total BS!!

So this company's policy has changed in the last 6 months? What a ridiculous statement and even more ridiculous that people would up vote you. We truly are a divided and crazy nation.

you can easily see at the people who get more downvote are those who notice this as nothing to do with trump. it's sad to see that the more you are anti-trump the more don't have impartiality

Ah no, its called the liberal affect. Wanton disregard for anything that is the right thing to do. If a person does the right thing, the left hates them. Truth.
Yes he did a great thing and yes Home Depot was just covering its ass but That's what you get when no one takes responsibility for there actions all these people who have been suing the ass off each other for the past 15 years has caused this problem! If he'd have been shot or fell over himself cause he's a clutz it would be Home Depots fault, not his! Small business owners can relate to this I have to have/pay insurance in case someone falls over a milk crate whilst it's stacked outside in an ally awaiting collection!
True.
Home depot is one of the worst companies to work for. They pay their employees virtually nothing and only hire part time so they do not have to pay benefits like health insurance. They take complete advantage of desperate people. This guy should consider his firing a blessing because he will probably make more in unemployment checks while he looks for a more fair company
I don't think this kind of event is any more prevalent now than it was 5, 10, 20, 30, or 50 years ago. What has changed is that it's so much easier for stupidity to be shown up and for the arrogance and mindlessness to "go viral". We just hear about it more often.
Corporatocracy.
No man not only your country this damn whole world going bat shit crazy...
Stephanie, thanks for this comment. All the Trump-loving cockroaches came out of their dark intrawebz corners thanks to this comment. A lot of new people to add to my ignore list :)
Really Joanne? So racism, misogyny, homophobia and hatred for anyone that's not white and Christian (as your Republican Party is known for) is about "doing the right thing"? Yeah........ what planet are you living on?
@ blugeaqua: Republicans are not racists, misogynic, homophobic or filled with hatred. Indeed there are different points of view but your words are hateful to the extreme. Are there some that affiliate with conservatism? Of course. There some like this that affiliate with liberalism, as well. There is sufficient rabble with the political spectrum of any large group of people made up of ignorance and anger and frustration. Most mass killings, for example, are done by people of a liberal mindset. Should we label all liberals as dangerous nut jobs because of that statistical fact? I hope not. I'd like to think such things are an anomaly. Real change, however, comes from the even-headed of their respective group who calls for responsible, calm, less judgmental dialog. In other words, it starts within our own groups by people like you, for example. People willing to remain calm and open to all points of view equally and in a civilized fashion.
the dark side has gained control of the minds of the spiritually weakest.

Liberals at their best (which isnt much to look at all)
How the hell can one get fired for saving someone s life? So it's ok to put someone life in danger instead of saving them??
I'm guessing he left work to follow the kidnapper and didn't notify his supervisor. Taking off in the middle of your shift is usually a fire-able offense, but given the circumstances you'd think Home Depot would give this guy a break. Sad that his heroism was punished rather than rewarded.
And that's how corporations want us to be.. Unaware of others, uninterested, selfish poor souls. Divide and conquer. There's nothing worst for a corporation than a tight community where people cares and is involved into each other's life. The world is gonna be a very sad place in no time, mark my words
I don't get how he was fired tho!! He did the right thing and they fired him?! That's just cold
actually, it is in the contract you get when you get hired (I work at a grocery store and have the same rule), but I still completely disagree with it in a circumstance like this. I can understand if someone had robbed their establishment and them not wanting an employee to chance the thief. But a child's life was in danger and it's amazing they had the courage to go after them.
I don't get it, he followed Police instructions (like orders). Isn't it punishable if you do not follow them and the kid gets hurt? (Might be just my idea, don't know American laws that well)
Home depot should get sued for this outrage . They should naming him employed of the month for being a hero and saving that child's life
Jaclyn: Read the termination letter. It states "You were fired but not for conduct connected with work". Therefore he WASN'T fired for taking off without notifying his supervisor, as that WOULD be "conduct connected with work".
Sir, the woman is on fire, do i have your permission to try to save her life? No. Go on stacking the shelves...
They likely have a policy to not put themself in harms way with customers because if he would gotten hurt Home Depot would be resonable because he was the clock
You are right. Regardless of whether he gave his employer notice that he was leaving, he should never have been fired. This hero, probably didn't have time to notify his employer. In a situation like this, seconds count! Had he taken the time to notify Home Dept, he may have lost sight of the kidnapper, ad we would be talking a bout a child's death.. It seems Home Depot is really trying to sabotage its reputation. I am glad they are being hugely successful!
Yes, surely, but the notice doesn't say that he was fired because he failed to notify his supervisor. It says he was fired for helping saving the child.
Would be a very different story if they had a bad ending to this story, and had to explain why the child was not rescued. How does that stack up against telling your supervisor, who probably was nowhere in sight!
HD has a policy that says to not interfere with any crimes. Only designed Loss Prevention people can even approach a suspected shoplifter. Why are policies like this? The same people who say sue HD for this are the ones who would say sue HD if this guy got his ass kicked whiie on the clock trying to do the right thing. Yes he did a great thing, but his didn't follow protocol. As such there is a price to pay.
Isnt or a bit high?
It's nothing new. This sort of mindset is common at jobs. At my old drive thru job, I had a drunk man hurl himself out of his car window and climb through to try and hit me. I shut and locked the window on him and was written up for "ignoring a customers' needs." Another time I was written up for reporting a clearly drunk driver- with a car full of unbuckled toddlers- to the police after he almost drove into the side of the restaurant. "That is not your business." Another time the phone was snatched from my hand when I tried dialing the cops after a very abusive customer cornered me and threatened to beat me up. I was told to "just let people do whatever they want to you. You are not allowed to call for help, no matter what a customer is doing." I was too happy when I quit. NEVER EAT OR WORK AT STEAK N SHAKE, PEOPLE.
Not sure about the reasoning to fire him but they recently changed their mind and offered to rehire him.
Yeah, that makes everything go back to the status quo ante. Someone clearly was jsut following the letter of the Employee Handbook while totally ignoring the whole supposed concept of the company--to help people get things done. Some HR exec type(s) clearly didn't think this through. They won't be the ones punished, if any; based on my long-ago corporate experience, that "honor" will go to someone three levels down who doesn't have friends in the C-Suite.
He put himself at risk on Home Depot property as an agent of Home Depot. I can see their PoV but since everything turned out well I would've left it at "please be careful."
I wish i could respond to Melissa's response to your comment. But it's a huge liability for the employer if the employee decides to be a hero and fails while on the clock. The company is responsible for all their employees actions and consequences. If Dillon had hurt someone or damaged property while trying to save the child, the company would be liable for any and all expenses regardless of Dillon's intentions. Also, if Dillon himself had gotten hurt, the company again, would be liable for his medical and/or legal expenses because he was on the clock at the time of injury. Most companies encourage their workers to not try to be heroes if they can avoid it because of this. Don't get between two brawling customers if you're not security, don't try to stop the store from being robbed... These protect the employee from immediate harm and the company from legal vulnerabilities. Does this excuse Home Depot from firing their employee? NOPE. At worst, "please be careful" like Michael said.
Sort of stunned by this response. You can "see their pov"?? This guy literally saved a child from likely being raped and killed and you see their pov? I can't.
I think Shauday is pointing out why companies have policies like this. However, there is always the exception to the rule, and a smart company would have just let this slide. Sometimes you can win the battle and lose the war, and Home Depot lost the war on this one.
Well said Shauday. There are plenty of reasons why there is a code of conduct in any workplace. This was a dangerous situation. I just don't understand the mentality of corporations when things like this happen though. First - dude is a hero without a doubt Second - by all accounts, he did the RIGHT thing Third - policies are all about setting and enforcing precedents... as Home Depot, you have to ask yourself "what are the odds another employee will try to assist police in a kidnapping case, fail, get injured, and then sue us because we didn't reprimand this employee in this case"... Well, let's be honest... nearly 0%. Do the right thing HD!
He followed the police's orders. The police wanted him to follow the kidnapper so the kidnapper would not disappear. I repeat: he did what the police told him to do. So Home Depot is telling its employees to disobey the police? Got it.
It's worth it. He could have gotten hurt getting shopping carts too, or going to McDonald's on his break. Or going to bank to get change. I get telling your supervisor where you're going but come on, this was pretty time sensitive.
You can see their point of view. But, since everything turned out alright... Are you serious? You would only condone the saving of an innocent child's life if it didn't end up costing some huge corporation any money. What an extremely sad, moronic viewpoint. I hope NO child has ever needed your assistance! From your comment, you would simply let the child die, so you could make your boss happy... I cannot express the amount of disgust I feel for you and anyone that can even have the same thought processes you have! Im-Trying-...0341e9.jpg

Shauday Smith, Sol what you are saying is that company policy should trump being a good person?
Boy, Home Depot really stepped on its 'Johnson' this time. Had they made him into a hero, the PR value would have been priceless. This is just one more reason why I go to Lowes first, when I need something. They also love Charlie, and the employees say "Where's Charlie" when I don't bring him with me. I'm a huge Lowes Person. :D
Who is Charlie? I agree with you, you gotta wonder if the people at places like Home Depot or United have any common sense at all.
See my avatar? That's Charlie, my shih-tzu. He's been with me for quite a few years, and I take him to Lowes whenever I don't have to make other stops where Charlie is not allowed. There are so many people at Lowes who know Charlies name, its unbelievable. I think they know charlie, who's a real con artist, better than me. :D
Dude! Everyone knows Charlie! He's awesome!
His kid.
As many times as I have seen you make weird remarks John L through my time on BP. I have to agree with ya here. That is straight up HR crap
John, I work for Lowes here in FL and what a great company! Thank you for your loyalty.
Judy, I have learned that Lowes is primarily a home improvement business, and Home Depot is more contractor oriented. Lowes purposefully welcomes people's dogs, and even has several employees with special needs and their special dogs. They're family oriented and really go out of their way to welcome wives and children, two and four legged. I always go there first when I need something. Charlie is my Lowes unofficial mascot, so many employees welcome him all the time. This kind of attention to customer service will guarantee their continued success.
Love Lowes.I live in an old mobile home that needs lots of work and don't have a ton of money. In the last year alone they have: exchanged a water heater that froze without a receipt, talked me thru a dishwasher installation over the phone, delivered and installed a stove for free even though it was a couple bucks under the limit for that, and gave me $40 bucks off a toilet in a price match on an ad that didn't technically meet their requirements (no brand name in the ad). Called HD once to ask a question about something they advertised and got total attitude. Will be buying floor tiles in a couple weeks, not even going to bother looking anywhere else.
I bring my shih tzu with me everywhere too!! Pobby!! He is also well known in certain stores :D Shih tzu's are amazing creatures!!!
Taylor, when I take Charlie, I always place him in the baby seat of cart, and tell everyone that he is in his 'lemo'. He gets to sit up much higher, and the ladies and kids just love giving him all the attention he can handle. All I have to say is "Wanna Go Bye-Bye?" His ears perk up. Then I add, "Go To Lowes?" and he is at the door, dying to get out and head over there, so he can con more unsuspecting humans. Going to Lowes, and saying hello to the UPS man, when he comes by, are his two favorite pastimes.
John! That is too cute!! I tried that with Pobby once. He jumped out to walk next to me. He is a rather big tzu, 22lbs+. He's not fat... He was just born twice as large as the others! He is my service dog. He stays with me during seizures and helps me pick things up from the floor, especially things I tend to drop like my keys, a shirt while changing, hair clips etc. He's a good boy. I think he just wants to be of help and being in the cart restricts him from doing anything (he gets treats for all acts of service, hehe). I have another tzu Nikola, whom i refer to as "boopy", and he is more inclined to be a passenger :} They are my children, as I cannot have any people children lol.
Home Depot NEVER has anything in Stock to begin with and after reading this Lowes has my $$$
Lowes didn't apply my screen door right, eventually, mold started growing and we had to redo our basement 6 times on top of that got my mom really sick. So now my parents live in different houses :l
I hope you sued! Good luck with everything!
A www!
If there was a Lowe's nearby maybe they could offer him a job. Would be great PR for them....'heroes are welcomed and appreciated here at Lowe's' kinda thing....
That would be GREAT.
his boss should be fired!
Home Depot killed my nephew. Kenny Young was working at HD in Cheyenne WY and had a heart attack. They did not call 911, as is their policy. A relative had to arrive to come and drive him to ER. Had he gotten care sooner, he could have been saved. So don't have an emergency at HD, or need the police, or expect to be treated with dignity as an employee. Fie on Home Depot!
I am so sorry for your loss. I can't believe they would refuse to help an employee in an obvious medical emergency! Just... wtf?! The fact that they would rather let someone die than have an ambulance called to their property... that's the most heartless thing I've heard in a long time.
So what kind of business that HD is running? Are they selling something, or what???
Donna is correct. I worked at HD for 3 years. Colleague fell off a ladder and hurt his back - his wife had to pick him up and take him to the ER.
Same with 84 Lumber! I will never shop either outlet again; EVER!
I think there has to be more to your story. Like the story above, appears you are only telling one side. Would live to know the rest of the story , etc.
Doubtful. Having worked in and been a manager in restaurants, retail, cinema, and other customer service establishments, I can tell you the corporate rules are specifically strict on these things. That said, as one of the employees at a theatre once said, "F*ck that. I'm a trained paramedic and I'm not gonna just let somebody die. I'll clock out and perform CPR and clock back in if I have to." I prefer to think enough people have courage to break rules that are immoral and unethical like that. The company cares more that the dude having a heart attack might die despite your CPR and the company be sued over his death. I understand why the policy is written because corporations are heartless, self-preserving machines that have teams of lawyers who care nothing or individual humans and their lives. It's a bullshit policy and I would never fire someone for breaking the rule. But I find it sadly easy to imagine a work environment of fear that stayed anyone around from helping.
It's super easy to paint Home Depot as a villain, but really most chain stores do not provide their management with enough training. They put emphasis on black and white rules rather than independent thought. This could have been any chain store with a bad manager.
This was not the manager's doing. Do not blame them. This was a corporate decision based on proposed liability.
unfortunately a lot of big businesses have policies like this, they're more worried about covering their asses than anything
Stille20: Yes, it is easy to paint Home Depot as the villain. If you know anything about liability coverage for a business, you also know that there is ALWAYS a clause to absolve the company of responsibility of liability, if the employee does something unscheduled, or is not physically on company property when injured! Yes, Home Depot was wrong. It is ABSOLUTELY obvious, that Home Depot would rather have a child die, than have one of their employees voluntarily help that child! Blame the manager, blame corporate, it doesn't matter who is responsible at this point. That is damage control for Home Depot to do. There is no need to paint Home depot as a villain, they adopted the role...
Did the co-worker get fired too?
All the time I wanted to ask the same question!
HD already said they "reversed their decision" after a "review of the situation". In other words, they got caught so they had to backtrack for damage control. Mr. Reagan has said he doesn't feel like working for them anymore. Can't say I blame him, but I hope he's had other job offers.
What sucks is that a public offer of employment means that his benefits will be rescinded whether or not he takes the job, unless the state somehow categorizes it as a dangerous or hostile (discriminatory) workplace. So I hope this story gets him a good offer.
It is hilarious that they reversed their decision, after the media reported on this story. You are right they got caught publicly! I vote we rename Home Depot to "Home Despot"
So, The Home Depot did a dirty move and when they got people attention, they just try to fix it? I wonder how many times this happened before to people without Social Network knowledge OR before Facebook. You can't fix this by giving back a job. They should do a charity or something.
A lot. Back in the eighties there was a stream of convenience store robberies. People were getting fired for giving the money to the robbers
"you assisted the police in preventing a kidnapping" which is soooo obviously the wrong thing to do... Are those people for real?? I would definitely not go back to work there.
I am perplexed that any police Dept would ask an unarmed, untrained citizen in danger by asking him to follow a drunk and violent criminal. Who would we have held accountable if he had been hurt or injured?
You can assist the police without them asking. He probably got on the horn with 911 and took off after the guy in his car because he'd be less noticable then a police officer's vehicle tailing you....you tend to brush off non-descript vehicles going the same way you are.
How could any employer get it so wrong? Handed a perfect opportunity to praise a selfless and life saving act by an employee, boosting company moral and positive media/public perception, they treat the employees as a villain, and fire him! Boycott this company, money seems to be the only thing they value.
Boycott this company, money seems to be the only thing they value.
Boycott this company, money seems to be the only thing they value. (I don't know why we're echoing Sara's last sentence, but I wanted to be a cool kid too.)
Sara, before you decide the employer 'got it so wrong', here's some other possible scenarios- #1. the (unidentified) lady crying for help is NOT the child's legal guardian, and the employee is now neck-deep in an emotionally charged domestic/custody dispute that turns deadly. #2. the kidnapper realizes he's being followed and injures/kills the child and/or attacks and injures/kills the employee. If you reward Dillon, you've incentivezed other employees to get involved in situations that may not turn out as well as this one...
Well considering thatevery 40 seconds a child goes missing or gets abducted and 20 percent of all abductions lead in Victim death and it happens within the first 3 hrs....I'd take the risk and follow. The kid has a higher survival chance with a non officer following then an officer following. They see a cop that kid is definitely dead.
Another reason why corporations are NOT people. What a bunch of dumb asses!
more like soulless machines, they have no ethics, no humanity left in them only greedy
I hate home depot they definitely had some managers that are really idiots. Least her in Az. I took my measuring tape, set it down after measuring some molding and it got stolen 5 mins later when I came back. No biggie my fault, so I bought a new one. The next day I came back to buy the molding. Well my measuring tape set off the alarm. The guy at the front proceeds to humiliate me that I stole the tape. I did explain I bough it the night before. he said that was impossible as it would not set off the alarm. I told him most likely the cashier didn't remove the theft thingy. Nope he kept it after customer were now seeing a scene. I kept my cool and told him I live 2 blocks and when I get back with the receipt I want an equally public apology. Came back and he refused !

What does this have to do with the story? Just looking for your 5 minutes of fame?
It's the nature of a great human being to step in and help like that, especially a child. I understand how companies have rules to...
... prevent liability, but this is an act that shouldn't be punished, him doing the right thing for a child in danger. He's a hero.
Actually, it's just the nature of a human being. Which doesn't have to be "great". Just plain human.
Ok Home Depot has just gone to the top my list of companies to never do business with.
lmao bullshit
Wow. Just wow. That man deserves a freaking medal! Heck he saved a LIFE there! God damn what is wrong with this world??
shame on home depot.
No good excuse, but they allready reacted, cause of the brewing sh*t storm.. 1231-595e6...c16daa.jpg
i'd be like "oh that's cute. no, i want a mangers salary"
You see 'merica, this is one of the many reasons why us Europeans lough our asses off at you. In Europe the employees would have kicked the shit out of the kidnapper until the cops arrived and they would have been commended for it. In your country, land of the free & home of the brave, this shit happens. Go Murrica, go!
About twenty years ago, I was working at a public library with a boss who was a huge stickler for the chain of command. Me and another librarian witnessed a woman repeatedly abusing her child. We followed the rules and told our supervisor who contacted the people over her head who said it wasn't our business. We couldn't accept this. The other librarian's mother worked for child services, so we called her mom. We fully expected to lose our jobs over it, but were merely scolded instead. I still believe we did the right thing. Bureaucracy be damned.
Daycare owner refused to report possible sexual abuse of 4 yo. I was 24, teacher, went to payphone to report. Abuse confirmed. I quit.
I have a 6 year old girl if she was getting kid napped and a store employee told me it was against policy to help fire would rain
I would like to think you would be the one calling the police/chasing after the kidnapper, not expecting others to do it?
O dont worry part of the rain o fire would me chasing someone down like a bat outta hell but some help would certainly be appreciated
United, Home Depot...does anyone at these companies bother to think?
This guy shouldn't accept their offer to return to work. Corporate only reversed their decision because of the negative social media publicity. Most likely, they've issued orders to the store manager to "ride this guy like a rented mule" if he comes back to work; in other words, every little mistake he makes will result in a write-up. This way, they'll have a "legitimate" reason to fire him in a short while. Or they'll pull a "bait and switch" with his schedule. The schedule will show him off on, say, Tuesday. He'll work Monday, take Tuesday off, and return for his shift on Wednesday. That's when he'll be fired for being a "no call, no show" on Tuesday, with the manager pointing out that the schedule showed he was to be at work on Tuesday. He'd have to prove it was changed without his knowledge, and that's difficult to do. I know; it happened to me once.
The problem is that once an offer of legitimate employment is made, you lose your benefits if you decline the work. There are sometimes exceptions for an unsafe or hostile workplace; I don't know Oregon labor law well but he may have a claim. You are absolutely right about the devious abuse they can and will concoct. Companies don't take kindly to this kind of thing and would prefer to punish and discredit any offenders.
A lot of states would question why the same company is all of a sudden offering the same job at the same location that they fired him from.
I work for these pathetic POS's. Their management is simply the worst I have ever seen in my life.
FU*K Home DEPOT....I quit shopping there 17 years ago.. Even though I live 2 miles away I drive another 5 mile to go to Menards.....besides Home Depot is going under anyway. I'd be surprised if they are still in business in 3 to 4 years. I worked there back in 1999 and quit 5 months later its a terrible environment anyway.
What morons work there I ask? And I wouldn't take the job back if they offered now anyway, go f*** yourself Home Depot and pray to God nothing ever happens to your kids and maybe some 'hero' won't bother as well as it's against the stupid policy. Wth is going on in that country? Wow.
what happened? has home depot answered about this? has a lawyer seen his case?
Yeah SusanS, take your meds XD
SusanS, please calm down. There's no need to get angry :)

Well Wanda, first you call me out, THEN you can't comprehend what you read, realize you were WRONG and you still find cause to be angry with me? PATHETIC! You are truly pathetic. LEARN TO READ ALL THE WORDS.
Susan, Take your meds. Comments don't seem as stupid when I take my meds. I'm much more rational. Much less pissy.

Did you READ any of the words above the pictures??????? The answer is THERE!
FML I see it now, but I still don't understand why you had to be so pissy about it.
Well, angry Susan, I did READ the post above and I don't see where Adriana's question was answered, nor do I see a reply from Home Depot or an update. So....relax.
America.. the home of the brave and the land of the free... Oh wait... :'(
Bloody hell! What wrong with thew US??? Are they ****ing out of their minds!???
In any situation, the one certainty is that someone in HR will be a prick.
HR is full of people who majored in nothing degrees like Communications and drank through college, then schmoozed and networked their way into a M-F office gig. From there, they make simple-minded and ignorant policy and decisions.
He should have gotten a medal for being a hero, how sad HD did not value a child's life over their stupid policy.
Bottom line - Home Depot is not a very good company to work for. Their stores are dirty and many of the products they sell, even though have main brand names are of poor quality.
There is something wrong with a company that expects its employees to do the wrong thing for the sake of the almighty dollar. You can bet if it had been one of their wives with their children they would want someone to step in and protect their child! I will take my business to Menards.
This has nothing to do with the almighty $. These policies are in place to keep employees safe. I seriously question the actions of a police dispatcher to asked/ordered an untrained, unarmed citizen into an unknown situation. Who would we be blaming if the kids actions had caused injury or death to himself or the child?
If the child had died the store might have been sued, and blame is exactly the problem. People are paralyzed or discouraged from doing the ethical thing because the legal thing stands in the way. The police probably qualified any instructions to follow at a safe distance without being noticed or engaging. Unfortunately, kidnapping cases, especially when the child knows the culprit, can very quickly become untraceable and it's the first 24 hours that are critical. By keeping an eye on the location of the victim, he prevented this from becoming a wild hunt. The mother would not have been the ideal choice to follow as keeping calm and making reasoned decisions would be difficult, but also because the kidnapper recognizes her and following anonymously wouldn't be feasible. The truth is, the manager usually has discretion here and I've never seen a single employee manual where this was listed as an immediate termination offense, even in pages and addenda of safety training.
Uh dunno about you but I'd still blame the kidnapper. Kid wouldn't get hurt or die if the kidnapper didn't start the whole thing and then hurt or kill the kid.
Everything corporate does is about the almighty dollar. If the worker had gotten hurt, corporate would have been expected to shell out money. The corporate suits don't ever want to spend money on the workers, no matter why. If they could force us to work for free (looking at you states that are trying to lower your minimum wages), they would. Heaven forefend there should be something more important than rich monsters getting richer, such as a child being rescued.
I would most certainly step in for that child and protecting them no matter what. There is something wrong with people and a company that thinks the safety of children should be ignored or disregarded for the sake of the almighty dollar and because their insurance won't cover an employee who is actually doing the right thing. You can bet if it was their kid they would want someone to step in and do the right thing!
That's outrageous! You are heroes
When you Finally realize Profit is more than Life and you are part of this broken World :D
It makes it hurt to breathe sometimes. And it is sad because there are no new frontiers, nowhere to go to just check out of the profit machine and eat off the land like we're evolved to do. It's also weird that all this wealth and profit is purely theoretical, represented on paper and bytes with no real backing resource, assigned value only by virtue of society accepting the terms. There are many more without than with, yet we all submit to this corrupt and unnatural state.
What does this have to do with post?
I don't even understand their frame of thinking... I REALLY want to know Home Depot's side of the story. How on earth did they come up with this illogical decision in the first place????
Companies usually have a policy in place requiring their employees avoid engaging in any sort of confrontation on company property. New employees are told to do things like hand over the money if being robbed because if he had been hurt during any of this, he would have been eligible for worker's comp, which is expensive for employers. Alternatively, he could have sued for damages since it would have happened on their property. Either of those are bad news for employers money-wise, so they would much rather let the robber take the money from the till or, evidently, let a child be kidnapped. Both of those are much less expensive than paying worker's comp or legal fees.
Interesting, thanks for reply, super insightful. I feel like this should have been included in the article... Still sad though, that a saving a child's life is considered "too expensive" by the employers.
This is all a concern, and when a robbery is happening the employee safety is definitely first and foremost, but in cases like this one what the company REALLY fears is liability for consequences of the crime. If the child were killed, the family could turn around and sue Home Depot for the employee's participation, making a claim that it contributed to the result. It's very hard to disprove what might have happened without the employee helping the child, and juries are (rightfully) sympathetic in these situations. It's why many places won't even give you a bandaid if you ask. It becomes a liability issue for stupid reasons when you claim you had an allergic reaction to the adhesive and now you have phantom burning on your hand that never goes away and is ruining your life, and now the company is paying out $5.6 million in damages for slapping a bandaid on your tiny abrasion. It's sad that human lives are worthless. The manager should have exercised discretion here, too.
I have discovered another level of hate I never new I had
Reaaaally hope that this is a fake... firing somone for caring about another human being and protecting someone's life would be terribly stupid, mean and immoral. I wouldn't think much of the guy/girl who sign those two men and even less of the one who fired them.
Someone had a bad day and think it's OK to agress people? SusanS, you should try to apply to yourself your "LEARN TO READ ALL THE WORDS" because, sweety, we read all the post. We understand all the words.Thank you for your concern. We're even having a civilised discussion between educated adults about this post. Maybe you should try not to rage for nothing, it's bad for your heart.
Many retailers have rules against engaging to prevent or stop a crime. Liability etc. I call 911, report crime/accident, take chances w mgt.

Umm. They were both making a general comment. READ Susan, don't just glance at the comments and go off half-cocked in comments
Home Depot?? Really dude? Well it is a huge corporation after all and this makes me so happy that I shop at Ace Hardware instead. I'd rather go with a smaller company with heart then this faceless and rude corporation!
I don't like Home Depot or Lowes or any other "big box" hardware store. I try to use my local "mom & pop" lumber yard if I need lumber or hardware.
We have a lot of those here and I love them. It might be 10% more to shop at them but it is a better experience and good for the community. ACE, TruValue, McClendon'a are locally owned here, so we have options. I remember in Iowa there was a place in many small towns called Benjamin Franklin's, I think, which was a hardware/general store. They always had cool stuff. I've found lumber to be harder, though...the big stuff sometimes isn't carried at all the local shops.
I am not one to jump on the "boycott so and so" bandwagon, but after reading this, I seriously would not shop at Home Depot again. Regardless of policy, common sense and common decency should prevail. This supervisor has neither and he is the one that should have been fired.
so in their eyes (home deport) it's more important to do your shift instead of saving someone's life?! is greed all they can think about!?! bastards, i hope their business goes under
Unbelievable!!!! I cannot believe this BS! He should be commended, not fired. What is wrong with Home Depot. Breaking store rules trumps saving a child's life anyplace/anytime. This wonderful young man and his colleague will have great KARMA for saving this child. Screw Home Depot!!!
Not surprised they did this. I was harassed by day workers in their parking lot. When I complained to HD I was advised the security they have is primarily for their carts. How about a news agency getting through to corporate and embarrassing the hell out of them and forcing them to apologize to this man, and also chaning their stupid policy.
Home Depot is not a very decent company. Their stores are dirty and the majority of their products are of low quality.
The supervisor who scolded him needs to go back for retraining
That is B.S. !! I have to agree with everyone else , get the media involved . What HD done to you was completely and totally wrong !! You saved this childs life with your heroic action . Hold your head high and know that you were right in what you done , HD was wrong . As far as them offering you your job back , I'd tell them to kiss my ass !!!!!
Home Depot, not my choice. Lowes is now my choice.
They rescinded the termination. He had been reprimanded earlier that month for arguing with a coworker.
That would work. Except he shared the letter from the Oregon State Employment office. Which states the reason for the firing is "He helped the police in a kidnapping". As in HD told them that was the reason. THey also reversed when this became public.
Wtf?! The letter actually states, you were fired for ASSISTING the police in Preventing a KIDNAPPING!! UnF*ckingBelievable!
customer service is more important than regulations shame on you home depot!
He done what he thought was right and saved a kid from a perv and yet the owners of the company think is ok for to sack a person for doing the right think, I wonder what the owners would have done if it was one of there kids who was being kidnapped and they just let the person get on with it, I bet there would be a lot of shit hitting the fan .
At the point of the epistle that is written the reason they fired him is just... I don't know.. At least RIDICULOUS AND GROTESQUE!!
I used to work for Home Depot and it's true. During employee orientation we were all strictly warned that if we step in to prevent or stop a crime from happening, it will result in termination. This includes anything from shoplifting to a robbery at gunpoint. They claim that it puts the company and all employees at risk when someone tries to be a hero and stop someone from committing a crime. It's a shitty policy, really.
First off let me say Thank you Dillion for what you did. As a mother and grandmother it is heart breaking to hear of a child being taking from their family by a stranger. So again I say Thank you and God will bless you. Home depot should be ashamed of themselves. They will prosecute someone for stealing out of their store, but will fire someone for helping an innocent child. This is crazy to think that a building material has more value then a life. I think I will be shopping at Lowes.
I can't help wondering if the supervisor who "scolded him for doing the wrong thing" has been fired. That would be a condition for me if I were to consider returning to a shit company like that.
Hero!!!
...maybe starting a good "shame on you" campaign could be a good thing ...
Home Depot Cutomer Care policy - Oh im sorry, i cant help you out of the Store cuz they gonna Fire me ASAP - When you finally realize Profit is more than Life :D
Good thing Lowes is in the same town now....
Home Depot keeps plenty of employees on their payroll who go out of their way to avoid helping customers, or just don't have any idea what products they carry or where they are located, but employees stop a kidnapper from taking a child and you fire them? Good job HD.
Probably had something to do with going off-site while on the clock or something dumb like that
What a fucked up world, assisting the kidnapper would got him a raise I suppose!!
How can you get fired for doing a good deed? If I was this guy I would have went straight to the BBB I'm sure he has and I'm sure he's got grounds to sue them for wrongful termination of employment inadvertently the Home Depot might have just made him rich what a stupid move done by a stupid company
wow...
ivett cser good
Take your job back until you find another one. Don't "cut off your nose to spite your face" as my parents used to say...
so I hope that corporate ended up firing that manager. You can't put this on corporate, this was a call made by a local store manager. F that guy
That is why I don't buy from Home Depot anymore, this isn't the first time they have treated their employees badly in any part of the country. I go elsewhere and will continue to do so.
Why doesn't this surprise me? They treat their employees just as badly as they do their customers. Worst customer service ever! Can't believe these chuckleheads even allowed this to happen -- it takes a special kind of stupid to fire a hero.
You are a good person and good things will come to you. Keep your head up and keep doing the right thing
Because big companies can be sued so easily, their insurance companies dictate that policy as their premiums would be higher if employees were allowed to pursue errant customers. In the company the past the errant customers have successfully sued the companies. I may be a liberal but I am in favor of tort reform.
They probably thought it was so,e sort of elaborate plan to rob the store of very expensive tools which happens ALOT. Something just isn't adding up. Why wouldn't the mom try stop the kidnapper or call the police? Where is the letter saying he is fired, that's not it. Did the person trying to abduct a child get caught? He should've if the kid was rescued and they followed the perpetrator afterwards. This story is so so extremely odd and lacking details, it's almost hard to believe. Why would Home Depot want this type of negative publicity? I don't know what to truly believe anymore. B Bob
It's all about money.... these companies are so scared stiff about a potential lawsuit because an employee got hurt that they would sacrifice the life of a child to protect their bottom line..... disgusting
apply at the police dept they need good people like you home depo ill never step inside one your stories again
I often shopped there. Never again.
Accept their apology, AND request that they show you and your co-worker as heroes. All customers will be happy to know that people like you work at Home Depot. Maybe you get lucky and get a well deserved raise as well.
I'd sue Home Depot for unjustified termination of employment. If anything Dillion and his co-worker deserve a huge thank you from the company for being a shining light in a dark situation. Home Depot don't deserve my patronage....Look out Lowes you're about to get shit tons of business LOL
I GUESS HOME DEPOT WOULD OF LIKED IT BETTER IF THAT LITTLE BABY WOULD OF GONE WITH THE KIDNAPPER AND GOD NO TELLING WHAT WOULD OF HAPPENED BUT HOME DEPOT HAS A POLICY DONT SAVE KIDS THAT R GETTING KID NAPPED. WOW HOW SHAMEFUL...LOWES HERE I COME AND LETTING MY FRIENDS AND FAMILY KNOW ABOUT HOME DEPOT.
This is so typical of a company like this I think Home Depot is a subsidiary of Walmart I could be wrong but it is Walmart's policy to not be a hero and also never stop the customer regardless of what they're doing even if they're trying to steal because that violates the don't be a hero policy and of course they're going to go ahead and include this situation even though somebody else's wife was it steak and that is so freaking typical of a big corporate entity where they don't give a crap about you you are nothing but a number. F u, #HomeDepot. I know one thing for sure and that is it seems like every crappy story I've ever read about a hardware store has always been a Home Depot and since they seem to like to blatantly disrespect veterans and elderly people and fire their employees for saving children we're just going to go ahead and never ever shop at Home Depot ever again
Home Depot is the worst employer I have ever had. This dude can do better.
Booooo, Home Depot!!!! After reading this you can count on me and my entire family to NEVER shop there again. This is terrible PR work.
Forget Home Depot, Dillon. What you did was absolutely priceless. Well done!!!
I also live in Portland....This guy was a hero... but if he doesnt accept the job back, he is an asshole. There are too many of us out her who have had HELL getting a job... You had no problem with HD BEFORE this incident,... why now?? Keep the job.... THEN SUE THEM!!! P.S. Home Depot will NEVER get my business again!
Hey i'll just spend my money at Lowes as everyone else reading this article should do.
What's confusing me is that it says "This WAS NOT a willful or wantonly negligent violation of the standards of behavior an employer has the right to expect of an employee." Well if it WAS NOT a violation of the standards of behavior why would they fire him?
Well, I guess all the fence boards we just bought from HD here in PA are going right back to the store. I'll go to Lowes instead.
Not surprised by this at all. Spent nearly 15 years with HD and I could tell some stories about unfair treatment and terminations.
happened in oregon.....a pedo state...i can promise you that home depot in oregon is protecting pedophiles.
never should have happened
SHOULD NEVER HAD BEEN FIRED
I understand a company has rules and regulations..and blah, blah, blah..but , you have got to be kidding me, your company could fire a young man for saving a child's life. who ever made this decision..bravo to you for waking up that morning and eating one to many stupid pills...i hope he dont return to your company, you dont deserve a person like that working for you...Shame on you Home Depot...
I used to exclusively shop home depot because of their excellent customer service, which is exemplified by what this man did. Now, I'll think twice . Home Depot doesn't deserve my business. They may as well put a sign on their door "Crime welcome here without consequences."
I think Home Depot sucks. I think anyone who stops a kidnapping from happening should be commended not fired. I have been warned by HD employees that they are a sucky company to work for and to avoid them. I also find the store itself to be a pain because they are so cheap they have two or three floorwalkers to handle the entire store. When you need assistance, you have to roam all over looking for an employee. This employee who saved a child should be awarded a medal. I would not go back to Home Depot either. I would hire in at Lowes.
I think some SMART manager should go out of his/her way to find this guy and HIRE HIM!!
Was the Co-worker fired too?
Was your co-worker fired also?
I've already vowed never to shop there again. Terrible customer service. I always go to Lowe's. This is a prime example of the company's service. I wouldn't take my job back if I were him.
Dillon you should sue for lost wages and since you are uncomfortable to return to such a cold company possibly 10-15yrs lost wages as well. Good luck either way young fella. Good on you. What's right is right keep on being gold
HD was already on my boycott list and they been sending me offers trying to woo me. That does it ! Sure the HD owners are pizza party pedo's themselves and pissed them off he botched a child snatch ! Done with home depot and off to Lowes !
Already have HD on my boycotting list and they keep sending me offers trying to woo me and THIS zips it. The higher ups are probably pizza party types and he botched a snatch and pedo's will not have that without retribution. Done Home depot and off to Lowes.
All these big corp. think their employees are just robots. Good for this guy! If he was My son I would be sooo proud! By the way, he did EVERYTHING RIGHT! called the cops, did what they said and not more than directed. Home Depot should have given him a raise and more. I hope someone else with a soul gives him a better job! He is too good for HD!!!
Well, it's Home Depot, hardly the career loss of the century and although I'm not entirely sure of their salary, I'm pretty sure their pay scale won't be much more than the minimum wage. Seriously, I would tell them where to poke their job, preferably where the sun doesn't shine. Jobs like that are two a penny to be honest and not worth the worry of being fired from.
A friend of mine was fired by HD (with a notation that prevented her from ever working at a HD again) after she told her boss she was relocating to another city and had been hired by a HD there. The offense? She had come into work, on her own time, on a Saturday to assist one of her customers.
I shop at Menard's anyhow, they have way more to offer than Home Depot and often at better prices. So fuck Home Dipshit.
i think that store should be ashamed of they self give this man back his job with a raise for their wrong in firing him this man did what many more people should do and saved a childs life ask that store person who fired him if it was his or her kid what would they want to see happen and i bet they respond with they would want some one to help them i say folks stop going to their store to shop show them who really matters in life and it aint about their money or job
Hero=Fired. SMH. I'm pretty impressed he's been with them for 4 years. I made it 8 months and found most of them hell. They had a policy that all part-time workers had to work a minimum of 4 hours on Sat AND Sun every weekend. No vacation available. No employee discount either, except 1 weekend per year before Christmas. Looking back, I'm surprised I stayed as long as I did.
I smell bullshit.
I am just astounded that they would fire this man for this reason and even more surprised that it took public outrage to make them see it was wrong. They don't deserve to have him back there and I am sure he will many job offers to choose from. Now on to see how many fools had to bring politics into this for no other reason, but pure ignorance.
really unfair!if i had a company i would offer him a job, a person like that is an asset for any company! But i'm not surprised...people are sick. One time i saw a 2?year old, alone in front of a great commercial center, i waited near him 5minutes and he was really alone so i took him be the hand inside the mall to call security for an announcement. Then his mother ran off me, screaming and yelling at the poor kid for following me.i told her it was very dangerous to leave him alone in front of the mall like that, not a "thank you": "i was taking my car!" "and then you leave your little boy alone more that 5 minutes with crowd?".this would never stop me from acting, i hope that this won't stop this guy too, people are sick!
but he did what the dispatcher told him to do
I don't care if they did reverse their decision, I won't shop there again. Hello, Lowe's! ;-)
I'm never shopping at Home Depot again.
Absolutely going to Freidmann's from now on. No more Home Depot. Nice, going, you profit-minded chimpanzees ......
Screw Home Depot, Lowes is better anyway.
The "Dumb Heapo" only caters to construction workers any , every one else gets bad treatment, Lowes has ALWAYS treated me great.
http://www.snopes.com/man-fired-stop-kidnapping/ he was fired for leaving the store during his shift, however after the outrage the company offered him his job back as well as back pay
Maybe, he got fired because of the fact he left the store unattended. Putting the company property at risk is a reason to engage a disciplinary. On the other hand, the company in question should messure the circumstances and should think about the fact of loosing a Human life or company prop.
Lowes has the same no follow out the door policy. I don't or hope they wouldn't have gone as far as home depot, since the police told this guy to follow the kidnapper. Someone that owns a business out there needs to give this man a job....he has common sense which is lacking in most anymore!
I worked at a large retail chain in college, and the company policy in the case of a "Code Adam" (a missing child) was not to interfere. We all had "stations" to go to if a code was called, but if we saw someone taking a child we were to remember all details possible but to not try and stop anything. The idea was we would have no idea if the person had a weapon on them, and our attempt at interfering could cause the kidnapper to lash out and harm the child. I'm not saying I agree, but this was the company policy
Next time he'll follow store policy on child abductions per the CBL's...Should have been terminated the same say as per the Class "A" violation of store policy.
Well, I am not in the U.S., but really think that this should get as much news space as can be given. Boycot the store in question show them that its not acceptable whats happend, make it hurt where it hurts most their daily sales, I'm sure you have plenty of other stores that sell the sam e merchandise as this one.
Well, this is a bomb! I understand why he will not accept this job back, its kind of disgrace that the company is applying rules even in case of emergency! Will they fire people in case they will leave their places due to a bomb attack?
Unfortunately, many people think that the government (and every other aspect of life) should be run like a corporation, with rules like this.
The wording of the letter of dismissal by Home Depot doesn't even make sense--it boils down to "While we don't object to your assistance in helping prevent the kidnapping, and it doesn't violate any company policy, we're firing you for doing it anyway."
I was one of the best employees The Home Depot ever had. This is typical. They ignore their ethics code that is imprinted on the apron. It's a corporation now and not the same as when Arthur and Bernie, the founders, once ran it. They put children with no experience in management positions and if they do not like you, they will create a hostile working environment and will target you for termination of employment and they will lie to do it. They throw away so much money in the garden department you would be shocked. They simply do not care. They become bureaucratic which is described in the Founders book ...Built From Scratch on page 139. I lived and breathed The Home Depot. Guess I outshined the others a little too much. Oh well. I'm proud of the accomplishments I made helping every customer I could with a genuine smile. It's a shame that those in higher positions really don't care what The Home Depot is becoming.
I think the supervisor who fired him should be fired and made an example of. Very disgraceful. He should sue them for wrongful dismissal.
If he was fired then good because Home depot is one of the worst companies to work for. They pay their employees absolute s**t and only part time so they don't have to pay for health insurance. Basically it's a company that takes advantage of desperate people and treats them like they are in the military. DO NOT work for this company, if you do QUIT, you are being taken advantage of.
Dear Home Depot. You took a month to think about this before you fired him. Reversing your decision now does not help you. I guess I won't be seeing you around much longer. Good riddance.
Um, wait. Isn't this part of the Code Adam. Which will have all associates require to go to exits and no one with a child may exit? This is how it was when I worked for Home Depot. Just looking at the letter they wrote I am appalled at what they said. Yes, we are not to put ourselves or anyone into danger but again, he was doing what also he was advised by the 911 dispatch. Yes, I would be very worried about going back to a job if that is how it will be.
Most stores will tell you to NOT to get involved. This is a company policy due to insurance reasons. And most will say you will be fired if you do. HOWEVER...the police instructed them to follow, it should have been waived in this case.
If I were this young man, I would either stay another year, until vested in the company, which usually happens at five years. Otherwise, from the letter they gave him, it was not a discharge for misconduct connected with the work and he is eligible for unemployment. He should claim unemployment until he finds another job, and judging from these circumstances, it should not be long before he finds another job. The reason HD let him go is, most companies have a rule not to confront shoplifters, etc., because you don't know what someone who is cornered will do, and companies have had employees killed doing the "right" thing, and he did the right thing. He did the good person thing. He won't be unemployed long.
And this is why I have cut up all my home depot cards. A child gets kidnapped on your premises and you fire the employee for working with the police a saving this child's life? That alone says it all about your company, and with what it says I do not want to be a part of. We all see where your priorities lie. Disgusting!
Just one MORE reason I prefer Lowe's. (They actually have much better selection in everything, btw)
Maybe, the home depot personnel who wants him fired is in cahoots with that manager.
For following the instructions given by the police dispatcher, he was fored? Just wow.
If company fires someone for stupid reasons, then it's good that you got fired. Who would want to work for dumb asses like that anyway. But I would fight what I am entitled to for an unlawful dismissal. No matter what, if somebody needs help like this, you help. I am sure there will be laws now to protect employees from abuse like this.
This article has no details whatsoever. Doesn't even explain how he "saved" the child. All it says is he followed the guy on foot until police arrived. So the police saved the child, right? Also doesn't explain what rules he supposedly broke. Nothing it really explained. This is poor journalism.
The supervisor scolded him for 'doing the wrong thing'--wow HD, way to screw the pooch. Actually he did the right thing, because he was following the instructions of the police, that's what every citizen is supposed to do in an emergency. Yeah, they are gonna regret this, big time.
I would insist that the supervisor be terminated before I even thought about going back or I would sue for wrongful termination.
Better not give his job away,, because he WILL be back first thing in the morning! If not, he has the right to sue Home Depot for everything, and win!
THE WORLD IS FUBAR
Most big stores have a policy like this. Wall Mart does too. Employees are not to interact with customers or situations when police or medical rescue is needed ......in case they screw up and die or kill someone then "the company" is not liable.
WHAT?!?! This heroic man saved a GIRL!!! And he's being fired for it?!?!
Is there a follow up to this story?
Home Depot should be ashamed, the man did what was morally right and a child was saved.
