Definitely when I had a dream and someone made me fall into a bottomless pit. Turns out, I was actually screaming and crying out loud, because my parents ran up to comfort me.

I was 12. My little sister was 2. We had a mother that would sometimes flip out and have violent, screaming rages. I heard Mom shouting and came down the hall to find my Mom violently shaking my little sister. Even at 12, I knew the danger. I grabbed one of my sister's arms, my mom had the other. I yelled, "Stop it, you're going to k**l her." Bravest thing I ever did. My mom looked up from my sister to me, and I'd never seen such a look of hatred. I remember being very calm, and accepting the fact that I was going to die. At least my sister would be okay. Then my mom let go of my sister, went into her bedroom and locked the door. She didn't come out for hours, and that was a good thing. I calmed my sister down as best I could, and made sure she wasn't hurt. I didn't realize until decades later that my very kind father had no idea any of this was going on. A*****e parents can be very sneaky. Dad knew she had a temper, but not how violent she could be. I wondered for a long time why he didn't do anything to stop her before I realized he didn't know. And if kids are afraid of a parent, they often don't speak out for fear of repercussions.

This happened in the 70s. I found out much later that my dad did consider divorcing my mom, but back then women almost always got custody and men hardly got to see their kids. Dad loved us to pieces. He didn't want to be separated from us. Thank goodness for that, because if he had left, I'm not sure we would have survived.
