I start so many books but I haven't finished one for years...

You can start by figuring out the idea or the topic you want to write about, then figuring out the characters, then start writing.

Know the end of the story before you start writing the beginning.

This really depends on what type of person you are:

A) Start writing and keep going. Some people just need to continue and continue and will finally reach a point where it just flows. They develop characters and the plot via the writing process, not knowing where they'll end but someday they'll reach the ending. Or:

B) Make a plan (either in mind or written down): Know the aim and ending, think about some key scenes, think about your characters, have a plan with a "golden thread" (in Germany we say "red thread", so I hope I found the right English term).

Thing is, it really depends on what type of person you are. I pretty much started as type A and developed to type B. I have seven finished volumes of my novel and the eighth in progress.

You'll figure it out someday. Just keep trying. And even if you don't finish your books, have in mind that you develop something precious every time you sit down and write.

WRITE WITH SOMEONE ELSE. This is very good, because sometimes they can come up with ideas that you can't, or vise versa
