As a novice photographer, approximately 10 years ago I had the opportunity to capture an incredible image of a tree surrounded by dark-colored lava rocks on the Big Island of Hawaii. While recently editing my old image, I chose not to use AI but rather a traditional method of photography editing. This decision was based on my personal preference and artistic vision for the image.

Many photographers today are turning to AI tools and software to enhance their images. These tools can offer incredible results, such as enhancing colors and details, removing unwanted objects, and even adding or removing people from a scene. However, there is often a fear that AI is taking over the creative process, and that it will soon replace traditional photography altogether.

While it’s true that AI tools are becoming more advanced and accessible, there is no need to fear them. In fact, traditional photography has always used multiple tools and techniques to alter images. For example, photographers have been using filters, adjusting exposure and contrast, and even manually retouching images for decades.

Furthermore, there is no one “right” way to edit an image. Every photographer has their own unique style and approach, and this is what makes photography such a diverse and interesting art form. Some photographers may prefer the precision and control of AI tools, while others may prefer the more organic and intuitive process of traditional editing.

In my case, I chose to use traditional methods of editing for my image of the tree and lava rocks. I adjusted the exposure and contrast to bring out the details in the tree and rocks, and I added a subtle vignette to draw the viewer’s eye towards the center of the image. These techniques allowed me to create the exact look and feel that I wanted for the final image.

However, this is not to say that AI tools are not valuable or useful. In fact, I often use AI tools for other types of photography, such as portrait or product photography. These tools can help save time and offer a level of precision that may be difficult to achieve manually.

In conclusion, photographers should not be afraid of using AI as a form of art. While traditional methods of editing will always have a place in photography, there is no reason to avoid using AI tools if they can help achieve your creative vision. The most important thing is to experiment and find the tools and techniques that work best for your unique style and approach.
