When I was sleeping rough and battling extreme PTSD I couldn't believe how few people stopped to ask if I needed help when I was crying. Most assume you're a drug addict. Thousands of people would walk by. One lady threw a bag of rotten cherries at me. All I wanted was to feel safe. P.s. I am now in government housing. It's like heaven to me. Thanks for caring Diane.

It's not some people but MOST people on the streets have mental health issues.

I previously worked at a homeless shelter and they NEVER turn anyone away EVER (unless they are violent of course but then police are called). They would either find another spot for them at another shelter and keep them until that spot was available - or they would take up every square inch of space possible to accommodate. If that means on floors, in the kitchens, in meeting rooms, so be it - but just felt the need to say something! From Ottawa, Ontario.

In fact, they don't always. Some won't stay in shelters because the shelters often have rules about drinking and drugs. Got no idea about this poor soul, of course.

Unfortunately, there are safety issues. Public buildings always have a max number of people allowed inside at one time.

So they can provide for as many people as they can.

I was homeless at 20 due to my mental health. I stayed in hostels until a council flat was available. They are busy, dangerous, dirty places but better than sleeping rough. There's things I do now with my son that could help people if you don't have room or are worried about potentially dangerous people in your home. You could buy a bunch of cheap thick socks, gloves and hats and give them out or cook up a load of stew or pasties, pop them into disposable cups or tin foil and deliver hot meals to people.

Bedbugs are horrendous, I still have scarring from them. Shelters are terrifying if not managed well. I once had to stop a methhead from killing a support worker. I was stolen from in every single refuge. The streets were scary but if u could find a safe spot (usually on a rooftop or at train station) and sleep during the day you just walk all night. I'm still regaining myself. I had very little dignity left. But I look back and feel so bloody proud of myself.

OR BEING BEATEN OR RAPED.....MY EX SISTER-IN-LAW HAD TO STAY AT A SHELTER. AS SHE WAS LYING ON THE FLOOR HAVING A SEIZURE, SOMEONE WAS RIPPING HER OFF, STOLE ALL OF WHAT LITTLE SHE HAD, INCLUDING HER MEDICATION. IT IS SUCH A HORRIBLE SITUATION THAT PEOPLE WOULD RATHER LIVE OUT ON THE STREETS THAN DEAL WITH SHELTERS.

And assaults. I had to run away from two shelters when homeless. :(

Ok - so it is safer to leave a person who could be dead on a bench?? rather than call for assistance - or just take a photo???

Got to remember also - people on the streets in these conditions are unlikely to have a phone, means for contacting anyone or being contacted. Taking someone in for a few hours, a look online and a few phone calls on their behalf could achieve so much.

I have many times called for help when I see someone passed out or sleeping in poor weather. Most people would just drive/ walk past.
