Q: First let me ask the question we are all thinking. Why sliced? You were doing so well as a solid loaf.
A: I think every so often you have to reinvent yourself. And I don’t mean completely change who you are, rather become a better version of yourself. Ask, how can I make a difference in the world? How can I be of more use? Like, I didn’t wake up one day and say I’m going to be a banana. I’m still bread; just sliced. I’m more useful, I made a difference in the world and that’s how I “reinvented” myself.

Q: Incredible. And how has becoming a standard for something that is great changed your life?

A: I think as you become successful you can’t get a hot head about it. There’s a level of humility you have to find. Yes, I’m the standard to qualify a good invention,” the greatest thing since sliced bread.” However, I know my purpose in this world, I’m not a god because I’m successful. At the end of the day I am an ingredient. I’m just one part or two parts of a sandwich, depending if you are going with open faced or traditional.

Q: Last question, with success and reinvention sometimes there is backlash, what we call “haters”, how to you handle that?

A: You can’t be all things to all people. Some people won’t like you personally or what you’re doing for various reasons. I realized, I have to be okay with myself and my vision. I found others who share that vision and I never forget my purpose. Some people don’t like bread, they prefer lettuce wraps…I’m fine with that. I’m sliced bread and others out there need me.

Well thank you for that insight on success and the reinvention of the self. That’s Food For Thought.
