I Made A Harry Potter Monopoly Board For My Best Friend’s Birthday

My friend really wanted a Harry Potter monopoly board – but sadly they do not exist. So I made one!
I spent 80+ hours on the board layout, the cards, and all the extra details. I’m so happy with the final product though!
Starting with the final product: board and all the pieces
Mirror image print – creating the board layout was difficult, but also fun to create my own properties
Lay out a layer of polycrylic, lay down the paper, allow to dry, and rub away the paper. It leaves the ink behind
Finished the rubbing with some woodburned edges
Adding the center image and burning the card spaces
An (incomplete) photo of the properties – front and back
Railroads turned to Transportation Methods of the Wizard Community and I turned utilities to newspapers
Charms=Chance, Potions=Community Chess
I used Disney Monopoly pieces and a little spray paint for the houses/hotels
Instead of paper money, I used the Wizard coins of knuts, sickles, and galleons; but with my own variation. I changed the values to simply 10, 50, and 100 values instead
I bought a poker case to hold the money and the cards, tokens, and pieces
I printed out Monopoly Rules (slight HP Variation of course) for the top. Gold spray paint on some wood dividers completed it. (She’s a Gryffindor, hence the color scheme).

With another image of the Gringotts logo on the case and I’m all done

Ty Duffie um maybe you should look up exactly what kickstarter actually does :) The company's stated mission is to "help bring creative projects to life" They don't sell, they help create. the backers sell not them. No one can get sued for putting this on kickstarter because if a project is copyright protected then kickstarter will not allow the project. If it is not copyright protected, which according to the copyright laws its not to a point. there is 4 things that maybe copyright protected. ( hotels/houses and gringotts & leaky Cauldron picture). after fixing those 4 things He may get backers and before it goes up for mass production kickstarter and the backers get permission from whom ever they need to if they need to. There is no profit until the sell of the completed project. Heck he could put this on kickstarter they don't allow it but like his work and he gets backers to create different games.
I don't know why there's not a reply option under Kem Wills' comment but I will reply here. If you would have followed the line of conversation then you would have understood that LD Beatty's comment was in reference to Kjorn's suggestion to go on kickstarter which WOULD be actions of gaining profit off of this clever idea.
Oh Bother. Anyone can make a monopoly game so long as they don't gain a profit out of it. There is nothing on here stating for sale.

Fan art done for personal pleasure to make a profit will expose the fan to the risk of suits. There is NO Harry Potter Monopoly. AND there is no profit being gained with this Monopoly. it is for personal use. You have to be careful because of your business. I believe that gains PROFIT. :)
I'm guessing this was made for personal use only. If the author was to try and market it, or put it on Kickstarter, there's a very good chance they could be sued for copyright infringement. Now that that's out of the way, I gotta say, this was incredible! Nicely done!

The legal complications of just posting the pics are mind baffling. I really love what has been done but it really is a legal minefield crossing lots of different companies (Disney, WB, Waddingtons to name a few) Good luck

It is absolutely brilliantly done BUT the Harry Potter stuff is trademarked, both by JK Rowling and Warner Brothers and as such you aren't allowed to use it in your work. You have to be very careful when using images and concepts which aren't original.
He is not selling this and this item was made for his personal use... it is like someone telling me I can't paint anything that's trademarked and hang it on my wall etc etc. I hope you can understand what my point is. On the other hand if he started a mass business selling those monopoly using the name "Harry Potter" or anything else that is already trademarked by the HP series, then yeah he would certainly get into some serious trouble.
In truth if you paint something from a photograph or image originally created by someone else you are infringing the copyright they have.The name Monopoly, and the associated graphics and text are also copyright. I come to this from the other side of the argument, I have had issues with people reproducing my work without asking or obtaining permission. My work as an artist is 100% original and part of my business is the promise to my clients that I will never create prints or reproductions of my work. I have to advertise what I do to generate business, but because my business is images I am vulnerable to being ripped off, both by individuals and by larger companies who bend the rules by adding a few points of difference. Spare a thought for the people who have the original ideas.
