Achievement By Proxy: Children Being Forced To Enter Beauty Pageants By Their Parents

The inspiration for my set of images is based upon Achievement by Proxy Distortion, in this case children are being forced to enter beauty pageants, commonly by their mothers.

Although these children may enjoy competing in the pageants, they unfortunately don’t know what it’s like to live the life of a normal child. The media contributes to the negative influences put on the mothers of children competing in beauty pageants, the children themselves and other kids who watch these shows.

Shows, such as Toddlers And Tiaras, could result in low self-esteem and disorders such as body dysmorphia. Mothers may see the show and wish to enter their children into pageants similar to those shown on television. These pageants are more common in America, in comparison to the rest of the world, with over 250,000 children competing annually.

Pageantry has changed over the years; nowadays, it demands that children look like dolls. They are required to wear heavy makeup and clothing that is deemed by many people inappropriate for children. Therefore, I decided to create this series of photos.

They shouldn't force their child to enter if they don't want to. it's not always about the looks.

I didn't get it. I'm thinking you really have something intense you want to get across. Wish I understood.

I think that the idea you're portraying is sincere, but at first glance the portraits look like those of cancer patients. (sorry)

I think they're interesting photographs but the theme doesn't come through on it's own.
