Cordel and woodcut are two typical arts of northeast Brazil. The string traditional poetry and singing rhymes are published in small books and illustrated by Woodcuts is a traditional printing technique of images and texts too, which is used as an array wood. This wood matrix is hand-carved with a cutting tool for this office. Where the craftsman carves wood in high parts that receive the ink will print the image and text on paper.
The Woodcut arrives on Brazilian soil brought by the Portuguese during the reign of Dom João VI who moved with his court from Portugal to Brazil fleeing from Napoleonic invasion.
In Brazil the first engravers spread by Brazilian cities, but is in the northeast that today this type of art is still maintained.
The first booklet printed line, or earlier, that we know is authored by Leandro Gomes de Barros – 1865-1918).
This is one more tip that I give on art produced in northeastern Brazil where the talents of various artists, many anonymous, helped keep this art out of wood for printing thousands of booklets with very peculiar and funny stories.
