2. For example, if you say "transgender people have a higher rate of drug abuse", you're not in the company of transphobes for stating a fact. If you use it in the context to portray trans people as "low life junkies", then you obviously are. But you could as well use it to say "the oppression of trans people cause anxiety and depression which is self medicated using drugs". Then you're probably very against transphobes and want trans people to be treated better. Context matters, you're not in the company of bigots unless you say bigoted things. At least that's what I think.

To be fair, by that logic you're putting yourself in bad company by using guilt by association. Saying one thing that a lot of bad people are saying doesn't put you in the same company, nor does it mean you are saying the thing for the same reasons. If it's implied it is, that's guilt by association.

I agree that there are a lot of things that should be addressed so people who actually care get the chance to think about their words better. But I still get the feeling that a lot of people still enjoy drama and make mountains out of molehills to make it the hill they die on.
