Artist Colorizes Old Black & White Photos Making History Come To Life (71 Pics)
When we think of the past, we often think of it in black and white. After all, most historical photos that we've seen from the first half of the 20th Century are in monochrome, and because of this, it's easy to forget that color actually existed back then.
Thanks to photo restoration artist Marina Amaral however, we can now view history through a whole new lens with these stunning colorized vintage photography shots. Combining her fascination with history and her interest in Photoshop, Marina brings the black and white photos of the past to life in a new and colorful way. The effect creates a more intimate portrayal of history and allows a contemporary audience to connect to the past more deeply and emotionally.
As the artist notes on her website, "When we look at an old photo in color, we can easily have the feeling that we are living that moment again." Take a look at the beautiful pictures below to see just what she means.

Where is the bruising? Actual color photos from that day show a puffy, swollen black eye (left) and redness on the scratch above the right eye. You can see the texture of these injuries in the black and white photo, but they are not colored in.

I am wondering how the original colours were determined? Image #16 for instance. Maybe the women's coats were greys rather than the array of colours shown

Each photo is made to be realistic by recognizing the value behind each image, respecting and preserving their stories, paying attention to the finer details and maintaining the original essence in each one. Every completed work has gone through long and in depth research, and is supported by the opinions of experts in each particular area if necessary, to faithfully reproduce the original colors and atmosphere.

Although the black and white originals have value, they tend to be overlooked by the modern viewer. By putting colour to them makes them more interesting. A lot of time and research must have gone into this project.
