In a grey morning, a few dozen fishermen arising from the small village of “Meia-Praia”, located on the edge amount of the dunes of the beach of the same name, resume a traditional fishing gear: Chinchorro.
according to the oldest, until the last century, it was quite common to see this fishing method, sometimes nicknamed Xávega art in long beach of Lagos bay. Now this art almost disappeared throughout the all Algarve.
Immortalized in the music of “Zeca Afonso” and according to my friend “Joe Bala”, fisherman, happens once or twice year pro, a kind of celebration between friends.
It all starts with the wooden vessel, which is pushed through wood logs until you reach the sea. After mounting the network device that comprises two legs, wings or wing, a bag (where the fish is caught) and two hauling cables.
The unit is taken out to sea by boat, and moves to the distance consented by the same, leaving land of the cables. After wide, the vessel returns the second cable to the ground, so you can make the hauling, which must be synchronized, dragging the net to the beach. In the end, when the network is already on the beach, women arrive with boxes to make the choice and fish division.
And this is divided by shares by all who participated, and the master of the vessel is entitled to a majority.
On this day, the fish was little, but remains the stories, ties and friendships that are built through small cultural moments.

Silhouettes of men pulling cables on the beach.

In each wings, every fisherman pulls part of the cable attached to a body strap.

Two man in each wing collect the cables that the others bring. It´s necessary to avoid knots or other messy confusions on the device.
