Anxiety disorders plague greater than one in four teens between the ages of 13 and 18, and a number of them are treated with antidepressants and other drugs to try to help them live a relatively healthy youth. But a group of researchers from the University of Cincinnati set out to explore other treatment options which concentrate more on the brain and not as much on pharmaceutical solutions.

Their research, printed in the Journal of Child and Adolescent Psychopharmacology, recruited nine participants who were diagnosed with anxiety disorders between 9 and 16 years old. These conditions included generalized, societal, and separation anxiety disorder in addition to having a parent with bipolar disorder. Over the course of 12 weeks, each participant underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scans while they practiced mindfulness-based cognitive treatment, a broad assortment of theraputic techiniques which include yoga, meditation, and learning how to pay nonjudgmental attention to somebody’s life.
