People Donate $30k To Send This Target Employee On Vacation After Entitled Customer Calls The Police On Her
Everyone who’s worked in retail knows how tragically wrong the saying “the customer is always right” can be, but also knows that you usually have to stick to it anyway or get in trouble, with 27% of retail workers saying they would tell customers to treat them with respect if they didn’t feel like there would be negative consequences. Last week, in a rare occurrence, a Target employee was vindicated when one entitled customer tried to take his case to Twitter and got firmly told that he had chosen the wrong hill to die on.
The customer, who is verified by Twitter as a journalist but was apparently seriously lacking in reading comprehension that day, interpreted a placeholder price sticker on the piece of plastic used to display a top-of-the-line electric toothbrush as the price of the product. The unimpressed employee he went to with the discrepancy wasn’t having any of it, even as he snapped a picture of her and got the police involved. Speaking up about the situation on Twitter didn’t help his cause either, as the community firmly took the side of the employee and even decided she deserved a vacation just for dealing with him.

Commenters stated that the dissatisfied customer wouldn’t have much legal ground to stand on by arguing that the electric toothbrush, which usually runs between $90 and $150, was on sale for a single cent. While some guessed that it was an obvious misprint, others with retail experience pointed out that what he (and the equally unobservant police he claims to have as witnesses) was seeing was a sticker placed on the plastic display to keep track of shelf space in the store’s system.

But it doesn’t end there! The community of Twitter thought the poor employee who had to deal with his nonsense deserved a vacation for all that, leading someone to start a GoFundMe that has racked up almost $30,000 just over the weekend.
The person who started the GoFundMe and the Target employee herself confirmed that the account had been transferred to her. While one Twitter user commented that it was great to see so many people of differing political views showing support for the worker (a conservative meme page started the fundraiser,) that might present a dilemma for Tori, who is contemplating where to donate the money rather than putting it all away for herself.

Most of the time, the police document what both sides said and, if he demanded a copy for court, they would tell him he can have one. They're not taking sides, just doing their job, and he's presented it as them taking his side.

the irony in this is the price technically isnt an error. its a tag for the display item. that price isnt the price of the item, its just there as a place holder so the rest of the information could be printed. this is why the "customer is always right" concept needs to be done away with. no, the customer is not always right, sometimes the customer is a complete dumbass. also, shame those cops for not seeing how stupid this guy is. 20 30 years ago sure you might see penny CANDIES, but nothing beyond that has ever been worth a penny. if you see something priced at a penny you should use common sense to realize its not the price of the item. i hope this twit was banned from that target, cause no joke if it was my store i would have banned him.

The tag fell off the sleeve into my hand; it wasn't even attached properly. I refused to ring it up and the customer ran off and got the manager. The manager told me to ring the coat up for one dollar.

If you are in the US, go to any local store that sells any kind of electronic product with a display model. Look at the display model, you will most likely find a tag just like this with a similar tag on it and a .01 cent price, along with the exact words on the tag shown "DISPLAY". The price wasn't for the product, it was a stock-keeping tag for the display (non-working) model.

We can take it off the shop floor. And if it was a mistake or a scam, they won't find another one at the same low low price, so they can whistle for it.
As someone who has worked retail it is not uncommon for displays to be marked either as $0.01 OR as DNI (do not inventory) depending on the company. The tag clearly says DISPLAY and the fact that he called the cops over a freaking toothbrush shows a level of entitlement that unfortunately is getting worse every year.

Preferably, retail employees should be trained on the laws that pertain to such issues, so that they can educate customers. What should never have happened, was trying to publicize the identity and shame an employee. That is petty and ridiculous and completely unnecessary.
