I agree that people are too keen to call anything cultural appropriation, when in fact cultures have always interacted and mixed. But one should also be aware of the significance and meaning any given item of dress or tradition has to the culture it came from should be given the proper respect. Kimonos and western-style clothes are just that - clothes. A war bonnet is sacred to Native Americans and we should respect their wish not to wear it as a prop.

Not quite. Cultural borrowing is fine for food and fashion. Cultural appropriation is NOT fine for articles and practices that have vast spiritual and cultural significance to an ethnic group. The war bonnet is not a fashion statement. That is how it was explained to me by my Cree mother-in-law. The war bonnet is also not a "lost tradition". If you aren't Native and have not been given a war bonnet by a tribal chief and elders for your deeds, you don't get to wear one. Let's not minimalize bad behaviour where it's present. This is gross, and it needs to stop.

How about just don't wear one? How about that? How about do your best to NOT continuously justify to other cultures your misguided need to appropriate whatever you feel like? You also didn't address my question. Is it ok to wear a fake Medal of Honor? It's not real, so that's ok right? It doesn't dishonor those that earned a real Medal of Honor right?

I hope you're not falling into the trope of white people telling minorities what they can and can't appropriate. Hate it as much as you want, it doesn't really change that it's cultural appropriation. The war bonnet is a pretty sacred object reserved for those that have earned it. NOT for party people riding metal horse sculptures. Would you feel the same way if people went around wearing fake Medals of Honor?

Then you get into -who has earned the right to wear an Aztec ornament - who is allowed to wear leather Navjo articles - can you wear a feather in your hair - or 2 feathers - how many attacking white men did the Indian braves have to fightl to wear 3 feathers. A WarBonnet is amazing - and I personally would love to see a real one one and touch it - those are replicas - no more real than Davy Crockets axes at $3.99

A genuine War Bonnet shouldnot be used as a toy - or a dressing-up item - it is indeed sacred and deserves respect and should only be used and worn by the descendants of the original brave owner

The fact that you think it's being "PC" tells me you either don't know, are willfully ignorant, or you just don't care. I hope you read into what a war bonnet represents and change your perspective.

I think it's probably all three. For every thing you do, you'll find somebody who's offended by it - often on behalf of other people.
