New York City is a photographer’s dream: it has many iconic locations with serendipitous opportunities around every corner. At the same time, it has been photographed to the nth degree by so many artists that it can seem daunting to find your own vision and voice as a photographer. When I walked around the streets of New York with my camera last year, I noticed that a certain area had lost power. Instead of people getting upset, they were talking with their neighbours, sharing stories and smiling with one another. This experience gave birth to my “Mysteries of New York” series of day-to-night transformation type photos. My thematic intention was to show serene but hauntingly beautiful blackout-like scenes in various transitons that tap into the emotional experiences of many who can appreciate how such moments can offer a shared closeness with one another.
