Everyone knows that finding a place to live can be a real ordeal. An expensive one, too. So at the very least, having a partner by your side should make the whole process a little easier.

That’s what one woman thought, anyway. With her lease coming to an end, she and her boyfriend had been looking for apartments together as a couple. The only problem was that he was unemployed, so she was the one covering all the application costs.

So you can imagine how blindsided she felt when he suddenly revealed that he had found an apartment—but planned to live there on his own, leaving her with nowhere to go. Read the full story below.

The boyfriend clearly lied about what he intended to do

The situation this woman found herself in is genuinely awful. A roof over your head is not a luxury, it’s the bare minimum for feeling safe and stable. Losing that, or even the prospect of losing it, is an incredibly stressful place to be in.

And her boyfriend knew that. He knew her lease was ending soon, and he let her believe they were in this together. She was the one paying for every application while he was out of work, putting her trust and her money into a future they were supposedly building as a couple. Then, without any real warning, he revealed he had already signed a lease on his own, and she was not on it.

He did offer to let her stay with him temporarily while she searched for her own place, so she is not completely without options. But the way he broke the news, and the reasoning he gave for it, says a lot about where his head was at throughout this whole process. 

He told her they had become too codependent and that her emotional reactions were too much to handle. That is not a mature or honest explanation for making a decision this big behind someone’s back.
