The audiovisual compilation ‘Solace’ is founded by the global community of musicians and visual artists based in NYC, the current epicenter of Covid-19.

This compilation features unreleased audiovisual art works, live recordings, and composition of 11 projects contributed by 14 artists who are based and from all over the world coming together to support the organization fighting against Covid-19, through our creative expression and fundraising.

100% of the proceeds will be donated to The International Rescue Committee (IRC). The IRC is providing lifesaving programs to the most vulnerable communities especially hit hard by the pandemic.

This project is entitled ‘Solace ‘ meaning comfort or consolation in a time of deep distress. ‘Solace’ is the reflection of what music and visual art has meant to people while being in isolation and social distancing during the pandemic. ‘Solace’ symbolizes the hope for a renewed creativity and inventiveness in all of us during this time of crisis.

Curated by Testu Collective + ÉMU, this compilation was born out of the need to express the immensity of the crisis and the profound loss that we all feel, but find hard to articulate into words. Music and art have been our solace. We hope that you might escape for just a bit through our sonic and visual pieces.

Over the last few weeks, I’ve been trying make sense of the strange mix of emotions I’ve felt throughout the pandemic. Frustration, a sense of helplessness and nihilism, obsessiveness, and every so often, a quiet sense of calm. I wanted to capture these moments in sound and image.

As a New Yorker I’m filled with pride yet I am fearful for the future of the city and surrounding areas. I grew up just outside the city on Long Island where unfortunately just lost an elderly family member to the virus. My performance ‘Solar’ is dedicated in memory of my Great Aunt Mary Rizzuto.

Comment :
The nocturnal road in front of my eyes, even if it were daytime, would still be deserted and silent. I listen to the “street”, what does this silence tell me? What is underneath it?

Our space has closed in upon us in our homes and the greenery and wildlife seem to have fewer boundaries: we should listen to their voice. I would like to learn this music, this new language (which is silence).

An inverted root, with an opposing movement pushes something beyond the human. Listen to this voice. Dream (at last) inside this voice. To see that the emptiness of man inside these voices is music. It opens another “way”.

Comment :
I am currently an MFA student in my final semester of study. Over the past two years, I’ve been working toward a thesis exhibition this spring, which has now been cancelled. I live alone in the rural town where my school is. Now that all the undergraduate students have been sent home, it is very quiet and empty. I have been taking long walks in the woods. I am looking forward to moving back to the city and seeing my friends again.

Stay home and have fun the audiovisuals! I made the track in 2011. And now I connected it with visuals made last year. 2020 is a very weird year. But other hands, it gave me the time to look back on my past.

Track 09 : Gazes Grises by Gabor

Gabor creates ambient music with beautiful minimal sound elements for the comfort of ears and mood.
He is a co-frounder of French based record label Mesma Records, also a talented graphic designer.

Comment :
This is a song that I composed while in confinement in New York City—a place I’d never thought I’d experience so quiet. For once, it’s been easy to sit down and complete an entire piece from home, while elsewhere pain and turmoil persist.
I’m humbled to be part of such a project, put together by people who I admire—who have lately called to mind the idea of ‘Scenius’, coined by Brian Eno. How ironic, as we find ourselves now apart. All my thoughts go out to those suffering from the COVID-19 pandemic and to those working tirelessly, regardless of the conditions set for them or against them.

… the intangible became strangely a threat, the invisible forced us to remain isolated and strips us naked …
For the first time we forced ourselves to see each other, to not be able to look away, in the least usual way.

The world has changed as we know it. The pandemic has allowed us to create and invent in ways we never imagined. This audiovisual piece is born from the tiny moments of escape that we’ve had to create music and visual art.
