Artist Tears & Cuts Up Hundreds Of Magazines Using The Colours She Finds Instead Of Paint

Kirstie Adamson is a magazine and junkmail collage artist. She doesn’t use any paint in her creations, instead choosing to rip and cut the colours she needs from magazines.

First introduced to collage in 1994 while at art collage she used newspapers to create a still life and has repeatedly returned to this method when creating her artwork. Kirstie decided to work exclusively in magazine and junkmail in 2007 after creating two collages for a local upcycling exhibition she helped to curate.

Kirstie’s work is incredibly detailed, tiny pieces of ripped and cut magazine are used to create a realistic representation of her subject.

Commission work forms a large percentage of her portfolio as she offers a depiction service, creating collages of clients loved ones, pets and favourite places. She works in conjunction with a local artisan and skills group who then frame the work using reclaimed wood.

Kirstie is currently working on her solo exhibition ‘Let’s Pretend’ being held at Banks Mill Studios in Derby, September 2017. The work will centre around fairytales, roleplay, nursery rhymes, film & fantasy. Exploring the concept that climate change is not a fairytale and the need to protect the earth for future generations.

Recently Kirstie has begun to experiment with 3D pieces, producing ‘Storyteller Dolls’ by collaging lampshade frames and plastic bottles. Her butterflies on logs have also proven very popular.
