Photography Tips To Help You Look Your Best

From selfies, to being photographed at a friend’s wedding or even your own wedding, we’ve all been in front of a camera at some point or another. And, if you’ve recently looked at a photo of yourself and thought you were not photogenic, then this is the blog post for you.

If you know that you’re going to be in front of the camera at any point in the future, follow some of our simple tips on how to be photogenic in photos.

1. Get to Know Your FaceLighting Photo Tips

This applies to professional photo shoots as well as every day photo taking. Make sure you take the time to get to know your face, how to smile naturally and which side or angle of your face you like better.

2. Take Care When Applying Make-Up

An evening out calls for a very different style of make-up to an executive head shot or a family portrait photo shoot. Wear minimal makeup – it’s timeless. It’s easy to get carried away with make-up and it’s really easy to overdo it. For the best results, keep it minimal as we are crafting a stage for you with light, which will look much better if we aren’t combating the fake tones that make-up sometimes applies. You should also only stick to accentuating one part of your face so choose either your eyes or lips but not both.

It’s also not a good time to try something new. Stick to colours and tones of make-up that you know work for you.

3. Facing the Camera

Your photographer will help you when it comes to posing for photos but in general we suggest that you shouldn’t be facing the camera head on. Positioning your body at an angle will highlight your features and always makes you look better in photos.

If you tend to blink in photos, close your eyes just before the photo is taken and open them slowly before the camera clicks. Then, ta da … no more half-closed eyes.

4. Controlling Your Chin

Photos where your neck is elongated and your chin is pushed slightly forward will lift your face and give it a more angular look. You might want to practice this before your photo shoot in order to get used to holding your chin in that position.

5. Carefully Choose your Outfit

Put some thought into what you’ll wear during your photo shoot. Pair bold designs (not too busy though) with solid colours to avoid too much distraction. You should also pay attention to how your outfit fits on you. You want to ensure that you have your sizing correct so your outfit fits the shape of your body. Make sure it complements your style and that you feel fabulous and comfortable.

Consider layering your outfit. It’s the easiest way to get a number of looks from your photo shoot without having to get changed multiple times. See our blog post : How To Layer To Rock Your Photo Shoot

6. Use lighting to your advantage

Your professional photographer will be an expert in how to use lighting effectively. When a photograph has beautiful lighting, it gives the image a certain mood and highlights the important aspects of a photo. Light is an incredible tool, using soft artificial light in a controlled environment such as a studio creates atmosphere and can make all the difference.

Some general tips are: you should avoid standing directly under a light as this will create weird shadows on your face. This is something your photographer will help you out with because they are experts so be sure to take their advice. If shooting outdoors, the best light will be 15-20 minutes before and after sunset. Unless it’s an overcast day, your photographer will always try to get you in full shade so that the lighting isn’t dappled or causes those weird shadows.

7. Have Confidence

When people are ready to embrace the professional photography experience for all that it is, their confidence radiates. And this confidence is then carried through into their photo shoot, resulting in amazing beautiful images to cherish.

As much as the above tips will help you during your professional photo shoot, always remember to have fun and relax as this will shine through in your photos.
