Something I am passionate about is the ethics of consumerism in relation to how animals are used in the beauty, fashion and home industries. This inspired my latest creative photographic conceptual art work. My work consists of self portraits posed with animals in scenes related to their species’ hidden controversial industry. By creating an impression with the materials and subjects juxtaposed to give a touch of the surreal, I hope to give the viewer the chance to think about the different elements of the photograph.
Within this series of images, symbolism and semiotics are used to tell a story. The book signifying knowledge and the color red representing blood are consistent symbols throughout the series. Although the environmental settings often have a quality of calmness and the hint of a fairytale, the underlying message is very strong and hard hitting but up to the viewers awareness to interpret.
This quote by W. Eugene Smith inspired me to do this series of images: “Photography is a small voice, at best, but sometimes one photograph, or a group of them, can lure our sense of awareness.”

The whole series of images are spectacular but the Leather one is particularly dramatic. Gave me the shivers! Certainly makes one think .
Amazing. The leather picture is like a punch in the stomach. It really brings in home.
